hello, i'm bruce johnson. join john. the national day of -- thank you for joining us. the national day of service kicks off a weekend of inaugural events in the nation's capital. today the president and first lady painted bookcases and helped with repairs inside a d.c. elementary school in northeast. thousands of volunteers in our area and across the country. they also volunteered for community service. it's all to honor the late martin luther king jr.. >> more importantly, everybody here, adults to children,

understands the importance of his impact. >> tomorrow president obama takes the oath after office at noon to begin his -- of office at noon to begin his second term of office. it will be a private ceremony at the white house and the public swearing in takes place monday at the capitol followed by the inaugural parade. the service project today was at the d.c. armory. our surae chinn reports people who came out today were volunteering on behalf of the military men and women. >> reporter: navy commander rodney blevins is paying it forward and showing his son -- >> volunteering. >> reporter: along the way. >> one more. ♪ there you go. >> good job. >> it's all about giving something back to the community and what better way to do that than to bring my son out and teach him how it's done? >> starting our day with community service, giving back. >> oh i think this is awesome. >> reporter: 10,000 volunteers are expected for the single

largest volunteer project for the national day of service. and by the end of the day for these volunteers, they'll make 100,000 of these kids. >> it speaks a lot to the american spirit to have everybody come out. >> reporter: there were helping hands from all types of volunteers filling care kits from families to the high- profile. homeland security secretary janet napolitano. vice president joe biden made a surprise visit. >> hey, how you doing? >> reporter: they all came not losing sight of why they came. army cadet casey gearry is hoping to brighten another soldier's day. >> i hope this letter finds you and your unit well and you smile at least as much as i did in writing it in thinking of you. >> reporter: a letter the likes of which she may one day receive herself. >> i'm glad to be able to come here as a cadet and give back to those who are already filling the shoes that i hope to one day fill myself. >> reporter: in southeast at

the d.c. armory, surae chinn, wusa9. >> lot of big stars are in town for the inaugural and some of the parties are getting underway this very evening. our ken molestina is outside the generation now party in northwest where john legend, common and t. payne are among the artists set to appear. >> reporter: you're right. washington, d.c. right now looking more like hollywood here with all the celebrities expected to come through town for the next couple of days. this is the ourtime.org inaugural party. it's hosted by will.i.am of the black eyed peas and we're expected to see a long list of politicians and celebrities coming through here. the show begins at about 8:00. just a little bit about this program. we're told that this is sort of the efforts to highlight the young american vote. they say this is a nonpartisan party so everyone is imsited but it -- invited but it's in fact to honor and highlight the young american vote that took place in this most recent election. and we're being told that this

design were hand picked to produce the all important floral arrangement for the president's inaugural luncheon. >> after the president is sworn in, he'll turn around, walk back into the capitol, and sit down for lunch. >> reporter: and before his very eyes will be jesse's design. >> i just glorious? i feel very comfortable that what we do will be well received because i know what the president and first lady like. they like contemporary, they like bright colors. >> reporter: perhaps the most interesting thing we learned is the life expectancy of the flowers. most people want them to live as long as they can, these ones are designed to die directly after lunch. >> an hour after the party but they were at full glory for the lunch, that's what we're after. >> reporter: jesse has been working on the event since august. months of hard work are boiled down to one little lunch. he says it's worth it. >> i feel very lucky that we're able to do it again. >> reporter: come monday the flowers will be here at the capitol all ready to go and perhaps the president or the

the inaugural events. when they leave, they'll leave behind tons of trash and debris. workers are already out this weekend clearing away trash in the national mall near downtown washington. they hope to make this event one of the greenest ever. much of that trash will be sorted for recycling and composting. that includes leftover food scraps and manure left behind by horses in monday's parade. people are arriving in d.c. this weekend and one group is celebrating with a little extra shine. jennifer shows thus glitz and glamour behind the california state society inaugural fashion show. >> reporter: a little light and glamour of hollywood found its way to washington this weekend. california on display with around 700 of its proudest supporter here to meet, greet and celebrate one of their strongest industries. >> california is just the home of the red carpet with hollywood and the glamour. >> reporter: this is the fourth time the california state

society has partnered with the fashion institute of design and merchandising for an inaugural luncheon and fashion show. it's an opportunity for californians to show off their state and pull out the red carpet. that's where you'll find the politician. >> all kinds of different styles. >> reporter: and behind all the lights, the people they represent. >> i was actually just proud to be here today and be representative of our state. >> reporter: with the best work of its students on display. >> the fashion institute has done a really great job of turning out talented students in fashion design and merchandising and retail. and so it really showcases the students and it also showcases the school as being a force to be reckoned with. >> reporter: a story for each costume from the phantom to barbie. >> it's our color and that represents i believe california a great deal. >> reporter: marying the world of fashion and politics on this weekend where each state shines as one part of a greater union. in washington, jennifer member

els, wusa9. >> the last outfit you saw was the student's ultimate assignment this weekend. d.c. officials are hoping for more than symbolism during president obama's second term. he agreed to put the no taxation without representation tags on both the limos. city leaders called it a small and important step. they say they prepare for the inaugural parade on monday. d.c. residents do not have two voting senators and a voting representative on capitol hill. >> we hope it signals, bruce, that this is a commitment to full enfranchisement for the 632,000 people in the city. we'll continue to advocate for that and we'll continue to work with the president and the white house on the other issues. >> you know the license plates are symbolic and there's value in the symbolism but there's substance and that's what we need to work on. >> president obama said in a

statement that living in the city for the past four years he has seen how unfair it is for working families in d.c. to work hard, raise children, and pay taxes without having a vote in congress. d.c.'s nonvoting delegate to congress introduced another bill called the new columbia admission act. if passed it would give the district state status and it would become the 51st state. the measure hasn't even come close to approval in past years. there's another separate bill that would give the district final say over its budget matters. still ahead on 9news now this night. how cold it's going to be this weekend. erica grow has the forecast just ahead. look, you he copd likme,

is our normal high for this time of year but the current temperature is 48. so our temperature right now is above what we would expect for our high this time of year. we got up to 54 degrees today. at reagan national. but in our weather headlines, after a fair and pleasant night, it will be cooler and a bit breezy tomorrow. and then the real arctic chill settles in starting on monday. just in time for that inaugural parade. a chance for some flurries but no real snow threat in our forecast. right now it is still 48 degrees in frederick. 46 in leesburg and manassas. same in culpeper and it's 48 degrees right now in luray. the temperatures are still feeling very nice well above what we expect this time of the year and also well above where we were at this time yesterday. 20 degrees warmer in frederick and hagerstown. 18 degrees warmer in manassas and 18 degrees warmer at andrews. you can see a weak cold front on the way on satellite ask radar. it's so mild, all the way up to buffalo that this is falling as rain showers. no real moisture to the south though. and that's why we're not

expecting any moisture with this frontal passage but we will see changes in the forecast as it does pass. overnight tonight 29 to 35. mostly clear with winds out of the south at 5 to 10 can then during the day tomorrow. still above average. 45 to 50 degrees and it will become partly cloudy in the afternoon as the front approaches. it will be breezy though and winds will be out of the northwest at 15 to 20 giving us windchills in the low 40s upper 30s maybe at times. but it will be a little bit colder up in foxboro, mass where the ravens are taking on the patriots. 32 to 40 degrees. still not new englanddy though. weather could be much worse for this time of year. and that will start to settle in as we head toward that inaugural parade. 30s and some flurries late and winds out of the north at 10 to 15. dress for the 20s if you're heading out to that inaugural parade and then it gets even colder as you head back to work. a high of 30 degrees on tuesday and make sure the kids are bundled up for the bus stop. those temperatures will be in

he was a stout 5'6" shorter than most of the players really but personal was as big as they came. earl weaver died friday night at the age of 82. he'll the forever remembered for one of the best managers in baltimore orioles history. waverer wasn't afraid to get in the faces of umpires. that resulted in 91 ejections over the course of his career but all was forgiven after six al east titles and four pennants. the three tile manager of the year was known as the earl of baltimore. a statue of him stands at camden yards. nationals' manager davey johnson released a statement today it reads in part -- i grew up in the minor leagues with earl weaver and we proceeded to spend a significant portion of our lives together. no one managed a ball club or a pitching staff better than earl. i will miss him every day. i know lots of orioles fans will as well.

immediately following their upset victory over nc state maryland head coach can only comment on his team's poor offensive performance. well, today down in chapel hill, it wasn't much different. the terps recorded their fourth straight game shootingless than 40%. the terps playing under all the tarheels blue banners. there's a lot of those there. maryland a mistake filled first half that carolina took full advantage of. a career day for him, 24 hints and 21 of those came in the first half. here, the terps did rally. does well and helps with the team high 21. but in the end, what the heck is going on? the terps j couldn't catch up. they lose to north carolina by ten. two blacksburg, virginia tech hosting wake forest in a nail biter. hokies one down and robert -- down one and robert brown gets it to go to give virginia tech the lead with 12 seconds left. the hokies hold on to win a nail biter 66-65. west virginia on the road
