issue one. 50 yearsce sin dallas. if you were alive on that dreadful day you'll never forget it. 50 years ago november 22, 1963 president john f. kennedy was assassinated by gunfire as he road through his motorcade through dallas, texas. president kennedy was 46 years old. 35th president of the united states. three years into his one and only presidential term. president kennedy's funeral was marveled that after another assassinated president. abraham lincoln. the protocal was chose by his
6:33 am
widow. the casket was drawn by horses down pennsylvania avenue to the capitol building where jackie, caroline and john jr. were waiting. john jr. famously saluted his father. a symbolic force to st. matthew's cathedral where funeral services were held. president kennedy was buried in arlington national cemetery where an eternal flame burns apt his grave site. question, what is the legacy of the kennedy presidency? >> john was young, made for the television age. had a wonderful sense of humor. he was an inspirational figure. what sered the soul of america was us watching the horrible way he died. the race to the hospital.
6:34 am
taken in the casket to washington, d.c. the whole funeral and shooting of oswald on that sunday. that impressed upon us what kennedy was. there would not have been a camelot had there not been dallas. after that, if you want to separate out the record of the man and the president, that's a different thing. that's moved away from what we are all calling memory. you can't see the films 50 years later without stirring up the emotions you felt. >> terrible weekend. >> secretary of defense. he got more notoriety during johnson's term in office. kennedy's presidency upped the number of advisors and did not
6:35 am
send combat troops. >> mismanagement. >> i don't know that you have any evidence to say that. >> he was aware of that. i don't know if he is in that. the kennedy presidency, however short it was was more than vietnam. he walked us back from the brink of nuclear war. he inspired young people to public service and elevated the feelings about what government could do, at the same time, the famous line in the inaugural speech he asked much of the american people. the state's program, peace corp, these are all significant achievements we remember him for today. patt is right, he is frozen in time. he'll always be young and popular. he certainly shows what a president can achieve against
6:36 am
many odds. >> peace corp was a big one. >> 200,000 people. 139 countries. certainly his legacy is creating the peace corp. it is the presidency that was about image and there are a lot of unanswered questions. would they have escalated the war in vietnam. would they have left the conflict to the country to deal with. that's a lot that's unknown. a lot will never be known. he won on charisma and the fact he looked good on television. he reminds me a lot of the current president, in the way he won his presidency. >> he is seen as a clear eye cold warrior. what explains kennedy's ability to be all things to call people? >> i don't know if he was all things to all people. in different parts of the
6:37 am
presidency he had appeal to the liberals. he was a pragmatist. that came through about him. he could govern the country in a different way. it wasn't just all ideological. i think there is something else about him that i have never gotten over. he just transformed the way the country felt about itself. he transformed the way we felt about him. he transformed the way we felt about ourselves. we saw this man come out. it was the first time television was the dominant media. he was magnificent. he inspired a lot of people, particularly to have a lot of people go into public service. he set an example that had not existed for the baby-boomer generation. he is still somebody who is missed in some way in this country. there was something about him that made everybody feel good. that doesn't exist today. >> you must note that jackie
6:38 am
contributed to the camelot mystique. >> so did jackie and john and caroline. she is our ambassador to japan. we treasure the memory of that family. >> it was in the air. it one as though jackie invented this. >> his response to jackie, she said what do you wato do tonight? he said i want to see camelot. >> she told teddy white this is something she wanted. he was 30 years younger than eisenhower. television was just coming in. it was a whole new generation. the whole new generation of real change from the post era. was it a conspiracy? >> i have doubts he was
6:39 am
motivated by himself. i'm not sure if anybody else was involved. i don't go down that road, with respect to the grassy nole and all of that. i have serious questions about whether they got to the bottom of lee harvey oswald's time and influence from cuba and russia. >> secretary of state can john kerry isn't the only one to harbor questions about the motives of the assassin of president kennedy, lee harvey oswald who also shot to death a dallas police officer and wounded texas governor connelly. oswald s killed two days later as he was held in the dallas city jail. the shooter was jack ruby, a local nightclub owner. a poll taken after the assassination found 52% of the public thought lee harvey oswald had not acted alone.
6:40 am
today 61% think oswald had full conspiracy. that's down from a high of 81% who thought so in the 90s after oliver stone's film j.f.k. true, the tragedy has all the makings of a conspiracy. oswald was a former u.s. marine with a medal for marksmanship. he earlier defect today the soviet union. he lived in russia for several years and married a soviet woman. when he return today the united states he became involved in cuba's conflicts, notably pro castro. two months before the assassination oswald went to mexico where he visited. they concluded oswald acted alone. at the time the commissioners
6:41 am
were unaware of the plan of the u.s. cia to oust fidel castro including assassination. during the years theories implied that the kgb, cuba, mafia, cia and kennedy's vice president lyndon johnson were the assassins. >> this has to be taken seriously. when our current secretary of state says to this day i have serious doubts lee harvey oswald acted alone. i have doubts he was motivated by himself. >> who does he think kerry think shot john walker, the general from oxford, mississippi, the right winger he shot to kill and did kill him. did they have a conspiracy to help him kill general walker? >> who knows. >> if there would have been a
6:42 am
conspiracy it would have been uncovered. >> we have put out instructions to take castro out. >> bobby kennedy was calling every other day saying what are we doing about castro? >> why were the kennedy's concerned about castro? >> after the cuban missle crisis kennedy's had given a statement they would not invade cuba. >> why was the cuban missle event so serious in his thinking? >> they put ballistic missles into cuba which would have blown up washington, d.c. >> how did kennedy escape from that net? >> he ordered them out and gave a secret deal to take out missles from italy to turkey. >> so a deal was cut? >> yes. >> there was a time when there was serious concern about castro. was there concern about eliminating him? >> castro wanted to fire
6:43 am
missles. there has been talk the cia, pushed by the kennedy's were out to kill castro and get his beard falling out. >> who was the head of the cia? was it fitzgerald. >> helms was the director of operation. >> kennedy's had a problem with castro. it was a serious problem. there was a question reporting long range missles in cuba. >> kennedy was at odds with the joint chiefs, military and cia. part grew out of the bay of pig. part grew out of the fact he doesn't want to respond militarily to the cuban missle crisis. he alone walked us back. i think there was concern, even in the kennedy family, this could have been internal. >> no evidence has ever surface today the contrary that nobody
6:44 am
has put together the wider conspiracy. it is hard to accept that this one lone guy with a $19 rifle could disrupt american history to that extent. people will keep looking. all the records won't be released for another three years. >> lee harvey oswald acted alone said john kerry. consider this item from the wall street journal about the start of j.f.k.'s texas trip, during which he made a public appearance in fort worth, texas. >> on the morning of the 22nd, the president gazed from the window of that hotel room prior to his brief talk in the parking lot below and remarked to his aid of o'donnell, just look at that platform. with all these buildings around us the secret service could not stop someone who really wanted
6:45 am
to get you, unquote. >> did j.f.k. have an inking of his own ability? >> he knew he would be driving in an open car. to me, i can't believe they allowed him to ride down the street like that. >> other presidents had been shot. this had been other assassination attempts. >> the waters were not calm until then. he had problems. we had problems with cuba. >> they did not anticipate an assassination. it was not bulletproof. >> they took it off at the airport when it stopped raining. they took the bubble off the limo. kennedy was clearly enjoying
6:46 am
himself. >> is secretary of state john kerry's hunch right? does the answer of j.f.k.'s assassination lie with cuba and russia? yes or no? >> i have a problem with the second bullet. it is hard to see. we tested it in st. louis at the time you could fire those three bullets in that short of time. we took a guy from the marines who was a marksman. he could not do it. >> i think, if something was really there, we would know it by now. i'm looking at the rest of the fbi and cia files. a lot has been destroyed. >> how about that? >> i agree, somebody would have talked by now. if there is a conspiracy and more people were involved, somebody would have said something at this point. >> there is enough strange information to raise these questions. with nothing that's come out, i just have to say no. i don't see that this is a conspiracy. until this is much, much more evidence. >> i would agree with the secretary of state.
6:47 am
i don't believe a single person. >> that may be the only thing you agree with him on. but at least you have something. >> let this be a matter of record. you can watch us on any day of the week from anywhere in the world. when we come back teheran's torpedo.

6:50 am
issue two. teherans torpedo. >> we do not want iran having nuclear weapons. it would be, not only dangerous to us and our allies, but it be disstabilize the entire region to trigger a nuclear arms race to make life dangerous for all of us. our policy is iran can not have nuclear weapons. >> folks in geneva, were jawed this week after a speech by iran's supreme leader. speaking to a gathering, iran's power military malicia, he accused the united states of war crimes extending from iraq to world war ii japan, when the u.s. be the first nation to
6:51 am
use nuclear weapons. in a swipe at israel, he said the jewish state was dirty, rapid. called israel an evil power. the regime is due to destruction. in terms of prospects for agreement on iran's nuclear program, whereby iran would expand urianiam inrich. it was iran that insist not one step back could be taken with regard to the iranian nation's rights. red lines and limiteds exist, which must be respected. >> whether or not there is an interim agreement is reached now, what are the implications of quote red lines on prospects for a final agreement with iran's nuclear program. what about that?
6:52 am
what do we know about iran? >> i don't think this is going to destroy the possibility of a deal. sounds like they are on the verge of getting something. secretary of state john kerry is going to be joining these talks. that means they are on the verge of having an agreement. it will be a six month holding off on nuclear development. it sounds like iran wants the ability to keep enriching uranium. from what we are reading about secretary of state kerry sounds like they are getting close. it is promising. i don't think these comments will kill that. >> this is a holding action. >> who is calling the shots? >> the new guys were honey. the other guys were just elected. they are moderates and they want a deal, in my judgement. the bottom line is very simple. we retain the right to erich having signed the nuclear
6:53 am
treaty and candidly thone, opis the deal. they are not going to say anything about it, they are going to put limits on what they can enrich, where, how much, how much they have to give up. the makings of a deal are there, i think, because i don't believe wants an atom bomb. they want out of the sanctions. >> they want to show they are not really enriching. they are getting a lot from this, too. the u.s. is going to lighten up on sanctions in return. iran has been hurt by them. it is an appealing deal for them. >> comedy was setting up the deal by. >> i don't believe this is a wonderful deal for the united
6:54 am
states and other countries. they understand where iran is coming from. if you look at the deal this administration was set to make before it was a disgrace. it did not protect us at all. in terms of what want toed to prevent, i'm anxious about what they are talking about now. >> freezing the nuclear program six months is not a disgrace. it opens the window for more negotiations. the only alternative critics have is military action. >> no deal. we get a war. it is either a deal or a war. >> the question is what do you have if you have a deal that does not prevent iran? >> you freeze every program and you put inspectors all over every single nuclear site they have. >> they are not freezing them. >> that's the deal or we won't sign it. >> if it is the deal they were prepared to make before.
6:55 am
>> you enter a six month deal which is free. >> they can continue construction. >> they need an auxiliary plant to turn plutonium into weapon's grade. >> you can ration the sanctions. >> he knows less about this issue than i think he knows. >> he has probably less ideological bias than some of the critics. >> are we ready for the exit question? here it comes. >> you should ignore insults and do what is in our national interest, which is a deal. >> that's what you better deal.
6:56 am
>> this is cover for rohan. >> cover with revolutionary guard. >> don't take the bait from the old guard. keep pressing ahead. sticks and stones. work out the deal and avoid a war. >> if we can work out the right deal, exactly. >> do you think we will? >> i do not. >> i do. we'll be back with predictions.

peace talks with palestinians collapse. >> democratic rule change on filibuster gives the president three years to judges in place. republicans could have changed the rule anyway. >> farm bill will not be passed. they can not come to an agreement on food stamps. >> to the extent congressional approval is necessary for agreements with iran. >> republicans will win the senate next year 2014. happy thanksgiving. gobble gobble.
