into its fourth day, and there are signs the standoff may continue for some time. police are negotiating with the man holding a 5-year-old boy in a small underground bunker. the hostage has special needs and the police have been delivering medication. >> reporter: police are camped along this dirt road in midland city, alabama, waiting for something to give. nearby neighbhe is holed up. he's with 5-year-old boy. he took him off a school bus at gunpoint on tuesday. >> negotiators continue to communicate with the suspect and there's no reason to believe that the child has been harmed. >> reporter: michael is a pastor who ministered to children who were on the bus. >> they said they saw him, mr. dike stepped on the bus and demanded a few children.

>> reporter: the bus driver refused and he was shot to de h death. they've been talking to him through a pvc pipe and they've been able to deliver food and medicine to the boy who has special needs. >> we know he's crying for his mother and his grand parents. >> reporter: neighbors have their own stories about dikes. rhonda wilbur said he killed her dog for wandering onto his property. >> he took a lead pipe and he beat the dog until he thought that the dog was dead. >> reporter: police here are working toward a peaceful conclusion, but it could take time. they say dikes has been known to stay inside the shelter for as long as eight days at a time. marlie hall for cbs news, mittland city, alabama. an alaska airlines jet was forced to make an emergency landing when the pilot lost

conscious necessary. flight 473 was en route from seattle to los angeles last night. it was over oregon when the pilot passed out. the pilot was diverted to portland. the co-pilot landed the plane safely. there were 115 passengers and five crew members onboard the boeing 737. and through the night rescue crews in mexico city have been searching for people who were trapped by an explosion. at least 75 people -- or rather 25 people were killed by yesterday's afternoon blast in the basement of a downtown tower. more than a hundred were injured. the causes are unknown but one possibility is a building gas boiler. in central china today a truck carryingfire works skbloeded. at least five were killed, eight hospitalized. cars and trucks fell about a hundred feet to the ground. the cause of the explosion is

under investigation. and now to the economy. the labor department releases january's report this morning. the economy remains sluggish challenged by a steep decline in defense spending and the impact of higher social security taxes. susan mcginnis is in washington this morning. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. we have an economy still struggling despite positive signs like higher consumer spending and business. we expect sluggish growth in today's report. of course, any surprises there could jolt the market. wall street is eagerly awaiting the government's january jobs report. analysts predict the company added jobs last month but not enough to budge the unemployment rate from its current 7.8%. >> it's been a slow process. >> latoya patrick is one of america's estimate 12 million unemployed workers. she's been looking for a job since the fall after graduating with a master's degree.

>> i'm not going to lie. it's been tough sometimes. when you're home, you feel like i spent all this time going to school and it's like nobody's giving you a chance. >> economists say until more people like latoya find jobs the economy will continue to suffer. it shrank for the first time in three years. one day after that dismal gdp report, he disbanded the jobs council. ghav republicans here on capitol hill new ammunition to criticize him. speaker john boehner said the president trited his jobs more like a nuisance than starting job creation. >> they come from people object capitol hill who have consistently opposed every growth initiative and job creation initiative the president's put forward. >> the white house said it was

only intended to last two years. now that jobs council met four times in its first year, zero times in its second year. in its place the white house said it's going to work more with business groups and o'groups to try to boost the economy, fix the debt, and fix immigration. anne-marie? >> all right. president obama says he'll sign a measure raising the debt limit. it allows the treasury to borrow above the $16.4 trillion limit through may 18. without the measure the government would have defaulted on its obligation. also on capitol hill a tough go for president's nominee for secretary of defense. forrer republican senator chuck hagel got hammered by fellow republicans during his confirmation hearing. he's still expected to be confirmed but his appearance could have bon stronger. danielle nottingham has this report. >> reporter: senator john mccain

grilled chuck hagel about his opposition to the troop surge in iraq. >> and your refusal to answer whether you were right or wrong about it is going to have an impact on my judgment as to whether to vote for your confirmation or not. >> reporter: some republicans have said they won't support hagel. he tried to address their concern. >> i'm on the record many times in speeches and on the floor of the senate. in the book i wrote in 2008 says iran is a state sponsor of terrorism. >> reporter: hagel served as senator from nebraska for eight earring. during that time he made comments that are still under scrutiny. >> where we've been intimidated by the lobby to do something dumb. >> i can't give you any example. >> thank you. do you agree you shouldn't have said something like is that? >> yes, i do. >> reporter: if confirmed he'll

squalls, high winds, and a slick road contributed to the mile-long crash. in indiana, ten people were injured in a pileup west of indianapolis on thursday. 35 cars and trucks were involved in this crash. police say a snow squall reduced visibility and caused problems on the road. on "cbs moneywatch," and a beer merger might get blocked. ashley morrison is here with more. asian markets were mostly higher despite manufacturing data from china that that fell short of expectations. tokyo's nikkei added half a percent in its longest winning streak in 54 years while hong kong's hang seng was flat. despite a strong start to 2013, on wall street stocks sagged on thursday. the dow jones industrial average average closed down 49 points while the nasdaq was off a fraction. the annual spring surge in gasoline prices is getting an early start. the price at the pump rose 13 cents over the past two weeks.

a gallon of regular averages $3.42 nationwide. industry analysts attribute the rise to maintenance at the refineries, low inventories, and rising oil prices. >> t"the wall street journal" says hackers with possible ties to the chinese government says it broke into the computer system. cyber spies were trying to monitor its coverage to china. on wednesday night "the new york times" reported it was the target of chinese cyber spying. >> and the justice department is sueing to stop a $20 million merger between anheuser-busch. it's the nation's larger. the merger would lead to higher beer prices. >> no one wants to hear that this close to the super bowl, even though it wouldn't affect it, especially with chicken wigs

bloggers can help extend the pricey ad. it's been 30 years since apple's big ads revolutionalized it. it symbolizes empowerment and years later they handing over the biggest show case to their audience. >> people are going to be more involved than they ever have been before in terms of crowd sourcing and social media and actually voting on the outcome of ads. >> reporter: for a seventh straight air doritos will air a commercial made and submitted by fans and selected by online votes but they're more than just a means of saving money. >> consumers trust other consumers more than they do companies, and so featuring consumers is a way to get closer to them. >> reporter: the participation will be in realtime during the game. viewers will be asked to vote on how a race in this ad for coke will end. the winner will be revealed in a commercial at the end of the game.

another ad getting the trend out before the game. about half of this year's 30 advertisers are leasing teasers of their commercials to generate buzz before they air. in an interview with "cbs this morning," taco bell ceo greg kreets says he hopes people share the sneak peek of his company's super bowl ad. >> we've got 10 billion facebook fans. if you live in a social world, we love to share. i think you're going to find, stop, stop, a taco bell ad's coming. >> everything will be all right. yeah, man. >> reporter: but getting ad out early generated negative attention for volkswagen. some called this white actor speaking with a jamaican accent responded. now, according to youtube the early teaser videos that were
