tv   9 News Now at 6am  CBS  January 11, 2013 6:00am-7:00am EST

6:00 am
9news now at 6:00 a.m. you never know who's going to drop by and turn the show upside down. >> today is howard bernstein -- i'm mike hydeck, thank you for joining us. here's monika samtani. she will also do traffic because she does traffic. >> but nobody does weather better than howard. >> we're turning the weather world upside down because it's the middle of january and i've got a spring-like forecast as we head in through your weekend. so temperatures in the 60s and some will hit 70 on sunday. amazing. yeah. here's this morning though. look at our satellite and radar. i think i went one too far. back up to the day planner. all right we'll start there and temperatures in the 30s now and you'll need a moderately heavy coat. by noon, 48. but by noon, the shower or two and then a better chance for showers this afternoon with highs in the upper 40s to the 50-degree mark. clouds, boy thigh took a long time coming in yesterday. this morning, got some returns towardcharlottesville. i don't believe that's really reaching the ground but lunchburg a but showers down to
6:01 am
the -- few showers down to the north carolina border. the afternoon will be cloudy and damp and temperatures this morning though are cold. 32 frederick and it's 37 in winchester. mid 30s across the northern folk right on the bay. jan says a nice morning there with easton at 34 and 38 at the naval academy. only 50 and again keep the rain gear with you because we're going to see showers for the afternoon. for the commuting it's dry but there's other problems to deal with. here's monika samtani to elaborate. always something going on in washington isn't there? there was an issue with a car fire on the southbound side of i-95. south of dale city but that's been cleared up. northbound you are not affected by that and look at all the green behind me. i love to show you this on friday morning. from triangle up to springfield. no stress, no issues to report at least not yet. i'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. if you're planning to head outside let's take a live look. on the northbound side of i-95, and 395, this is pretty much what you have to deal with.
6:02 am
some volume now forming but no big deals. let's go back to the maps this time over to 270 southbound side coming in from frederick down to 109. that's where the pace slows down and down toward 121 now that slow stretch and then you're okay down to rockville. one more last live look here's 109 again down to 121 before the pace improves. i'll be back with more traffic at 6:11. back to you. thank you monika. the flu is spreading fiercely across the country with about 45 states now reporting widespread activity. >> it makes you feel icky just hearing it doesn't it? yesterday officials blamed the flu for deaths of 20 children so far nation wait. delia goncalves is live in the satellite center to talk about the natureof how widespread this actually is. quite a few states most states in fact. >> reporter: good morning most states and the numbers still fluctuating at this time. the centers for disease control will actually have a news conference later this morning to release the latest numbers
6:03 am
about this widespread flu case that we are experiencing in the country. they say it's bad, but we are not having an epidemic. so there's no need for mass panic here. this strain of the flu has -- peaked months sooner than it does most years, here's some perspective though. right now doctors say the percentage of flu cases at clinics nationwide just above 5%. in the very bad season of 2003/2004, you may remember during the swine flu outbreak? cases were higher up to 7%. the good news, the current flu vaccine covers this particularly potent strain of the flu. >> h 3 n 2 influenza a. is traditionally and historically more serious than other types of influenza like h1n1. we had an h1n1 year last year that was very, very mild.
6:04 am
in 2009, it was widespread but it wasn't that serious. >> reporter: there's still time to get the flu shot and it will still be effective. but you should call ahead to make sure that your pharmacy or your doctor's office does still have those flu shots in stock. coming up at 6:30 what you need to know about the flu and the upcoming inauguration here in town. plus a little experiment to see just how quickly these germs spread and mike and andrea, you are not off the hook when it comes to this experiment. i'll see you soon. >> where's the hand sanitizer? >> we have it. we're ready for you. >> reporter: you can't cheat the results. >> all right. delia goncalves we'll be ready for you. >> okay. the fix was in. that's the feeling of nra officials after meeting with vice president joe biden at the white house to talk about gun control yesterday. the nra representative at the meeting says the white house seems intent on trying to pass new gun control laws. so in response, the group issued a statement saying quote
6:05 am
-- it will not allow law- abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. and on the same day that gun control was being addressed in our nation's capital, police in california are investigating a case where a teen shot two kids at the high school because he says he'd been bullied. he planned the attack for a full year. he shot and critically injured one student and then fired on others before tetchiest convinced him to put the -- teachers and other students convinced him put the shotgun down. we'll have more to come on the gun control efforts coming up in our next half hour. a colorado judge says there's enough evidence for james holmes to go to trial for the july shooting spree at the aurora movie theater. holmes is scheduled to be arraigned today on 160 felony counts. 12 people died and dozens were injured in that attack. >> i could see it on his face as he was watching the videos
6:06 am
of himself. he got very animated. you know. there's no way that guy is crazy. that guy is evil. >> however holmes' defense attorney filed papers saying he's not ready to enter a plea and is likely to ask for a delayed arraignment. 6:06. jessica doyle is here with another your money report. >> and new rules for the mortgage business. people have been calling for these for a while and it's going to be interesting. >> these are big changes coming for the mortgage business. and they very well could impact our local housing market in a very large way. federal officials have handed down these new rules on mortgage lending practices and they want to reduce risky loans and protect consumers from mortgage abuse after the housing bubble burst leaving of course to that foreclosure crisis across the nation. lendors will ramp up their evaluations of a borrower's income and assets as well as the ability to repay the loan. this also changes the types of loans that can be offered. one possible concern for us the new standards make it a bit
6:07 am
tougher to get the larger size mortgages the kind you so often in the housing market since the real estate prices are so high here. borrowers can't get the big loans they need and that could slow down housing sales yet again. so here's a look at some of the new rules going into effect next year. lendor will no longer be allowed to offer interest only lones and lendors must also verify a borrower's financial records and banks generally won't be allowed to hand out loans with payments that are more than 43% of annual income. that will affect the large mortgages. and large balloon payments at the end of the loan would also be eliminated in most cases. the pendulum we've been experiencing in the years leading up to the housing budge bursting a ham sandwich could have gotten a jumbo mortgage and that was bad. when the rules were tightened so much in the last couple of years some middle class families were finding it almost impocket to get a -- impossible to get a mortgage. >> yeah because if there's a lot of people that even i know that have great credit and did
6:08 am
what they needed to do. and don't have the down payment. >> refies have been very difficult for a lot of folks to get. >> happy medium is what we're hoping for. >> the word compromise comes to mind. which is difficult. >> imagine that. >> in this town. all right take a look at this. before and after. yes. it is the same woman. >> the same woman. stick to your new year's resolution and this could be you too. how much she lost and the advice she's willing to give. we have her here in studio. you'll see her at 6:12. >> wow.
6:09 am

6:11 am
howard here with your weather first. increasing clouds a dry morning commute. rain will move in for the afternoon and generally be on the light side but it could slow you down for the ride home. high temperatures up around the 50-degree mark. back in just a few moments with the full weekend forecast. and a live look here from our sky 9 on the beltway inner loop side in springfield. those are your headlights there heading for the mixing bowl. no issues to report here. northbound 95 is slow though route 644 up to 495. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 6:18. back to you guys. all right, thanks monika. this is a great story you don't want to miss this. weight loss it takes time and dedication. it is difficult to lose the pounds. as we were just talking you see a million people in the gym for the first two weeks of the year and then all of a sudden they disappear. it's a big feat to keep the
6:12 am
pounds off and keep with the new year's resolution. the next guest sharon jacobs did just that. this was a while ago, four years ago is that right sharon but she kept up with it. also here's the personal trainer who's going to share her story. first of all, let's talk about difference we saw the before and after picture there. how much did you weigh then and how much do you weigh now? >> in that first photo i weighed 209 pounds and competition weight i was 119 today and today i'm 135. >> so tell people how tall you are. >> i'm 5'7." >> so that's a big big goal. why did you do it? you said you were experiencing health issues at the beginning. >> it was for health reasons. i couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without having to stop halfway or having health issues. issues starting to arise and i had to do something. you know i wasn't always overweight either. so it just kept telling myself why? so i just started doing it. and as i started losing the weight, things were happening with my body that i noticed.
6:13 am
i mean my feet when i woke up in the morning to touch the ground would hurt. that was the first thing. i want to see what's going to happen next. i have to keep going. the heavy breathing stopped. what's going to happen next? >> a little carrot at the end of the road. now a whole nother level now and you're doing a certain kind of training here. what are you helping her with and what are her goals moving forward? >> i'm helping her with any cardio and keeping her motivated. usually this is the biggest problem to keep people going because i think the biggest problem in the fitness world and we stopped believing in ourselves. you don't have faith in ourselves anymore. and this is the hardest part for me adds a trainer to make people believe in this. most people say they don't have discipline but if you go to work and pay your bills and if you go to school, you are disciplined. you have to foe recushion that and put it -- refocus that and put it in the fitness field. >> what's actually your competition that you're working
6:14 am
on? >> fitness competition? >> really? what is that involved in poseoff kind of thing? is it really? wow. that's a big difference from probably your self-esteem level when you were overweight to that. >> that was something that i -- always wanted to do. but never really thought i could do it. so i thought i'm just going to just shoot for it and if it happens it happens. >> have you tried a competition yet? >> i've done two already. i did two last year, one in august and one in november. >> all right so give us one thing we are exhausted. we don't want to get up. there's a million excuses. i can't get the rear end off the couch. what's the one thing you do to get off the couch? >> the easiest thing is if you have the full body exercises this is moving the lower and the upper body. one -- we always thought warming up that's going to get you going if you just do the squats coming up and another squat. light shoulder press. >> sitting on the couch watching tv just do that and get off the couch and do that.
6:15 am
>> it's going to keep up your hormones collection and you actually want to start working out. >> yeah, lazlo, thank you, nice to meet you. congratulations you look fantastic. howard over to you. >> i was there yesterday but -- wow. isn't she an inspiration? >> yep. definitely. >> he says the best motivator to get you off the couch is a kick in the rear end. and he's ready to do it. but he'll put a smile on his face. >> hopefully not with the heart boom right? >> but she looks beat. >> you look great. excellent. >> and she feels even better. hey we have a nice morning out there. it's the afternoon that's kind of eh. the weekend is going to be fantastic this weekend as temperatures shoot through the 60s and potentially 70 by sunday. then cold again by the middle and hatter part of next week. mostly cloudy and chilly though at the bus stop. although a decent sunrise. not until 7:26. we have a lot of rain out on
6:16 am
the ohio valley. some of this is now sneaking in towards southwestern virginia into the carolinas. the stuff in the south and west that's really clouds there and that's not reaching the ground. the stuff from lynchburg south to the west virginia border. so a dry cold morning. 35 in fairfax. and burke. leesburg and ashburn are 36. montgomery county your in the mid 30s and rockville at 37. and andrews crofton at 35 along with college park and here in d.c. this morning, it's a nice quiet morning here. you're looking at -- somewhere east of town. i think it's over toward national airport. all lit up. 39 degrees we've got calm winds. skies now being reported as mostly cloudy. and with the calm winds, that 39 only feels like 39. it's january it could feel a lot colder than it has been. in fact to the north and the east we've got the cold air in northern new england. but just west of town, look at all these 50s in kentucky down to tennessee where nashville is
6:17 am
63-degrees at this hour. that warmth warrants to move in -- wants to move in our direction but it's got to get past the rain first which is what we're going to be dealing with today. then the 630s for saturday and sunday. the heavy stuff really coming out of indiana into ohio at this hour. the futurecast for us, we've got some clouds which are going to be increasing across the region this morning. by midday, a shower out to the west and our south. they'll be approaching the metro area here for the lunch hour. with us through the afternoon hours. out west though, by late afternoon, maybe all right for the drive home. we're going to hope we can get this stuff cleared of us by 5:00 p.m. maybe 5:30. so the afternoon commute is definitely going to be impact asked then tonight with the rain -- impacted and then tonight with the rain leaving some fog set up as temperatures stay in the 40s for overnight lows. highs today 50 degrees and some afternoon rain and showers. tonight low to mid-40s with patchy dense fog in spots. early clouds and fog saturday. partly sunny in the afternoon

6:22 am
6:23 am
welcome back. 6:22. your weather first on this friday morning. got a cold start. temperatures down in the 30s in most areas and it's going to be a wet afternoon. with highs around 50. so the day planner breaks out like this. increasing clouds this morning. as we see the morning temperature of 9:00 at 42. we'll be in the mid 40s by 11:00 and upper 40s to 50 for the high this afternoon. with showers likely during the afternoon hours and certainly could slow down the ride home. well, good morning everybody. was the original injury just a sprain? why was rg3 still running when he seemed to be laboring so much and why would a doctor being paid by the redskins make a statement that seemed to throw the franchise under the bus and then backtrack? bell, the team is not talking about it anymore. so those answers might be difficult to unearth. what we do know is that the season is over, rg3's knee is
6:24 am
spaghetti and dr. andrews repaired. now yesterday -- repaired it. now yesterday the doctor who was a consultant the griffin says the meniscus was repaired as well. oh by the way. the andrews didn't mention that in his -- dr. andrews didn't mention that in his statement. yesterday on the raid crow dr. an you -- radio dr. andrews saying quote -- all right, denver v. ravens, i'm calling this the senior citizens' aarp bowl. 36-year-old peyton manning the mile high hot broncos against baltimore and 37-year-old ray lewis. lewis though 0 for the last nine against manning but he insistst it's about more than stopping number 18. >> i think for my team you know the thing is, it ain't about you know, facing peyton. it's about you know daising the denver broncos and as a team that's our number one goal. playing the team that's won # 1
6:25 am
straight games, right now you know arguably they're the best team if football. >> they've won 11 in a row. should be a good one. ravens and broncos 4:30 saturday and the winner heading to the afc championship game. watch it right here on wusa9. all right, that's a quick look at sports have a great friday everybody. millions of visitors are expected in town with the president's second inauguration a little over a week away. >> what happens when you make all those people -- mix all these people with the flu? delia goncalves takes a look when we come back. 6:25. here's monika. >> there's an accident in bowie both directions of route 50 at route 197. here at the beltway in springfield, no problems heading to the mixing bowl northbound 95 incident-free as well. leaving route 644 from our sky 9. we'll be back with more news, weather and traffic when we return after the break. you're watching 9news now.

6:30 am
>> it is on the chilly site in the 30s but we have some stars visible as there are lot of breaks in the clouds now. the clouds though they're thickening up and some rain out of them in the afternoon. check out the camera in tysons corner looking east just little bit of light in the eastern sky now as we're still almost an hour until that sunrise at 7:26. we are going to see the sunrise but then cloudy by noon with the sprinkle or two 48. this afternoon, showers around. temperature high of the 50. and with your 5:00 p.m. temperature of 48 but much warmer air is just off to the west in the tennessee valley. that will be moving in tonight into tomorrow. clouds are trying to move in. we have some breaks now with some showers from roanoke to raleigh and especially from west virginia west. so that's why grab the rain gear for the afternoon. and you may need a heavier coat in spots this morning with 30 in manassas. la plata 32. 34 across the bay in easton and 35 in gaithersburg. i'll be back in a few minutes and we'll let you know how warm it's going to get this weekend.
6:31 am
you're going to like that. right now inside to monika samtani with timesaver traffic. a lot of issues right now coming in in the 6:00 hour. first of all, in bowie this accident happened i'd say about 30 minutes ago on the eastbound side of route 50. so outbound side of route 50 before 97 and the two left lanes are blocked there. and now authorities are also blocking the inbound side of route 50 with two left lanes. so in and out of bowie be very careful with the accident and expect only delays now forming also on the outbound side of route 50 here. a live look outside and show you what it looks like on the weltway. no issues here at branch avenue but an accident on the ramp from the outer loop to allentown road. this time over the 270 on the southbound side. no issues to report from frederick the beltway. there's an accident this one just reported on the outer loop ramp to georgia avenue in silver spring. a live look close by on the beltway here at colesville road. back with the two imaccidents coming up once again at 6:43.

6:33 am
to a million visitors coming into town for the inauguration? keep washing the hands. delia goncalves is here to at least address that issue and how we can track the nastiness. >> reporter: two words -- hand sanitizer folks. heading to the inauguration, hand sanitizer. you know doctors about saying that folks should stay away or be highly concerned about enjoying the inaugural celebration but you noetic some -- you know take some steps to take care of yourself. wash your hands and probably a good idea to get the flu shot before you head down to the area. but you know before we get started i have my handy kit here. it is a glow germ kit. you know one of the fastest ways this is a lotion this we put on. so as you guys are lotioning up, one of the ways that we spread the flu clearly is more than just you know, sneezing and coughing and the obvious signs. it's touching keyboards. it's touching pens. >> mouses, pens. >> reporter: it's a lot of things and to even when you
6:34 am
think you've washed and purelled -- the sneaky germs still creep up on you. >> i'm going to try mine. can i touch now? >> reporter: you can touch, touch a few things touch your neighbor and friends. and so you know, so -- i was -- i just picked up my daughter from day care yesterday right? she's 3 years old and they even talked about healthy hand washing habits. with 3-year-olds. washing your hands, singing little songs while you're soaping and sudsing up. then rinsing and using the paper towel that you dry your hand to shut the faucet off. to open the doorknob. things that people are always touching. so here is and i'll just touch a few items here. i'll touch your chair mike and we all know -- >> touch my sleep. >> ky feel the germ -- i can feel the germs. >> reporter: okay so we have the little -- with this l. e. d. light, you can just ultraviolet light you can see some of the germs on your hands. >> might be a little difficult to see on camera.
6:35 am
you can see it on the hand pretty well. what about the mouse? maybe we can hold that up. did that get any on that? i didn't want touch it very long. -- i didn't touch it very long. >> reporter: let's shake hands. that's like a fast way right? we'll do everything minus you know the obvious. >> turn down -- you can see it. >> reporter: now you can see. and so you know, we've been purelling all day long right essentially? still you -- it sticks around. so yeah let's all do it now. and clean ourselves up from -- now that we've spread the virus to each other. but you know, doctors are telling us that we really don't have an epidemic. do not be panicked. folks are heeding the advice and heading to the doctors -- >> we've also learned -- >> reporter: a lot of things to get the vaccines. >> right still plenty of vaccines here in maryland, virginia and d.c. >> what are the precaution us you need to take -- precautions you need to take every day of the week and year right? >> reporter: you know i mean
6:36 am
the flu this season has peaked a little sooner than normal. it's a stronger strain. but if you take these steps i think we'll all survive. >> good call. good call. thanks. >> calmed us down. well, just in case the nationwide flu outbreak is straining hospital emergency rooms in fact seeing supplies, most people are choosing to get the flu shot they've decided not to take their chances and in early harsh season. now here's what dr. anthony fauci one of the nation's leaders in infectious disease research said about the vaccine in year. >> with regard to the vaccine, the vaccine contains an h 3 n 2 that matches pretty well with what the circulating virus is. there's no guarantee it's going to be very protective but it's better to have a matched vaccine to the circulating virus than not. >> the maryland and virginia health departments tell 9news now there's still an adequate supply of vaccines, however 95% of the year's shots have
6:37 am
already been doled out so you may want to get a move on and be sure to call around before leaving the house to make sure the vaccine is where you're headed. >> now again depending on where you are some places are out of the vaccine or running low. but one of the places that is available laurel regional hospital. there is a free flu shot clinic next tuesday for people who live in that community. you can just go to the hospital between 2:00 and 7:00 in the afternoon and the free flu shots are available though to people who are 18 and over. find out everything you need to know about the flu on our website. wusa9.com. type in the word "flu" and you'll see all the stories we've done. check it out lot of good information about keeping you and your families protected. >> you see that map there you just put in the zip code and you can see where the flu shots are. other news now police are calling taft, california high school teach aerohero after he -- a hero after he risked his own life to save a student. it's a small town north of los

angeles. that's where edward lawrence has more on the story. >> reporter: police swarmed the union high school following reports of shots fired inside a classroom. >> i was like this can't be real like i didn't know what to do. i was in shock. >> reporter: police say a 16- year-old student walked in carrying a shotgun and opened fire. >> after he walked in, he pumped the gun. so the pump action rifle. he pumped it and just lifted it right away and shot. >> reporter: casey says she tried to help one of her classmates who was critically injured in the shooting. >> the guy that got shot i was holding him. and actually had blood on my sweatshirt from it. >> reporter: the local sheriff says the suspect told them he planned the shooting the night before. >> our 16-year-old student/suspect has tempt like he's been bullied for some time by a couple of students. >> reporter: they say the gunman and the victim has a history. >> he was an intended target we believe of the suspect. >> reporter: authorities say things could have been much worse if it weren't for the

heroic actions of a high school teacher. >> if you talked to students they probably all clearly enjoy his class. >> reporter: ryan heber was in the classroom. he talked to the shooter and convinced him to putt down the gun. >> he made the statement he didn't want to shoot the shooter and you want matily put the shotgun down. >> reporter: he's still in shock about what happened at the school. in t aft, california, edward lawrence for cbs news. our time is 6:39. jessica doyle is back with another your money report. >> let's talk money. specifically the future of the local economy. we always are saying we are in the bubble in the d.c. area. >> you know we used to have the bragging rights as having the strongest job market in the country. that has not been the case for some time now. and it's not changing anytime soon. we can blame the slowdown in government hiring in part for this. the nation's staggering debt levels have a lot to do with all of it with congress again debating the future size of the federal government. jobs and spending are very much
6:40 am
up in the air right now. that limbo will impact our job market and housing market yet again this year. and next year. here's some brand new predictions from the center for regional analysis. they're out today at george mason university. taking a look at some job numbers predicts. the region is expected to lose 22,000 federal jobs by 2017. a lot of that is due to the spending cuts we're expecting out of congress. but in a good way this is good news believe it or not. economists were originally predicting 450,000 jobs would be lost. at the same time, the washington region will still have net gain of 281,000 new jobs by 2017. most of those are actually coming in from the private sector and not related to the government. that's a big change for us. and a rebound in the housing sector will lead part of the way. the center says about 55,000 new construction jobs being added by 2017. that's about 20% of the new job goat for the region. the good news, we have these

private sector jobs being created. the bad news the jobs pay a lot less than the federal jobs that we're losing. so net -- not great. you know? and it all goes back to congress. >> but as you said it could have been -- a significantly exponentially worse. >> absolutely. >> so grain of salt. thanks jess. when we return, howard will have your weekend forecast. >> and he says it's going to feel like april. it is january. we just had new year's. it's going to be really warm. he'll tell you exactly what it means for you right after this.

6:45 on this friday morning. howard is here and he's the bearer of good news. >> yes, it is going to be nice and mild. except for skiers. nice and mild. but you have to wait another week or so. >> and then the cold is coming. >> through the second half of next week and inauguration weekend is kind of chilly. >> unless they want to travel. >> the snow areas right now they'll be making snow. as long as we can be cold enough to make snow that's fine. that's fine. we have the get there and it's not going to be happening this
6:46 am
weekend. it will be spring skiing conditions at best with temperatures well up in the 60s tomorrow and sunday. today though we start in the 30s. your bus stop forecast partly to mostly cloudy. chilly. it's going to be a pretty sunrise here coming up at 7:26. but on the cold side low 30s to low 40s the morning. and with the clouds moving in, and they'll move in pretty quickly looks like we're going to have -- pretty sky this morning. here in tysons corner. we have some nice breaks. for the clouds moving in and by noon 48. could be even a shower or two then and better chance of rain during the afternoon hours. so the evening commute. the ride home today could be on the wet side. with high temperatures with 50 in town. some areas north of town you're going to stay in the 40s and lots of rain look at this from around ohio, back into central kentucky and cincinnati seeing the heavy rain this morning. the highlighter rain showers for us coming out of north carolina in towards southwestern virginia over to roanoke and martinsville headed to lynchburg and that will be headed in our direction later this morning into the afternoon. 34 for easton and 35 hagerstown
6:47 am
and culpeper also 34. so temperatures fairly uniform here in the district. we've got partly sunny skies. again i believe we're going to have a pretty sunrise today. but not the sunset due to the increasing clouds. calm winds dew points 32. and the humidity at 76%. windchills will be a factor maybe to the second half of next week. here's the real cold stuff in the northern rockies it's not 60s all the way up to nashville this morning and that warmth is being lifted in our direction. thanks to the storm that hit texas a couple of days ago, the severe weather down in louisiana. well, the cold by the way lots of snow in the rockies, the skiers are really happy here. but the rain in the midwest that's helping to draw in the warmth for us and once reget rid of the rain the fog tonight and then low 60s tomorrow and pushing 70s in spots on sunday. today 50 degrees and afternoon showers. tonight low to mid-40s. the rain will end pretty early in not late this afternoon early this evening with fog setting up in many areas. so morning fog and clouds on saturday. some afternoon sun and 62. sunday, 68 degrees.
6:48 am
again pushing 70 in spots. little spring preview before we get some wet weather in here later monday. tuesday 60 and next weekend, looking chilly. let's go to monika samtani at 6:47. she's got timesaver traffic. so head outside this weekend and enjoy the weather. if you're heading outside right now, you're not going to enjoy this very much i'm sorry. on the outer loop of the beltway before georgia avenue, there's an accident in the left lane. that's in silver spring on the north side of town causing delays. then there's this accident on route 50 near route 1 or i-97. because of it slow traffic in both directions and i believe it's been moved to the shoulder. in fact a live look from sky 9 and it's on the shoulder just squeezing the lane there. again this is outbound or eastbound side of route 50 with flares still set up and police on the scene finishing up their paperwork and clean-up. be aware of that. let's take a look at the maps again. this time heading to the south
6:49 am
side of town. no issues on the northbound side of i-95 as you leave triangle into springfield. a live look one more time if you're planning to head here in springfield. looking great up toward the mixing bowl. and on to 395 up to the 14th street bridge. and i also want to let you know that the inaugural practice parade is sunday. and just like the real thing with the exception of the weather which is going to be great this weekend. there will be some street closures and parking restrictions, starting with the parking restrictions sunday, 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. affecting constitution avenue from first street northeast to 6th street northwest. pennsylvania avenue third street to 15th street northwest. and pennsylvania 17th to 19th street northwest. and 15th street from i. to independence avenue southwest. street closures are from 6:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. constitution avenue. first street northeast to 6th street. pennsylvania, third street to northwest to 15th street. pennsylvania avenue 17th street to 19th. and 15th street from i. to
6:50 am
independence avenue southwest. and one more thing to keep in mind, votes crossing -- streets crossing pennsylvania along the parade route will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to noon. again this is this sunday for the practice parade. for the real thing take metro and buy the passes early. back with more traffic. back to you guys. see you then monika. 6:50 now. let's answer the question of the morning now -- >> christy jewel wrote -- >> but the answer is a., drop the makeup in the toilet. remember, it's two out of ten women. that could be the start of a frustrating day. >> yeah just close the lid.

6:55 am
inevitable. >> throw in the towel. [ laughter ] >> great tool on our website. wusa9.com. you can put in your zip code. and it will tell you the areas in that zip code area that have available flu vaccines. >> the flu shot finder. >> right because some stores have kind of -- supply issues. >> yeah. thanks delia. all right. we'll be right back. our time is 6:55. >> keep it right here, weather, traffic one more time on your friday. we'll be right back. ñ??

all right, we're always hungry on the morning show and look at this. the newest secret sandwich at wendy's is a bit of a twist on the classic burger. the chain is testing a pretzel bacon cheeseburger featuring a hearty pretzel-like bun. this is what we think it will look like right? >> they think this will help
6:59 am
lure more customers to the sandwich. good luck. >> the pretzel bun and still a hamburger on this right? >> because we need more sodium in the burgering right? >> i'm sorry. >> loud? >> that's good. good tasting anyway. 50 degrees this afternoon with rain afternoon and some areas even late this morning will see the showers develop. early fog on saturday but 62. sunday 68 if not 70 and then more rain monday into tuesday as the colder air returns so enjoy the warmth. monika? we're going to show i the remains of the accident from our sky 9 on the eastbound or outbound side of route 50 near i-97 and bowie. and some slow traffic getting by. >> watching earnings season. >> that burger only available right now in the miami area.
