back in d.c.. the caps practiced in front of thousands of fans last night at verizon center. a scaled down version of fan appreciation night all because of the lockout. they start the season saturday in tampa bay. the home opener is tuesday against the jets. the puck drops at 7:00. the d.c. public school closure list is out and it's not as long as first feared. the original list presented by school chancellor henderson included 20 schools. >> there have been a few protests associated with this. the new list though names 15 schools 13 of which on the list are expected to close at the end of this school year. ko im has reaction. >> reporter: the signs for help at this northwest d.c. elementary school can come down now. >> garrison is not closing. >> oh really? i'm sure everybody will be excited to hear that. i didn't know that. that's good. okay. good. so everything worked. we had little signs up and everything. save our school. that's awesome. for the people who wanted on the able to -- to be able to return. >> we're paying too much and

offering too little. >> reporter: today the d.c. schools chancellor kaya henderson released the names. they were saved partly through partnership and also with hopes of high enrollment in the future. two schools will consolidate in ward 8 including mc tell elementary but another door stays open. johnson middle school will continue to operate because of safety reasons. officials citing possible fights and crews in the neighborhood. they'd save $8.5 million overall in savings from programming in the first year. but it doesn't add up for some in the community. >> to be shutting schools down and closing certain schools down, it's a big concern. the thing of it is kids can't go to psychological in their neighborhood -- school in their neighborhoods and have to travel across the town to go to school. it's not right. >> reporter: ko im. 9news now. >> you can get the full list on

wynetta wright and 1-year-old jaylin. he'll be sentenced in march and faces life in prison. the labor department is now giving some new powers to the mine, safety and health administration. the msha can now designate a company a repeat safety violator without any warning. it also means shorter appeals process if the company wants to appeal the warning. the goal is to improve safety at the country's most dangerous mines making sure that operators are held accountable for safety violations. it was made after the big explosion at the upper big branch mine in west virginia and 29 miners were killed in that blast. yesterday, a former superintendent at west virginia's upper big branch mine will spend 21 months in prison. we learned that yesterday. gary may was sentenced yesterday on federal conspiracy charge. may admitted to disabling a methane gas monitor and falsifying records in the days following the april 2010 blast at that mine.

great expectations, the s&p 500 starts this morning from a new five year high. we like that. the dow meantime climbed nearly 85 points and starts today at 13,596. and nasdaq rose by 18 points. some good news for the local housing market. foreclosures are down throughout the entire d.c. region. according to the foreclosure tracking firm realty track. foreclosure filings in rush region steady -- our region steadily declined during the last two years. but since 2010, completed foreclosures in the state have dropped nearly 60%. the district has the region's most improved foreclosure statistics. another washington institution is changing forever. the grocery store chain mcgrewer's has been in business in our area since 1875 and yesterday shoppers at the rockville store snatched up

bargains. the chevy chase store in northwest washington has already been sold. it's under new management but with the same name. that's kinds of a sad situation. >> yeah, people who grew up here sort of a bummer. >> is it very different the new owners are they making lots of changes already still going to -- or still going to feel at home? >> i think still keep the feeling there but some people were very upset. you know, one guy was even crying. >> really? >> because people are so attached to the brand. >> probably grew up with it their entire lives. well, are we winning the battle against cancer? >> new numbers from the american cancer society seem to be mixed but there's still some good news to tell you. >> we're glad you're waking up with us this friday. wusa9 returns in two minutes with more on that story and of course your weather first.

well, we made the changes if response to you. -- in response to you. you told us you wanted a simple clean and clear look. and we responded. first we reduced all the clutter. all the information is organized at the bottom of the screen. the big line is called the information bar and it's to give you detailed information about the current story. sometimes we'll add an extra detail about the story and you'll see it appear just above the information bar. right underneath the information bar, is the lineup. now it lists the next three stories in the newscast and it will move along throughout the show. it replaces that old rundown that used to be up there on the right side of your screen. the last line is the ticker. that features news, weather and other headlines. and color is a key part of the look. different types of stories get different colors just like those at "usa today" which is also owned by our parent company gannett. sports is dark red and lifestyle is purple, tech is orange, money is green and

breaking news is bright red. travel and traffic is aqua. opinion is in gray. tell us what do you think of the new look? log on to wusa9's facebook page and join the conversation. tell us what you think about how it looks and i think you might like it. we thought we'd have a little bit of snow yesterday and i was one of those who was saying look even if it does snow it's going to melt on contact. and add a little sleet. i think i saw a little bit of that. well south of town and really southwest of virginia got it and you know i think that's a good thing. so a storm that wasn't expected to be much underperformed. all right the dry air was out here and as the moisture was coming in it was -- you saw the radar, all brisk but just not reaching the ground. the lower levels just too dry. today it is going to be dry. a couple of snow showers up to the north. otherwise a sunny day. we're going to see temperatures dropping still this morning. into lower 30s by 9:00 and recovering to the mid 30s by

lunchtime. and by 3:00, 38. that will be close to the high for the day. i'm forecasting a high of 39 this afternoon. the other thing i want to point out the winds. you see them in the 17-mile an hour range? those are sustained winds gusts will be 20, 25 through the morning and then get lighter for the afternoon. so we do have improving conditions. storm system from yesterday which really hammered areas well south of us down here, well you see it pulling out into the ocean. southeastern new england saw a little bit of snow. but behind it, coming out of pennsylvania, we've been watching some flurries and snow showers this morning. hitting some of the northern suburbs across montgomery county, howard county, you see it on the border there. toward that -- tridelphia reservoir i believe. a couple of over snow showers and -- other snow showers and flurries this morning. shouldn't amount to much and temperatures are still above freezing but if it comes down a very light colting in one or two -- colting in one or two -- coating in one or two spots. williamsport 26. we're holding in the mid- to

upper 30s here with 37 in ashburn. 36 in centreville. we've got 36 from waldorf and bowie right now is at 35 with 38 here in the district. and as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, nice looking skies this morning. feels like 30 -- no, no it's not sunny yet but it is clear out there at reagan national with a northwest wind at 13. so windchills definitely are going to be a factor here for the morning hours today. talk about what's happening big picture the west is quiet. we've got this flow of northwesterly winds from the upper levels pushing another clipper system through the midwest. this is another surge of colder air, the cold is really up here. we're going to feel a little bit of it today. we're going to push it back north over the weekend and then next week it's really going to come in. coldest air of the season is going to be arriving monday, monday night. and by tuesday and wednesday, we're likely not going to get above freezing and we could be below freezing for maybe two, three days in a row coming up. so the futurecast a few snow

that year was the peak for cancer deaths. lung, colon, breast and prostate cancers saw the largest drop in numbers. but cancers of the liver, thyroid and pancreas are still on the rise. safeway food chain has responded to reports of a flu vaccine shortage. in fact it's shipped 200,000 additional flu vaccine doses to the united states and its supermarket pharmacies and roughly 60,000 of the shots are coming to the washington baltimore area. this comes at the fda announced it approved a brand of new flu vaccine called flu block. it's the first flu vaccine to be produced without eggs or even the influenza virus itself. instead, it is used with insect cells that are grown in steel tanks. those cells are programmed to make the flu virus protein the immune system reacts to. it lets scientists manufacture flu block faster than traditional flu vaccines. new research discovered a link between adolescent stress and severe mental illness later

coming up in a few minutes. back to you mike. all right thanks. maryland lawmakers are now working to take -- to make a change excuse me in a controversial ruling on pit bulls. last year, maryland's highest court labeled pit bulls as inherently dangerous and that ruling made it extremely difficult for owners to defend themselves in court over dog bite accusations. now they are working on legislation to give pit bull owners the same legal standing as owners of other broads. the first of the free inaugural parties begins tonight. the attire is typically black tie or inaugural chic which for men means a tux. what are you waiting for if you don't have one? >> okay. do you know your size? >> with just a few days left before parties and ceremonies kick into high gear. the formal wear at 19th and l. northwest is ready and waiting for the procrastinators.
