this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, june 17th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, the president is in northern ireland this morning for the start of the two-day g-8 summit. mr. obama arrived the morning for a meeting with seven other 4r50eders of the world's top economic powers, but while the world is discussing trade and what to do about the ailing economy the war in syria is about to dominate. security is tight at the lakeside golf resort where this summit is being held. along with syria, another topic that might come up is some top-level eavesdropping among foreign diplomats. president obama is on his way to northern ireland to meet with world leaders at the g-8 summit.

syria is not normally on the docket but is expected to dominate the talks. >> there are very being differences between the analysis of what happened in syria and who is to blame. president vladimir putin says the rebels in syria are terrorists and barbarians who have even practiced cannibalism. >> are these the ones you want to support? are these the ones you want to give weapon ons. the conversation comes after a new report reveals the u.s. and uk spied on ryu shorthand others at another summit. the "guardian" newspaper says it has evidence that they spired on the london summit of 2009 hacking into smartphones and

reading e-mails. the source? edward snowden. >> how much damage he did do? the fact is that time will tell. >> on cbs's "face the nation," chief of staff dennis mcdonough says snowden's acts have hurt america. >> to get around our techniques and practices. >> a british foreign service spokesman declined to comment on the spying allegation. and we are awaiting comments from the president from northern ireland in about half an hour. sus anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. the syrian blamed the attack on rebels. there are unconfirmed reports of casualties. also on sunday, amateur video appears to show amateurs appear to be attacking forces. there were no reports of casualties. and we're learning more

about the massive intelligence programs leaked by contractor edward snowden. as chip reid reports, the scope of the program appears to be limited. >> reporter: the national security agency collects phone records on tens of millions of americans, but documents sent to congress this weekend says fewer than 300 were identified l'dent year. releasing that information is part of the effort by the obama to alleviate fears about the nsa's surveillance programs. white house chief of staff's dennis mcdonough appeared on cbs's "face the nation." >> does the president feel he has violated the privacy of any american? >> he does not. >> reporter: edward snowden admits he leaked information on the programs to the media. >> he claimed, for example, he

snowden as a traitor. he said the one question that needs to be answered is if he's maybe a spy for china. >> i'm deeply suspicious because he went to china. that's not place where you ordinarily want to go if you're interested in freedom and liberty and so fort. so it raises a question if he had a connection before he did this. >> snowden is still believed to be in hong kong. labor groups in turkey are called for strikes. last night police used tear gas and water cannons against protesters near the u.s. embassy in anchor rah, the cap pal. . and the u.s. is hoping the election of a moderate clearic and reformist as iran's new president will help resolve the dispute over iran's knew clooer

ambitions. his victory came as a surprise. still, even as the new president, he is accountable to the hardliners in the iranian government. in north korea it says it's ready for high-level talks with the u.s. the obama administration says any talks must include north korea taking steps to scrap its nuclear weapons program. north korea says the meeting should not include preconditions. in colorado, the black forest fire is now 65% contained. it's already burned 22 square miles, though, and killed two people. officials say someone started the fire, but they don't know whether it was an accident or arson. thousands of homeowners are finally returning, and bigad shaban caught up with two of them. >> reporter: those of the front line hope to have it thoroughly contained by thursday. it's supposed to have destroyed over 500 homes including daryl

fortner's home. >> what do you do now? >> rebuild our lives. the fire destroyed all of his vehicles and equipment i couldn't believe it. i didn't want to believe it. >> reporter: fortner was out of town with when the fire started. by the time he returned the authorities wouldn't let him get any of his belongings. >> i want to thank them for not letting me get to my house because if i would have got there, i would have stayed there. >> reporter: crews are putting out hot spots but they're urging county residents to be patient. >> i don't want to create a false hope that everybody's going to return home because that's not going to happen. bruce lockwood is spending his 48th birthday and father's day at home. >> reporter: what was your fear?

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new york, thunderstorms, partly sunny in miami. thunderstorms in chicago and dallas. dallas pretty hot with a high of 94. los angeles, clouds and sun. and time now for a check of the national forecast. expect showers and thunderstorms across the south and midwest. hail and isolated tornadoes are possible in west kansas and southwest nebraska. more scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible in the northeast. and temperatures could hit 100 degrees from southern california to new mexico. in sports now, an englishman is this year's u.s. open champion. justin rose captured his first major championship. rose finished at 1 over for the championship. two shots ahead of phil mickelson and jason day. rose is the first englishman to win america's championship in 43
