afternoon. here's the day planner on this friday morning. we've got good visibility. that storm system has pulled away. look for sunshine perhaps that early early flurry. 34 at 8:00. by noon, 36. it's going to be climbing into the upper 30s, 40 degrees for that high. so at 4:00, let me back down to 38 degrees and by 8:00, we'll be in the mid 30s and notice the wind speed really coming down into the 8, 6-mile an hour range this evening after gusing 20, 25 this morning. storm system pulling away. it did clip southeastern new england with a little bit of snow and clearly hit southern virginia just missing us. these are the snow showers and flurries i was talking about coming out of pennsylvania. and you can see a few of them that are trying to get even in toward areas of northeast d.c.. maybe sneaking into northwestern prince george's county coming out of montgomery through laurel and beltville at college park at this hour. just some stray flurries. temperatures are above freezing, low to mid-30s north and mid 30s la plata and 37

over in cambridge. monika samtani, it's nice and early. so traffic is going to be too much of an issue? no, it's not too much of an issue and it's friday morning. that combination is awesome if you're planning to head out early in the morning. no issues to report traveling northbound i-95 into springfield. 66 coming into fairfax right now. the beltway in-between through annandale. everything looks good. there's one accident though westbound on the suitland parkway near silver hill road. watch out for some police direction in that area. on the northbound side of i-395 here's north of duke street up to seminary road and the 14th street bridge. you're good to go. back to the maps this time out to the west side of town. 66 no issues in from manassas the toll road looks good from herndon and reston. this time all the way on the beltway other side at good luck road. prince george's county. i'll be back with more traffic in a few minutes. back to you guys. thanks monika. hundreds of thousands of people are finalizing their inaugural weekend plans. >> and all the celebrations

connected to monday's inauguration are starting to get underway now. after a lot of preparation. delia goncalves is live on capitol hill where the buzz is abuilding. good morning. >> reporter: good morning mike andrea. already seen a lot of activity here so far and i'm standing on some brand new sod so folks coming down to the mall will have a comfortable carpet-like sod to stand on. what about that? it will be cold but at least it will be fairly comfortable. listen the barricades will be built very soon. take a look at the police barricades. they're all stacked up, lined along the mall here. and a lot of the equipment already here. you see a number of pods and storage bins and the tents. and guess what? lines and lines of port-a- potties, yep they're here as well. everything is already in place. so crowds aren't expected to be quite as large as president obama's first inauguration. police and secret service have taken lessons from that day four years ago. and are promising a more

positive and visitor friendly experience when it kims to making -- comes to making it down here to the mall. while thousands already have their tickets tightened, many are still -- to attend, many are still searching and the black market is capitalizing as always selling tickets which ought to be free. >> craigslist and ebay, not to sell inaugural tickets for money. >> you would think that if booby prize we could get a few more tickets. >> reporter: now, that was d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton who was dishing out her tickets passing them out to lottery winners. so she passed them out to some lucky d.c. residents. each representative received 200 tickets, senators received 400 tickets, if you got your hands on a golden ticket and heading down here to the mall. i'll tell you what you need to know in regards to security coming up at 5:30. back to you mike? >> all right. thank you. she's live on the hill. a d.c. police officer is expected to spend the rest of

his life behind bars. thursday a prince george's county jury convicted richmond phillips of murdering his girlfriend and their young daughter in may 2011. phillips met 20-year-old wynetta wright hours before the case against him was headed to court and killed her. then he left their 1-year-old daughter jaylin strapped in her car seat where she died in the sweltering heat. the sentencing is scheduled for march. police are looking for two bold robbers this morning. apparently they walked into a restaurant and sprayed customers with fire extinguishers at ole mason restaurant in gaithersburg last night. all the customers were eating. then they grabbed the cash register and took off. montgomery county police say a similar attack happened last weekend but in that case they arrested four underage suspects. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> good day yesterday and potentially looking like a terrific friday could be on tap for wall street.

here's why. s&p 500 this morning stands at a new five year high. and we could see good earnings today from the licks of ge and morgan stanley. also tech stocks could get a boost today from install. they reported earnings which are better than expected and sales hit some forecasts. now looking at the markets right there -- here's part of the reason the markets are riding so high lately. investors have been going all in when it comes to stocks. they poured $8 billion into stock funds in just the first nine days of the new year. that's a record amount and it comes after yanking more than $150 billion from mutual funds last year. investors are also plowing a huge sum into international stocks so far this year. toyota says it's settled what was to be the first of hundreds of wrongful death

minutes and talking your weekend and some arctic air in that seven day. right now over to monika with a look at timesaver traffic. no issues to report if you're traveling around town right now. this is what it looks like up north on 695 at i-83. and closer in we're looking good on the beltway. coming in on 95 toward college park and over into silver spring. i'll have more on traffic coming up in a few minutes. back to you mike. thanks monika. at 5:10 here's a look at what's new this morning. this morning authorities near chicago will exhume the body of a recent lottery winner. he died in july just as he was about to collect $425,000. at first, the death was ruled natural causes but later, toxicology reports showed that he had a lethal dose of cyanide in his system. he couldn't have won without doping. lance armstrong confessed to oprah winfrey that he did use drugs during all seven of the tour de france victories. armstrong said for years he

told and retold one big lie about not using drugs. he apologized to his fans and the live strong cancer foundation. unless you live pretty well south of the district there's probably no snow in your yard this morning. but well over 100,000 people in virginia like roanoke area route 81, down bristol that way have lost power because of the storm that missed us, and hit them. they're also problems on the roads since the rain washed aid way some of the sand and -- away some of the sand and salt mixture and it stuck. we may have missed out on the snow but not missing out on all the cold weather. >> howard joins us after the break with the literal lowdown on the

morning in the 30s for the most part. we'll dip a few more degrees 34 by 8:00. northwest winds at 14 gusting 20, 25 early. we'll relax them this afternoon. by 4:00, 38. that will be close to the high for the day. and couple of you going to get 40, 41 and we're back in the mid 30s by 8:00 p.m. headed into the 20s tonight with lighter winds. that storm system which to the south if you looked at the radar yesterday there were radar echoes over us but the air was so dry at the surface it just sucked all moisture right out of the air. that storm clipping southeastern new england. but in the winds behind the system, some snow showers have been coming out of areas in pennsylvania. look at this. across our region through frederick, carol counties a couple of them on the northeast side of the metro area right now through montgomery county, just clipping into prince george's county as well. so you got a couple of flurries don't get too excited about it and it's not going to last very long. cold air, mid 20s in many areas of ohio and pennsylvania filtering in today. we're still holding on to the

mid- and upper 30s locally with manassas at 34 and round hill at 36 this morning. along with waldorf and crofton laurel also 36. and as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, it's a nice looking morning. we've got 38 degrees although with the winds out of the west northwest at 12 it feels like 30 out there. so you're going to need to bundle up some with those windchills. a little bit of a factor today but it's going to be next woke when things really get cold. now across the country big ridge out of the west. here's the cold air from the midwest and you see how the clouds are moving toward the southeast? very cold air up here and the snow showers are coming out of minnesota into wisconsin. although around here we're just saying good-bye to the storm. the cold air is to the north. get a little bit of id today and pushing back north over the weekend and next week the cold is going to come down big time. we really don't have too many weather concerns for the short- term. there's your forecast. blustery today. especially this morning. partly to mostly sunny skies

and high of 39. tonight 29 in town with low 20s north and west. good looking weekend up to 50 tomorrow. it's going to be the nicest day we're going to see in a while i tell you that. warmer with temperatures by tomorrow night still holding low to mid-30s. sunday a little bit cooler. still call it seasonable. sunshine 46. next week for inauguration day. only 35. it's going to be cold. but nothing compared to the arctic air that's going to be around for tuesday and wednesday with highs in the 20s. lows in the teens and maybe some single digits and back to 42 next thursday. all right, here comes monika samtani still smiling this friday morning. that's good news for the commute. you should be too. if you're one of the commuters that heads out early on a friday morning, a good time to go. no problems to report on the dulles toll road or 66. heading for the beltway the gw parkway as well. inside the beltway everything looks good. no issues to report. we'll take a live look first of all if you're planning to head southbound on 270 here on the spur near democracy boulevard no issues as with you travel down -- you travel down from frederick all the way to the

confusion over what happened to the foreign hostages in algeria. >> algerian forces launched a rescue operation at the natural gas facility yesterday. but that ended in the deaths of some of the hostages and some of their captors. it's believed some of the americans being held did escape. and irish citizen talked about his ordeal while the rescue attempt was still in progress. >> worldwide and they're there -- the military are firing over the top of us. >> that man did survive. a terrorist group called the masked brigade says the hostage taking is in retaliation for french ire strikes in nearby mali. the military turned town an assistance offer from the united states. now we're starting to look ahead to a very big weekend here in washington. maybe you scrambled to get a great seat or you're planning to brave the crowds in the middle of the national mall. the public inauguration ceremony for president obama isn't until monday but there's plenty going on between now and

then. delia goncalves is live on capitol hill with more on what you need to know. good morning delia. >> reporter: good morning mike. you know it is something magical about being here on the mall just days before the inauguration when you know thousands of people will be here. and it's quiet and dark and you see some activity kind of buzzing around. it's really an exciting time here in d.c.. and there'll be plenty of parties to celebrate what's about to happen. and explode here in the nation's capital. of course, we have the national day of service on saturday. we have the official swearing in ceremony at the white house on sunday. and monday it's all about the mall. 700,000 people are expected. a lot less than last year but everything is ready to go. including the barricades and security. 6,000 national guard troops from ten different states will be here. mpds, 4,000 officers will be joined by 3,000 from across the

country. not to mention the countless fbi, secret service, and atf agents. >> we hope and plan for and anticipate a safe and secure inauguration. >> currently we don't have any credible threat against any of the activities regarding the inauguration. >> reporter: and that is very good news. so while security and stiff security remains the same, there are going to be a lot of changes from last inauguration including that nightmare scenario when folks were stuck in that third street purple tunnel. well, that tunnel shut down. so hopefully that will not happen. there are lots of changes to make sure people get here on time. and enjoy the ceremony and not stuck in tunnels or in metros. so we'll let you know what the plans are for all of that coming up in the next half hour. back to you mike. >> that video was amazing. people singing in the tunnel.

it was awful for them. delia is live on capitol hill this morning. ore news now. anne arundel county executive john leopold waived a right to a jury trial. the judge is going to hear the opening statements today after dismissing a pool of potential jurors. leopold is facing charges of misconduct in office. prosecutors they 69-year-old republican used his police desail for personal and political purposes, among those accusations they include using officers as lookouts while he was having sex with a county employee inside a vehicle. now leopold maintains he says he's innocent. health officials in montgomery county have announced two more free flu vaccination clinics including one today. it's from 9:00 to noon at the jermantown health center. only injectable vaccine will be available and it's not preservative free. tuesday vaccines will be given at the dennis avenue health center in silver spring. you can make appointments

beyond wrinkles. >> with age we lose some of the plumpness in our lips and then of course with the brows with the tweezing and the plucking. you want to fill them in and of course undereye area we can't run from it. it's -- it happens. >> so sharon got down to work on donna addressing those areas. first apply concealer under the eyes using your ring finger. >> this is the finger that has the least amount of pressure in it. we don't want to damage any more skin around the eye area because we want to always look as beautiful as possible. >> put on your foundation and blend, blend and then blend some more. then, on to eyebrows. >> for me one of the things is filling in the brows because of course they frame your face. >> and don't forget that lip liner. >> i'll line the lips and then i'll go in and shade it in a little bit. when you shade it in a little bit you get your longevity out of it. you want your lips to last forever. >> just for fun some lashes and mascara of course.

the day planner this friday. we've got breezy conditions this morning where temperatures are really on the chilly side. there we go. quite a computer still a little sleepy too this friday morning. readings are going to be slow to climb because the colder air is coming in. in spite of seeing the sun by lunchtime we cover back into the -- recover back into the mid 30s. 40, 41 in the warmer area and the winds will morning will be gusting 20, 25, 30 miles an hour with sustained winds at 16. but by this afternoon is this this evening look how the numbers drop. 8, 4 miles an hour and lighter winds tonight and generally is sunny day ahead. we are looking forward to that as we say good-bye to the storm that stayed south of us. thought it was going to be a southern runner yesterday. we might get a little bit here in the district. the air was so dry that the moisture evaporated before it ever got down to the surface for most of us. a little bit of sleet here and there. even down in cattily that's down in fauquier county charlie had a little bit of rain and sleet. that was it.

this morning those are flurries and snow showers coming out of pennsylvania and coming right down 270. we've seen a few even make it all the way down to prince george's county this morning. but these are fairly light and really shouldn't pose much of a problem. temps a lot of cold air to the north. lots of low 20s pittsburgh now 21. williams port 24. that air mass is going to be moved to the region. currently we're in the 30s with fairfax at 34. college park 37. waldorf is 36 this morning and dumfries checking in at 32 and now some of the sensors are not national weather service sensors, give or take with a grain of road salt. nice visibility. the michael & son weather camera, we've got 38 right now. feels like 30 though with the west northwest winds at 12. and i've seen the gusts they've been gusting over 30 in winchester this past hour. so we've got this flow out of the northwest bringing some colder air to the great lakes. we'll push the cold back

first on this friday morning. so glad it's friday. and we've got some sunshine today. a few flurries early especially north and east of town. these temperatures have been dropping into the 30s you know drop a little bit more here towards 9:00 a.m. we've been looking at upper 20s in the shenandoah valley and western maryland with winds gusting this morning 20, 25 even 30 miles an hour. by lunchtime though, sunshine, 36 here in town. so it's going to be a brisk midday. highs upper 30s. 40 in culpeper. but we're going to stay dry and sunny most of the day. that's some good news after a dreary week. andrea over to you. we have a very special guest with us this morning. to help survive the inauguration. heloise is in town this weekend. she'll be this tonight and tomorrow for the expo home and garden. we thank you for sharing the tips. we have been hearing from howard that it's going to be sunny. 38.
