hundreds of thousands still in the dark this evening. drivers having a tough time, but airport travel starting to improve after the massive northeast blizzard. hello everybody, i'm bruce johnson. we'll have more in just a moment. but first a 7 -- 71-year-old woman is killed in her residence. tonight, police are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. now the attack occurred in the 1200 block of chapel oaks drive yesterday afternoon. surae chinn was there today as

detectives canvas the area. >> reporter: the long-time friend would help his elderly neighbor get around. >> she was a very nice woman. i used to take her to the store, take her medicine, you know. and when i introduced that, it really blew me. >> reporter: detectives are talking to the neighbor of the 71-year-old. >> right now we're passing out flyers. it is saying a cash reward for anyone that has any information in reference to the murder of ms mcintire. >> reporter: she later died at the hospital. >> at this time it is all an investigation as to the suspect, the motive, things of that nature. >> this is not the same neighborhood it used to be. the same people that lived here, very few of them here. and these elderly people, they seem to be targeted. >> reporter: neighbors say there were recent home break- ins. but police will not say if it

is robbery that lead up to their murder. >> they are living in this neighborhood now and walking up and down the street at all times of the night. you don't know who is who and you have to be very careful. people around here are not used to locking their doors. >> reporter: she lived with her disabled daughter who has been in the hospital. >> it's a sad day for all of us out here. we're going to find who did this. >> surae chinn, wusa9. >> and she says that police don't have much to go on. only a vague description of the suspect. you can remain anonymous if you have any information in this case that will help investigators. call crime solvers at 1-866-411- 8477. again, 1-866-411-8477. if you are flying out of town tomorrow, you should call the airport first. but this evening airports in new york and boston are ramping up service following the massive snowstorm that crippled parts of the northeast. they lead to thousands of

flight delays and cancellations. about 300,000 homes and businesses still in the dark at this hour. a massive digout is still underway. >> reporter: cars are still having a tough time navigating the snowy roads in hartford, connecticut. this family went out for lunch and got stuck. >> thank you. thank you so much. >> luckily we got out of it. people were there to help us. >> reporter: across the northeast, millions of people are digging out from up to three feet of snow. thousands are still waiting for the lights and heat to come back on. crews are making progress with street cleaning, but the next challenge is getting rid of mountain of snow that's piling up all over town. bus service is getting back on track. they arrived on one of the first buses arriving here. the couple just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary,

getting home was an adventure. >> it is not amtrak. nothing was running. so we couldn't get up there. >> now you get to be snowed in together. >> yes, until valentine's day. >> reporter: air travel is also returning to normal after more than 5,000 flights were canceled on friday and saturday. and in new york crews are working to clear stranded cars from the long island express way. they are trying to get one of the businessest express ways open in time for monday morning's commute in new york city. cbs news, hartford, connecticut. >> reporter: the trains, they are operating on a limited schedule between new york and boston. the service between the two cities were canceled on saturday. and the prince george's county residents seem to have taken the water tonight as a result of the broken main near the intersection. we are talking about customers

here in that area. the wssc says that the water is safe for drinking, bathing, cleaning your floors. but the water, they should not use it for the baby formula or washing clothes in the washing machine as they may cause stains. a big send off for the soldiers headed to the new assignment. family and friends of some 60 national guardsman and women were there to see them off. they were joined by the d.c. delegate and representatives of the d.c. department and veteran's affair. soldiers are being deployed to cuba to support operations enduring freedom. it's expected to last about ten months. five crew members were hurt and others hurt when the drill went wrong. it happened during a rescue of the imagine industry. authorities said that cables snapped on the boat here

tonight there is a $1 million reward for information leading to the air force of christopher dorner. security for tonight's grammy award has been heightened because the ex-cop is still on the loose. dorner is accused of killing three people thus far. it's payback for him being kicked off the los angeles police department. every law enforcement agency in southern california is now on high alert as the search for dorner enters its fourth day. in the meantime l.a. police chief says he will reopen the investigation that lead to dorner's firing. >> dorner's allegations are about a police department that doesn't treat african americans fairly. and i don't think that's true. and i want to make sure that we

don't lose that precious ground that we have gained because of these allegations. and that is the totality of the reason that i will look at this investigation. >> this week helicopters were deployed. on the other hunt, police are looking into whether or not a taunting phone call could have come from dorner. we are just about 90 minutes away from the grammy awards. we've got a live look from people arriving here in l.a. the music industry's biggest names will be there. they're in the middle of the excitement. >> reporter: the biggest stars are in los angeles for the 55th annual grammy's awards. >> i'm glad to be here at the grammy's. >> reporter: cover star taylor swift is nominated for record of the year. >> you get to perform and then you get to watch the show

thousands of people lined up the street for the chinese new year's parade. the celebration is also known as the lunar new year. this year is the year of the snake. >> we have 12 different animals, which erupted different years for them here. and the idea about the people who were born this year of the snake, they tend to be very smart, very attractive. very intelligent, so it will be a very good year. >> a great celebration included floats, the traditional dragon dance and the martial arts demonstration. the new year celebration ends in 15 days for the next full moon. >> yes. all right. the year of the snake. >> that's right apparently. >> and today is a new moon. i guess it goes on the lunar cycle that way. >> we've got rain coming this way. it looks like it will arrive after midnight tonight. in the meantime we're in the

clear. take a look outside with the weather cam as you can see that we are still looking good out there. no puddles out there on the 14th street bridge and taking a live look at the jefferson memorial. right now temperatures, they are very mild. 43 degrees after sunset. we do not expect the temperatures to still be in the 40s. but here we are. the dew point is 19. so as the precipitation will start falling, i think it will evaporate before they reach the ground, but we will see more of that rain moving in after midnight and that's the rain that will reach the ground. and it will be at 8 miles per hour right now. temperatures are above freezing with the rain on the way. and the rain, they will lead to a wet monday morning commute. not slippery or slick. it doesn't look like we're going to have any icy spots out there, except for maybe the higher elevations, but most of it it will be wet out there. in the afternoon it will be breezy and mild. so at least the temperatures will be on the rise. right now 43 degrees in

leesburg. 41 in martinsburg and winchester. 44 in fredericksburg. so everyone, they are still well above freezing right now, but as this rain makes their way towards us, we will see some patches of below freezing temperatures. but for the most of us it will be just fine. you see that here on 9 future cast. we are just fine as we head into the overnight hours. all just green showing up on the radar. that means it will be falling as rain. as we head into the monday morning commute. more rain moving in. just in time to wake up and watch wusa9 in the morning. howard will be giving you the latest details. there might be some traffic snarls because of the possibility of pockets of heavier rain, but everybody moves out as we move into the afternoon. a couple dry days before the next system arrives. overnight the rain is arriving after midnight. 28 to 36. so yeah those higher elevations near the blue ridge, dipping to the temperature. boomers of us, they will stay above freezing tonight. then in the morning, 30s and

40s with the wind out of the south at 5 to 15. the temperatures are rising pretty quickly. we'll see that possibility of a few pockets of heavy rain, but not expecting any major problems out there. then in the afternoon it's gone. it's over and done with. breezy and mild with a high between 54 and 58 degrees. so it is a yellow alert day because of the morning rain and the breezy conditions. a high of 56 for the district. and then a beautiful day on tuesday with the high of 51 and mostly sunny skies. on wednesday, there is a possibility of a wintery mix that will be very light though. mostly during the overnight hours. we're still in the clear as of now. in your seven-day outlook after clearing out that wintery mix. a couple of nice days here. 47 degrees on both thursday and friday. but then it looks like an arctic plunge will be on the way. temperatures into the 30s for the afternoon highs next weekend. enjoy the mild stuff while you have it. >> right, maryland and virginia. a big test. >> it is a border war as they

being young and not sure how to win yet. a tough combination for the college basketball team living in the major conference like the acc. that's what they are right now, potential, sure. but ask yourself have they won a game when they have been pushed by a solid opponent? outside of nc state. not really. dixon in the house today.
