offset the budget cuts with targeting spending cuts and increases in revenue. republican can say, no deal. they won't sign off on any deal that includes tax hikes. >> he is far more interested in holding a campaign rally than senate democrats pass a plan. >> and if congress can't find a compromise to stop the cuts, lawmakers could find a way to delay them. setting up another fiscal deadline, taking the can down the road. speaking of delays, it could create big ones at the airport. that according to the u.s. travel association. some republicans argue, that's all exaggerated. let's have our own bruce leshan sort it all out. >> nearly 2/3 of us already think flying is too much of a hassle. the u.s. travel association says the sequester is likely to smack us with even more headaches. >> completely unacceptable.
7:01 pm
we have to get it together. >> they are saying we can't prosecute them for a job not well done. >> travel experts say if the sequestered cuts go through, you could just see a sea of red on these airport messaging boards. delay, delay, delay. it could take you an hour to get through the tsa check points, two to three hours if you have to get through customs. >> is there any hope you'll solve this by friday? >> there's hope, there's optimism. people who say we can't do it. >> the transportation secretary says $689 million in faa cuts will force him to furlough employees, including air traffic controllers and safety inspectors. tsa workers will face seven days of furloughs. the travel association wants you to text your member of congress while you are waiting in line. >> they can text delay to 877- 877 and let members of congress
7:02 pm
know how they feel about this process. >> some republicans say they are exaggerating the impact. >> the american people will never feel. >> but the airline pilot's association says travelers will feel it. >> make no mistake. we will maintain our current level of safety. and the only way is if we turn down the volume of air traffic. >> might be wise to avoid flying in the coming weeks. in hopes congress finally straightens this out. at reagan national, bruce leshan, wusa9. >> as if flying wasn't enough trouble. federal workers don't know a lot about the specifics, but a lot told us they are expecting to get those furlough notices on friday and of course with the furlough, comes a pay cut. >> i started 529 plans for my children and i would have to significantly cut back on that. and i guess we'll have to see. >> the white house has
7:03 pm
released a state by state breakdown of how they say the cuts would affect workers and you can find it on our website, wusa9.com. the list of programs that these budget cuts could affect is staggering. everything from head start to schools to vaccinations for kids to the military. they could extend to deployments in afghanistan. joining me now is paul singer, the congress and political editor for u.s.a. today. good to see you again. if you were a betting man wharks is the odds sequestration happens on friday? >> if i was a betting man? 95%. >> wow, okay. >> i don't see them coming to any kind of agreement in the next four or five days. in fact, i don't see any agreement likely until some of the pain begins to be felt and people start to see the impact and start to complain loudly. >> let's talk about that impact. the president painting a dismal pictures, long waits at airports, we just heard about that. not to mention those furloughs. he is exaggerating.
7:04 pm
who is lying here? >> well, there's no doubt about the amount of the budget cuts. the question will be sort of how it is implemented. in a washington area, i'm not sure it matters who is right. what i mean is this, you could argue that you wouldn't have to shut down government services if you took those expenses or costs out of some other part of government. the problem in washington is, if you basically protect government employees, then you have to save your money by laying off contractors. that all that does is shift the pain from your house to your neighbor's house in this area. >> let's talk about the exact numbers here. $109billion in cuts is coming your way for fiscal 2013. that sounds a lot of money until you realize a $3.5 trillion budget. so why then is this such a big deal? >> part of the reason it's a big deal is because it is crunched into the back end of the fiscal year. instead of being a full year cut, they have to make up this entire budget cut in about 8
7:05 pm
months of the fiscal year. so that means it has to be done between now and september. that crunches that budget cut into a smaller portion and it cuts up a larger chunk of the budget. could be as much as 8 or 9 percent of the budget. >> it's interesting to me to note as well, this is a ten- year situation. i mean, it's supposed to be $1.2 trillion in cuts over ten years. does that mean if there's no deal, we'll be going through this over and over again? >> yes. that's the whole point. and one of the reasons that this was implemented is because it was such an unpleasant and frankly, dumb way to make governing decisions that nobody would let it happen. and my suspicion is, over the long-term, it will be replaced by other kinds of cuts or revenue increases. this is not a strategic way to make decisions. everything from, you new york faa tower, they get the same cut no matter how we rank them
7:06 pm
in importance. it's silly. >> paul singer, thank you so much. you have to believe when the pain starts, as you noted, congress will have to act and do something. just don't know what. >> thanks, paul. appreciate it. >> now on our website, we are asking, should congress face penalties if federal workers end up having to pay the price in terms of furloughs and pay cuts? weigh in at wusa9.com. while you're there, check the petition we created with our partners at pop box. so far, more than 1800 folks have weighed in and this is sent letters to their congress members on capitol hill. and you can share your thoughts with me as well. the address, mailbag@wusa9.com. moving on to other news, police in virginia looking for a person of interest in connection with the murders of an elderly couple in fauquier county. they want to question 60-year- old john wesley jeffries about those crimes. he was last seen near fredericksburg. officers say he got a violent criminal history and listed as a sexually violent offender.
