words like alarming and disappointing to describe this new year's day drama. we caught up with the congressman of maryland and congressman jerry connelly a shortime ago. both are very frustrated that the house appears to have made little progress. little movement tonight in what passed the senate in the wear hours of this morning overwhelmingly. let's listen to hear what they had to say. >> and you had them from the most liberal members to the most conservative members of the united states senate. joined forces for the good of the country. and here in the house you will have the republican speaker refusing to allow us to have an up or down vote on the compromise. is it everything you want? no. some of us would consider it as a holds your -- hold your noes vote. if this is the best that you can do for the last day of congress, let's get it done.

it will be much more helpful than harmful to get this done. >> reporter: support for this bill does not fall strictly on partisan lines by the way. our colleague is here as we just spoke to another house democrat who does not support this bill. gary? >> james moran of virginia home to 65,000 employees in that district says they will offer about $8 billion in the defense cuts, $6 billion in the non- defense cuts if you go through it all. and he said that he is upset that the bill passed by democrats and the republicans in the senate. and essentially gives away the democrats and their bargaining power by taking revenue and insisting three times for the next three months that we're going to face only discussions about spending cuts. and what hit his district particularly. the meeting today to decide what they need to do and it could be when the republicans are done to come to the house floor with a rule to allow a vote on what they would like to

master chief officer. >> after 20 years in the navy and, you know, being able to do this openly without don't ask don't tell and being able to be legally married, it's wonderful. >> reporter: scott broom, 9news now. >> the legalization of same-sex marriage in maryland is arguably the highest profile new law taking effect in the d.c. area today, but there are others. the banned on chicken feed also takes effect today. it is a law that allows parents to freeze their credit. the idea to make it easier to fight identity theft. in virginia local governments can now only seize property for the public use by claiming imminent domains. and insurance agents have to inform people if their policy excludes coverage for earthquake damage. and don't forget that the new year means new rates on the dulles toll road. they went up by a quarter today at the main toll plaza bringing the rate to $1.75 for a

standard two-wheel vehicle. tolls are also up a quarter to the on and off ramps bringing them $1 a piece. tomorrow means a return for the normal daily routine to mean a lot more cars on the road. be sure to join all of us for the traffic and weather you need before you head out the door starting at 4:25 a.m. >> i know my kids are not ready for this reality check. but erica is in the weather center with an early look at our forecast for tomorrow. well you're going to have to bundle up those kids as they are waiting for the bus because we're going to see breezy conditions moving back in along with a return of the sunshine. our temperatures today, they're not too bad though. we have had highs in the 40s throughout the areas. with a lot of 43s and 44s out there. we got up to 45 officially at reagan national in d.c. and our low temperature is 38. well above normal for the low as we didn't have a big range between the high and low temperatures and because of that cloud cover and because resetting all the precipitation numbers for this new year and

we are back to zero as you can see the showers to the south. i will tell you about the next chance of precipitation that will be coming up in the full forecast in just a bit. >> all right, thank you very much. a vigil is planned in honor of the prince william police officer killed in the fiery crash on the line of duty. >> i'm peggy fox in bristow where they cornered off a part of this parking lot for a vigil for officer chris yung who died at this intersection yesterday. police officers often witnessed scenes of death and grief, but this one is their own. a growing memorial for the beloved fellow officer chris yung. he died here yesterday while responding to a call for an accident and got into a fiery terrible crash. he and his motorcycle collided with the minivan that was turning left into the shopping center. today a group of officers, including the acting police chief, he offered their

condolences to young's widow who was also a prince william county officer until recently. >> and he meant a lot to us. an outstanding police officer, a true public servant. >> reporter: chris young was the father of three children even people he ticketed found him friendly. >> a great smile and when you met chris, you knew you met a friend. >> reporter: in bristow, peggy fox, 9news. this coming thursday, students from newtown, connecticut will find their old backpacks and old desks at a new school. we're talking about the children that survived at sandy hook elementary school. three weeks after the nightmare, the kids will file into the new school in the neighboring town of monroe. and chicago has already reported their first homicide and ten other shootings since the clock struck midnight. a 20-year-old man died after being shot in the throat on the

and they are starting to put their pick up plans in effect already. in the district, they will put their discarded christmas tree on the curb where you would normally put on the track. and it will be picked up through the end of arlington county and they offer the curb side pick up and recycling between january 7 and the 18. trees left on the curb after that will be thrown away for the rest of the regular garbage pick up. and they will need to pick up trees at the curb for the first two weeks of january. in all areas, make sure that you remove all your ornaments and the other decorations before throwing your tree away. you can learn more about the

tree recycling and drop off centers centers in loudon and frederick counties. >> a saving grace for the new year's eve church goers in maryland. >> reporter: fire investigators are trying to determine what caused this fire and it may be found what happened here for the new year's eve service. right at midnight the lights went out. >> yeah, they went out just at midnight. and why, we don't know. >> reporter: and then just seven hours later, pastor robert got a call saying his church of 22 years was on fire. >> i couldn't believe it. it was unbelievable. the two-alarm fire that took the prince's county firefighters 30 minutes to put out. no one hurt, but the church was charred. >> this is the bible. it's a bible. it is suppose to be left here. >> reporter: a cross has been burned into the brick wall.

the monument, seattle has the needle. they make planes, we make legislation very slowly. washington has tourists, seattle has techies. wait for it, seattle has a nice hot cup of starbucks coffee while we here have a nice hot bowl of chili. >> which is the better city? >> no question all washington. always washington. >> let's also not forget the redskins have won three super bowls while seattle's sports championship game in 1979 when the super sonics defeated the washington bullets. snow in canada and winter doesn't generally surprise many people, but the amount that fell in montreal over the last week certainly did. five days after 20 inches of snow fell, the city says only 48% of the streets and sidewalks are cleared. by law crews can only work 70 hours a week, so it's hindering clean up efforts.

cities are hoping to finish the bulk of the streets by this coming sunday. there will be plenty of fireworks to see in the sky this week because of the first meteor shower of the year to keep this week in the northern hemisphere. nasa says people watching the shower could see as many as 40 shooting stars an hour. if that happens then it could be quite the show. >> yes, absolutely, but we might have a few clouds to deal with. it looks like we will start seeing clearing overnight tonight, which will be terrific news, but we are also going to see the breezes coming up as a consequence of the clearing skies as well. i will tell you why in just a second. but take a look outside. we are looking live at the reagan national airport right now. lots of clouds are still in place, but fairly mild. it's 45 degrees, which is also our high temperature. the clouds are helping to keep the temperature from dipping during the overnight hours so far. winds out of the northwest at 8 miles per hour. those winds will continue to bring in a cooler and drier air mass. that's why we will see some clearing tonight in your

weather headlines, but it will be breezy on wednesday and that cooler arctic air is trying to sneak on down here. that will leave it chilly during the entire rest of the shortened workweek. a few flakes are possible this weekend, but no accumulating snow in the weekend just yet. right now it is 39 degrees in manassas. a big contract to the 45 in d.c. 43 in annapolis. 49 in easton. and not too bad here either where it is also 39 degrees. you can see the showers and even pockets of heavier rain showing up on satellite and radar. it is all continuing to move off to the east as you head into wednesday. so you will still have the rain in southern virginia down towards norfolk and the neck of virginia, but that is all going to head out to the east as we head into wednesday and here in the d.c. metro, we're just going to see bright sunshine to start out the day. however the sunshine a little deceiving because it will be a little bit on the cool and breezy side. winds are out of the north with an area of high pressure situated to the west, which will continue to keep things breezy as we head into the

afternoon on wednesday. but overnight tonight just the clouds moving out. it will be chilly. but those winds are not too bad. 26 to 32 for your overnight lows. winds are out of the north at 5 to 10 miles per hour. and it will be a bit breezy under mostly sunny skies. make sure the kids have their winter coats. temperatures in the 30s, but windchills in the 20s with the winds out of the north increasing just a little bit. in the afternoon it will be breezy and cooler with the sunny skies and the high between 35 to 40 degrees. winds are out of the north, which will give us a windchill in the upper 20s to the lower 30s throughout the day. but the 9 weather alerts remain green for the next few days. breezy on wednesday and a high of 38 on wednesday. it doesn't look as good on thursday. thursday will be a real nice day. mostly sunny with the high of 40. then on friday we'll bring back the chance for just a few flakes, flurries, no accumulating snow in that forecast. a high of 38 degrees. in the seven-day outlook, another chance of flurries on sunday. good timing right for the

redskins game? make the seattle seahawks feel right at home. no they won't feel at home with some flurries and the high of 38 degrees. breezy conditions here as well, but then heading back to work and school next week, it will be milder with the highs in the mid-40s. lots of sunshine. probably the best weather that you will have all month. >> and they will feel at home with 70,000 fans screaming. >> that's right. you know they will be bumped up for that. the whole town really. >> and you know is, we have them mainly here over the weekend as it will be so fun to listen to them talk about their dallas memories as they were just so excited to see their team doing so well. they will be back this weekend as well to talk more redskins. normally today we would be covering the locker clean out, but not this year as the skins are still alive. and so while they enjoy a much deserved day off today, we'll take a look at what game you can look forward to next year. today is also jammed full of college football games as we go bowling coming up next in sports.

games we have had so far. we start down in sunny tampa, florida with the old head coach. south carolina taking on michigan in the outback bowl. the monster hit here. it goes flying here as they recover that fumble. a big hit there. michigan is down by five as they connected them 17 yards for the touchdown. the conversion will bring up one. with just under 20 seconds left, south carolina responds. dillon thompson, prayer of the past caught here by bruce. the game cocks reveal 33-28 the first time the old ball coach has ever beaten michigan. just up the road in orlando, georgia, nebraska, in the capital one bowl. in the first, picked off by will thompson as he takes it 29 yards to the house. on the next georgia play, murray gets revenge, they launch 75 yards for the strike. all to tevarius king.

a false move. starts to pile on as he takes the swing pass for 88 yards and the bulldogs win 35-31 getting 12 wins for just the third time in school history. sane in florida. on the east coast in jacksonville, taking on northwestern in the gator bowl. bulldogs' pass is intercepted as he takes it 29 yards to the house. wildcats strike first and often. northwestern beat mississippi state 34-20. they snapped college football's longest losing streak. it was 1939 in the rose bowl. time to announce the high school sports game of the week poll. the first of the new year with several good games to choose from this week. a good game in silver springs as they visit spring brook on the girl's side of fairfax. visit them when the u.s.a. today high school sports will announce the winner on thursday tonight. the washington redskins still have some football left

in this season, but it doesn't mean you can't take a look ahead to next year. the skins 2013 list of opponents was released today. here is the home and away list. aside from their normal divisional opponent, they will face the nfc north and west this season. it will be a tough game at home for the san francisco 49ers. on the road look at that as mike shanahan will return to his former stomping grounds and face the denver broncos. the coaching carousels will continue today, but the first to land a new home could be andy reed. they said that he could be the next cardinal's head coach by the end of the week. interestingly enough the eagles host the cardinals next season. and that will be one heck of a game and, of course, lots of folks are talking about kyle shanahan. the redskins offensive coordinator being on the short list. no statement from the redskins yet, but that will be my money on him staying here.
