inauguration and up to 20% of the population can be affected by the flu in the course of a widespread season like this one. >> we're seeing incredible number of patients here. >> reporter: and the doctor here at the medstar washington hospital department has his fingers crossed that they all don't end up here. >> we're looking about 1 million, 600,000 to 1 million guests. we'll see more patients during the flu season. >> reporter: hopefully not so many that local hospitals will be forced to do what the lehigh valley hospital in pennsylvania has already done, putting up tents in their parking lot. but they are asking d.c. residence with health issues to think ahead before the inauguration weekend. >> for patients in the district around inauguration, travel is difficult. make preparations to get medications to have those medications so that you're not running out during those days when traffic and patterns have changed and you can't get to the hospital or to your doctor,

etc. >> reporter: now the flu has reached widespread proportions already. there are no public health advisories about staying away from the big crowds or events. and like the inauguration. and at the medstar washington hospital center, scott broom, 9news now. >> and one of the best ways to reduce your risk of getting hit by the bug, it's to get that vaccine. now although there are some shortages, the maryland and virginia health department says there is still an adequate supply out. there 95% of this year's shots have been dulled out. so you may want to get a move on and you may also want to call ahead before you leave the house. a student suspected of shooting a classmate inside a high school is in police custody tonight. this happen -- it happened this morning about two hours north of l.a. dozens of heavily armed police officers stormed the school after the shooting and quickly took the alleged gunman into custody. the teen is now in critical condition. a student trying to intervene

was hit by a pellet, but refused treatment. vice president joe biden will propose new proposals to the government by tuesday. he spent his day looking for some middle ground with gun owners and the nhr. danielle nottingham reports from the white house. >> reporter: this woman came to the virginia gun shop to buy her first firearm. >> there's got to be common ground here. but it has been difficult. the national rifle association said that their closed door meeting with biden had more to do with taking away gun rights

than protecting children. the white house is looking to ban assault weapons in high capacity magazines. that's a hard sell to gun owners, but that there will be another proposal that seems to be gaining some traction. >> and there is a surprising view so far. >> reporter: currently about 40% of all u.s. gun sales do not require a background check. they support the background checks for all gun purchases. but that banning weapons will not stop violence. >> reporter: it is not a prescription for the equal team. you can't legislate that. >> reporter: the vice president's task force is looking to help bridge the divide. several including wal-mart took part in meeting on thursday. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. the representatives from the entertainment industry, they also came to washington for a sit down with the vice president today and on friday, he will meet with the video

game producers. well tonight, we are getting a better look at the new mortgage rules set up by the consumer financial protection bureau. it is all in response to the 2008 housing collapse when just about anybody with a lse could get a mortgage for hundreds of thousands of dollars. first up, no more interest-only loans. plus, lenders, they will need to verify the borrower's financial record. they will not be allowed to burden borrowers with the loan payments. more than 43% of their annual income and the large balloon payments, they would also be eliminated in most cases. the maryland senator says that it will be high time that we see this kind of reform. >> we've seen neighborhoods that have been very much negatively impacted because of the mortgage foreclosures. is and the individuals in our community, they were steered into the sub prime products. and that they shouldn't have been. >> now, the new rules, they are designed to protect both

lenders and borrowers, going into effect next year. a young man wanted in connection with the violent home invasion, they were shot to death by the police. it happened earlier this morning on west win drive in maryland. the frederick county sheriff deputy bursted into the home after knocking on the door. when they got in there, they said that they spotted the 19- year-old pointing a shotgun at them and they wouldn't put it down, opening fire and killed them. a d.c. police officer is in hot water tonight, accused of sexually abusing a child. >> i'm surae chinn outside the d.c. courthouse where a man who was suppose to be trusted as the church you'll choir director and the 22-year veteran of the metropolitan police department, they were arraigned today, charged with sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl at his church. the 44-year-old, the choir director at his family's church, which was founded by his father and now lead by his brother, allegedly used his position of authority to take advantage of one of the girls. >> and do you have anything to say about the church?

>> reporter: a family member who came out of the courthouse, they had nothing to say, but the court documents, they say that he sexually abused the sixth grader who was 11 years old at the time for a period of two years between 2004 to 2006. police, they say that most of the incidents, they happen during the choir rehearsals and the abuse in the pastor's office in southeast. now, according to the court papers, the abuse happened during the rehearsal breaks, when palmer would send the other children to a store leaving them alone. >> you're suppose to trust the clergy and the ministry and the police officer as well. >> reporter: in west, surae chinn, 9news. the new law banning the american adoptions in russia will not go into effect for another year according to the washington. citing a spokesperson for the president there. no words for the dozen of cases currently nearing completion. this weekend, 15,000 people in russia are expected to take to the streets to protest against

music? it's called the chuck brown music pavilion. today mayor vince gray signed off for the memorial. now, the same for the interior of the howard theater designed as tribute to the god father of go-go. well the search for a new fbi headquarter site has started a bit of a fight between maryland and virginia and today, virginia threw a punch at. the fbi plans to leave their old headquarter building downtown. counties in virginia and maryland both would like to be the new spot. one of them is the federal gsa warehouse near springfield mall, but the by-product of the group of northern virginias top elected leaders gave a united message today to convince the fbi that the old dominion is the place that they want to be. >> if a decision is made on the merits, the merits being what's best for the country, what's best for the fbi, what's best for the fbi employees. i think that it will be in

the makers of ambient and other sleeping pills are going to have to lower the dosage and the drugs. the food and drug administration said that new research suggests that the drugs might cause morning drowsiness. as they explain, that increases their risk of car accidents. >> reporter: patients that take ambient or other similar sleeping pills will soon beingesting lower doses. they are ordering the drug companies to cut the dosage in half for women. the move is based on the new research that shows the higher dose, they could cause morning drowsiness, which can lead to car accidents. >> and it is at 7:00 or 8:00 in the morning, there are still left over chemicals that will be making you drowsy. >> reporter: the high-profile case involves robert kennedy's daughter, kerry kennedy who hit a tractor trailer at a new york highway last summer. toxicology tests showed she had a chemical found in ambient in her -- ambien in her system. >> reporter: that's why the new

rule applies to them. they are also recommending lowering the doses for men, but it won't be mandatory. >> reporter: millions of americans, they take ambien and other drugs containing that drug to treat their insome knee yeah -- insomnia. >> because of the different brain chemicals that control the sleepiness of the brain. >> they released a statement saying that the individuals taking the drug should always talk to their doctor about the most appropriate dose. and that these medicine, they should not be used if individuals are unable to get the recommended 7 to 8 hours to sleep. and the fda says that patients, they should continue taking their currently prescribed dose until they could talk to their doctor. teresa garcia, cbs news, denver, colorado. and now they point out that the extended release forms of these drugs, they have the highest risk for impairment the next morning as you can imagine. all right, no doubt, hollywood is all a buzz tonight about the oscar nominations

announced today. "lincoln", "les miserables", "life of ph i" beast, "silver linings playbook", "zero dark thirty", "amor" "django unchained" and "argo". the big award ceremony is on february 24. and we have heard so much about this "zero dark thirty" that it is hard to believe it's not out there yet, but the film actually comes out tomorrow. a lot of important people are waiting to see how it will impact the public's opinion of the war on terror. you see critics say that the film implies that torture or as they call it enhanced interrogation techniques were the key to findi osama bin laden. >> it is fortunate that in something that has been advertised, inspired by a true story that this critical part of the story is not right and the people may be mislead as to what role torture should play in finding terrorists. >> the senate intelligence committee is investigating the film's contact within the cia

it. that's fairly high. okay, satellite picture radar combined. here comes the storm. it's going to track essentially up the mississippi river. and that's going to spell rain, not snow, but rain for detroit and chicago and minneapolis and big thunderstorms in the deep south. we could even hear a rumble of thunder here tomorrow about this time, especially north of town. now the clouds, they are moving in. these green areas, they are not hitting the ground yet. these are just a sprinkle, but they are evaporating before they reach the ground. we're going to stay dry for tonight. for the most part be dry for the morning commute. 47 at rockville. 47 in bethesda. 48 in fairfax. 49 in berk. so temperatures mainly in the 40s, but this is still a treat really. 48 at college park. 44 in bowie and 45 at andrews. so a few showers are on the way, but dry tonight. mainly dry for your morning commute. tomorrow morning the wet roads will be a factor, especially north of town. then over the weekend, it will be like april that we might hit temperatures in the mid-60s over the weekend and that will

be the average high for april 10. not january 10, but april 10. all right the future cast. 8:00 in the morning, some clouds, but no showers just yet. we'll put this into motion. now by 1:00 or 2:00, a couple sprinkles will be possible, but the bulk of the activity in the early afternoon anyway, it will be hagerstown, cumberland out in the mountains. it does push through the metro area though between about 5:00 and 7:00 tomorrow, just in time for the rush hours. and then the latest run will be a little further south than what it was. you folks in southern maryland, less of a chance, but even in fairfax and prince george's county, the district, they could hear the rumble of thunder before all is said and done tomorrow evening. so tonight, increasing clouds, chilly. a warm blanket night. low temperatures in the 30s. winds are easterly at 10. the next three days, we'll keep tomorrow green for now. 50 afternoon showers. warmer on saturday, 64. crazy warm on sunday. maybe a shower, but 69 degrees. next seven days? showers are possible on monday. still around 60.

but david says that he doesn't care. he feels like barry bond, sammy sosa and roger clemmons should be in the hall of fame. it generally believed if they did use steroids that it started late in their careers. by that time they already had the hall of fame numbers. i think at that point it was not so much to get ahead, but to keep up. so many younger players were showing increases in their batting runs. isn't that always the story? they feel like they have to do it just to keep up? that doesn't make it right and it surely doesn't mean that anybody will put you in the hall of fame. and of course it would not be the mail bag this week without a comment or two on rg3 and his knee. lori from kings county virginia says we all need to take a chill pill. why is everyone complaining that he should have been taken out of the game? he only injured himself further.

he was injured weeks ago against the ravens and kept on playing. now, never heard anyone say that he shouldn't be playing when he won against the cowboys, browns, or eagles. this could have happened in any of those games. well lori, the big difference in those games is that while griffin was indeed hurt, he was also effective. now if that was the case on sunday after reinjuring that knee in the first quarter, then we would have much less to complain about. in any case though, ron says that the bad news for rg3 and the skins fans, it is just the beginning. griffin, he will never be the same again. and he will not scamper like he has and he will be psychologically hampered to do the same regardless of the fact that he may physically recover. stay warm. speaking of the psychological, how do you think that the team of veterans really feel about griffin being treated like the second coming of christ? well captain sunshine, i think those veterans will be glad to win games and make the playoffs. i also think that there will be no way to know what's going to happen to rg3 as he recovers. and i also think that while he
