are not as good against left handers as vernon wells, wells hitting .300, gardner .242. gardner will be back up probably in this game go it goes to the ninth inning. got to figure if it doesn't, the yankees are going to lose anyway. but it's a bit strange to pinch hit for gardner in this situation. a lot of ways gardner can get on base. >> kenny: slow roller. and middlebrooks unable to bare hand it. wells safe at first. stewart moves to second and the inning continues. >> tim: i'm sure it's a base hit. middlebrooks tried to bare hand it and the ball came up on him. so wells does get on there even though it's an infield hit. sometimes hitters put balls in the spots where nobody can make the play.

that's what's scheduled to happen. that's pretty good. rarely does an allstar matchup pitch after the allstar game. scherzer pitched one inning because he started for the tigers the previous saturday and jim leland did not want to use a pitcher who pitched that saturday more than one inning of the allstar game. >> tim: right. >> kenny: david ortiz, one for three. doubled, came around to score in the fourth inning. they added two runs in the sixth.

trade with texas prior to the 2004 season, as cano bounces one foul back behind first, you and i talked about this last week during a telecast from san francisco, a-rod to the yankees. soriano to the texas rangers. now, the yankees provided texas with a list of five other players. rangers were able to choose one of the five. cano was actually on that list. but texas went with joaquin arias to be -- >> tim: you have a lot of decisions to make as a general manager. we talked about ben cherington and cash man. sometimes they're wrong. that was -- everybody knows now, the wrong decision. you also look at how the course of baseball history would have

>> kenny: right-hander, junichi tazawa has a scoreless hitting streak against the yankees dating back two seasons with one away here in the top of the eighth inning. he will face alfonso soriano, who is two for three today. now 15 for his last 21. it's the first time he comes to the plate, tim, in today's game without leading off an inning. >> tim: but still with nobody on. >> kenny: two singles for soriano today. facing tazawa for the first time and for more on robinson cano, we head to ken. >> ken: what has happened is the yankees, we can see them being

in somewhat of a decaying state. they might not represent as appealing a long-term option far cano as they once did. the other change and a big one is that he switched agents going from scott forest to a partnership of jay z and creative artist agency. if jay z wants to make a huge splash with him, you can have that opening for the dodgers or even another club. but the dodgers have obviously the biggest threat. they might choose, instead, to give extensions to clayton kershaw and hanley ramirez. they don't have unlimited money, but we have yet to see proof of that yet. they could trade an outfielder and maybe robby cano will be in l.a. next season. >> tim: both could be available, at least one of the two, not both. no way they get rid of puig.

yasiel puig, the sensational right fielder who put l.a. on its ear. arriving june 3rd and that's when the dodgers took off. more than coincidental. >> kenny: i read some quotes from cano's father jose who pitched briefly in the major leagues with the houston astros. >> tim: and the allstar games. >> kenny: that's right in the home run derby. >> tim: to robinson. >> kenny: his personal pitcher. jose cano said he would love robinson to stay with the yankees. it's an easy trip for him. >> tim: that's an interesting comment by ken rosenthal. the decaying state of the yankee farm system and the future for them. i think it bodes well for the dodgers offhand. dodgers with as much money as the yankees now.

and a brighter future, especially if they go to the world series this year. who is going to beat them. you never know in the first round, the 3 out of 5 or the 4 out of 7 in the lcs. the dodgers, i think, would be odds-on favorite if they continue to play anywhere like they have for the last two months. >> kenny: now 2-2.
