deserve a different vote. banana joe takes on the top prize at the westminster kennel dog show. this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, february 13th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning it appears the manhunt for a former los angeles policeman suspected in a deadly campaign against the l.a. police department is over. law enforcement officials believe the massive manhunt for christopher dorner end about 80 miles east of los angeles ended. he barricaded himself inside a cabin and opened fire. >> we know what needs to be done. >> the cabin suddenly caught fire and burnt to the ground. the sheriff's department says unidentified human remains have been found inside. now, everett lawrence is in big bear this morning.

good morning, edward. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. investigators, able to go inside the cabin this morn and found out there were the remains of a human body. they'll have to use forensic testing to positively i.d. the body but they do believe it's crist ter dorner. sources tell cbs news christopher dorner is inside this bushed out cabin. police cannot yet identify the body, but they do believe dorner was inside when the cabin caught fire. police had the cabin surrounded at the time. >> and there's. >> no indication at all. the police picked up his trail tuesday after someone reported being car jacked. >> mr. dorner jumped out in front of my truck, and he stopped me at gun point. he said i don't want to hurt you. he said get out walk up the road and take your dog with you.

cbs reporter carter evens captured the fire fight on his cell phone camera. two police officers were hit. one is now dead. the other wounded. officials focused their search on the big bear area testify police found his pickup truck burned. they went door to door searching for the suspect but they learned he didn't get very far from where his truck was found. >> the cabin he was hiding out in, and we don't know for how long, it could have been for some time, was actually across the street from the police command post where they'd been running this operation from. >> reporter: dorner is believed to have kill four people since february 3rd. he posted a manifesto on his facebook claiming he was seeking revenge for being fired from the lapd. until the remains can be positively identified, the lapd says they will continue protective details on 50 families. officers and their families who are named in the manifesto that

dorner wrote, and those protective details will last, again, until the body is positively identified. even lawrence in big bear. >> thank you very much. a determined president obama pressed his political agenda during the state of the union address. there was little kproem miez during last night's one-hour speech as the president pushed congress to push an issue ranging from gun control. he goes to north carolina to further outline his proposal. a just released cbs poll found 52% approve of the job president obama is doing but 54% believe the country is on the wrong track. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> hey, good morning, anne-marie. yeah, the president seemed emboldened and unyielding last night. he fleshed out a lot of themes from the inaugural address, talk about,000 get the middle class

thriving again and the economy and unveiled new initiative including universal preschool and voting initiative and raising minimum kwaj but he gave the speech before a deeply devietded congress, many of whom believe whelp it comes to the nation's problems, government is not the solution. >> fellow americans -- >> president obama used the first state of the union address of his second term to send a message to lawmaker, get to work. >> the american people don't expect government to solve every problem, but they do expect us to put the nation's interests before party. >> the hour-long speech focused mainly on economic ins and on the need for a divided cork to compromise. he said political brinksmanship, collateral cutdown. >> let's agree to keep the government open and pay our bills on time and always uphold the full faith and credit of it the united states of america.

>> the president drew strong applause when he announced 34,000 troops would return from afghanistan by this time next year, half the u.s. force there. he also got a standing ovation when he talked about gun laws. the president said bills on background checks and large magazines are being discussed and that lawmakers owe it to victims of gun violence to bring it to the floor. >> they deserve the vote. gabby giffords deserves a vote. the families of newtown deserve a vote. >> in the republican response florida senator marco rubio says the president's economic plans would hurt the middle class. >> mr. president obama, i don't oppose your plans because i want to protect the rich. i want to oppose the plan because i want to protect our neighbors. >> president obama will make his rally to the american people with rallies later in georgia and illinois. now, in an indication of how willing republicans are to compromise house speaker john boehner said yesterday immigration is about the only item on the president's list that has a chance of passing

this year. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you. well, the president also pushed his case for quick action on immigration reform. mr. obama called for stronger border security and a stronger pathway to earned citizenship. >> we know what needs to be done. and as we speak, bipartisan groups in both chambers are working to draft a billnd applaud their efforts. let's get this done. send me a comprehensivive bihm bill in the next few months and i'll sign it right away and america will be better for it. let's get it done. the president's proposals like immigration reform face die provided congress including a house that has an agenda of its own. nancy cordes has more. >> the republicans are not reacting so positively as they did to his inaugural address.

this time their address has been more muted and they did rise and applause a few times during his speech when he talked about immigration reform and some of his job creation proposals, when he talked about ending the war in afghanistan, and when he talked about improving health care for soldiers and veterans. but there are a number of things that he called for that will be very difficult to get through a republican-controlled house, most notably gun control measures, particular fwli when it comes to an assault weapons ban, but also some of his immigration ideas, some of his ideas when it comes to minimum wage which he'd like to see come to $9 an hour. republicans are saying let's see what you can get through the democratically controlled senate fit and then we'll consider your proposal. well, coming up on cbs, continuing coverage of the state of the union. we'll talk with them about the

well, this is one of the toughest jobs in new orleans, getting partiers off the street at the end of mardi gras. police tried to clear bourbon street. the crowd stepped aside briefly and then got back to having fun. the first day of lent for catholics around the world. this morning pope benedict will make his first public appearance since announcing his resignation. it's a time of uncertainty for the church which faces the challenge of picking the next pope. allen pizzey reports. >> reporter: the day after the news, st. peter's square was unusually quiet and while the cardinals began to informally

debate who would replace the 85-year-old pope, the vatican revealed benedict has a pacemaker. he got it before he was elected and the battery was replaced only a few months ago. in the wake of announcing he would resign, he'll stay in the background. according to papal spokesman father federico lombardi. >> the pope is a very discreet person. pope benedict xvi will surely say absolutely nothing. >> reporter: he'll report back to his backyard. the pope ordered renovations last summer, another sign that his decision to step down was made months ago. his suck sers will have to re-energize the church according to rome's anthony.

the all-time high in october of 2007. the nasdaq fell 5. gas prices keep going up. aaa says the cost of a gallon of gas nation wide is now $3.60. that's up 7 cents in one week and 30 cents in the last month, and it could get worse. the government says gas prices should peak at an average of $3.73 a gallon in may. comcast will buy the rest of nbcuniversal from ge way ahead of schedule. the cable company will purchase the remaining 49% for $16.7 billion. comcast will also buy nbc's 30 rockefeller plaza for 1.4 billion. comcast has owned a majority stake of nbcuniversal since january 2011. and good news for travelers. according to a new government report, airlines lost fewer bags last year. the nation's airlines lost three bags for every 1,000 passengers.

that's an 8% drop from 2011. some critic says that's because more passengers are carrying their own luggage. wrestling just got pinned by the international olympic committee. they voted to toss the sport out of the 2020 games. wres lidge has been part of the modern-day olympics since 1896 but they can vote to get back in when the it in kmit tee meets again in may. when we return, doggy drama. we'll meet the finalist including pooch who was named top banana. best in show at the 137th westminster kennel club dog show went to a little black dog who is starting his retirement on a high note. marlie hall was there for all the action. >> reporter: banana joe, an app enpincher is top dog at the abby westminster dog show. he took the title beating out an american sheepdog, a german wire-haired dog and a smooth fox ter yore. dog lovers had a mixed reaction. >> the apen pincher was a cute dog. >> reporter: not your kind of dog.

>> not my kind of dog. >> reporter: it takes a lot of hard work to get here. canine competitors undergo intensive grooming, and even a campaign to get familiar with the judges. the runner-up an old english sheepdog named swagger actually drew more cheers from the crowd than the aftfenpinscher. his handler said he showed like a rock star. >> this is a hard show for dogs that have been showing for three, four years, let alone a dog that's 20 months old and has only been to four dog shows in his life. >> reporter: while swagger is just beginning hiss career, banana joe is beginning to retire. he's heading back to netherlands after a victory lap. >> he's adorable. you put four of them together. you might get a whole dog. just joking. i have a little dog at home. coming up, republican

time to virginia. coming in on the dulles toll road and 66, everything is fine. no issues. a tiny bit of slow traffic from earlier this morning. had some construction in place there. let's take a live look on the northbound side of 395. north of duke street very quiet. no issues at all. back you to, andrea and mike. >> monika, thank you. we begin with a developing story from california. the former los angeles police officer turned suspected cop killer is believed to be dead. but police say they have not yet recovered a body. >> authorities say dorner barricaded himself in a cabin after a firefight with deputies. edward lawrence tells us one of those deputies was killed. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news that christopher dorner's body is inside this burned out cabin near big bear, california. police cannot yet identify the body but they do believe dorner was inside when the cabin caught fire. police had it surrounded at the time. >> reporter: there's no indication he escaped? >> we believe he was still in
