welcome to wusa9. today is friday, january 3, 2014. i'm andrea roane. it is a one-two punch from mother nature. the snow is over. it's a beautiful winter wonderland outside but what's left behind, bitter cold temperatures and whipping winds. >> she's andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. thanks for joining us. beverly farmer will have traffic, what little çtraffic there is. hopefully it will stay that way for a little while and we have howard in. welcome back. >> happy new year. plenty to talk about. 2 to 5 inches of snow yesterday afternoon and evening. a couple of flurries, patchy light snow still but the storm is quickly exiting. as far as any more accumulation, that's pretty much over w. the problem will be the blowing snow which you may see a clear area get recovered again as the winds are gusting in spots over 40 miles an hour. we're looking at sunny skies today. temperatures are not going to move much, back to maybe 24 degrees this afternoon. that's in d.c. north of town closer to 20. a frigid day and those wind

chills in spots are going to dip below zero. there goes the storm exiting to the east. we're looking at areas, some parts six inches. a foot or more across parts of new england from this but everything is quickly racing east now. the delmarva looking at snow. there were five-inch snow reports even in annapolis from this. 4 inches or so in kensington. 5 in damascus. western loudoun had 3 to 5. a little bit of light snow left over. there's a snow shower from prince william to charles county, montgomery county into eastern fairfax. a little bands here from around central howard right through western prince george's county. coming right there to about laurel a little bit of snow we're still dealing with but that is exiting quickly. temperatures will be calming quickly. hagerstown down to 16. five in oakland. 1 below in davis, west virginia. that's about 4,000 feet. look at the winds gust 4-g 1 at

reagan national last check. 35 martinsburg. manassas and andrews gusting in the 30s. when you look the at wind chills, now we're talking about some serious cold. single digits to below zero wind chills. hagerstown at minus one. we're sitting at 8 with the windchill here in d.c. temperatures this afternoon recovering not much. we're going to look at them while they're recovering into the upper teens to mid-20s. till noon north and west of town we have a windchill advisory and wind advisory as well. we could have gusts 40, if not close to 50 miles an hour through midday. back in a few minutes with your seven-day. we check in with beverly farmer. my drive in wasn't too bad once i got to the interstate. >> yes, exactly. even some of the major corridors, secondary roadways, snowing blowing right back on the roadways that have been cleared. so that's going to be an issue we deal with throughout the day. right now if you're making the trip along the interstates, we had a longstanding issue on the outer loop of the beltway at route 7 in which one of the work crew trucks hit the
4:05 am
overpass at oak street. on the outer loop police tell us all lanes have been reopened. as a general rule, parkways and secondary roadways, what you want to avoid or be extra cautious, there's a tree down waterside drive, massachusetts avenue. on the bw parkway a new crash reported near 198 and we've had reports on the bw park i in the laurel area of trees coming down. as far as the 95 corridor is concerned, virginia no early issues or incidents. 66 likewise. as we mentioned secondary roadways, like route 7 in tysons, 123 and your neighborhood streets, even worse conditions to deal with. any steep upgrade hill is going to be more of a problem for you too. you need to use the lower gears and allow the extra time you need. clear off your car completely, headlights, roof, everything so we can see you, see your lights and so you don't smack somebody in the windshield with snow off your roof. that is a look at your drive. we'll be back with more. >> thank you, beverly. even though we're on the

southern edge of the storm, the farther north you go and some cases the farther west and east you go, you're really going to feel the difference. >> absolutely. it made its mark. delia goncalves is out in sterming, virginia, to see what the outlying areas are dealing with -- sterling, virginia, to see what the outlying areas are dealing with this morning. you're all bundled up. >> reporter: it's a brisk with the wind gusting blowing through the area. anyone who has to be out today should certainly be prepared. as you mentioned a winter wonderland. i stepped out of my door this morning preparing to go to work. my neighborhood looked absolutely breathtaking and then i drove. driving through the city want bad but driving here to sterling and to loudoun county area, a little tricky because of these wind gusts blowing the snow from nearby trees into your windshield causing visibility issues. and so here we are just on the back end of dulles town center mall. we're nestled in this
4:07 am
neighborhood here near city center boulevard and mirage way. let's take a look the at the road here. you can see it had been treated but it's been a while since it was treated. underneath this light coating of snow, there is some thick ice. although we have seen just about one or two cars driving in the last five, ten minutes since we've been here, they are moving very slow because of this israel packed down. and we can see a plow truck coming down city center boulevard. city center boulevard, main thoroughfare, that's looking a bit better. we're down to the pavement just a bi. however, as we mention -- a bit. however, as we mentioned, there are still wind issues and then of course continued freezing. and so when you're driving on these roads, even though we see plows, even though you see a bit of pavement, don't be surprised if you run into any slick spots. so certainly it should be very slow going on the roads today. we pulled off route 7 to come
4:08 am
down into this neighborhood. route 7 looks pretty good. but as i mentioned, andrea and mike, when we were driving down to the area, these wind gusts just whipping down and really pushing a lot of snow into your windshield, that is causing major visibility issues. like beverly farmer just said, clean off the snow from your car because not only will that be a paz discard but all the snow blowing from the nearby trees a hazard as well in regards to driving this early morning. we'll continue to stay out here and bring you some more sights and sounds and scenes here in loudoun county. back to you. >> delia goncalves live in loudoun county where it's really cold. as mike said earlier, we were on the southern tip of the storm. to the north along the i-95 corridor, new york and boston they really got walloped. northeastern states overnight and moving into the area this morning, look at these blizzard conditions.
4:09 am
>> the wind is something else already. some of the areas are seeing over a foot of snow. the farther north of boston you go, there's up to 2 feet in some places. the national weather service did issue a blizzard warning and coastal flood warning. cape cod is supposed to get whacked today, too. maine is going to have some issues. residents say you know what? we've dealt with this before so it's not that big of a deal. >> yeah, i've definitely seen a storm like n. i've seen worse than this before. it's not that bad but it messes up the city. a lot of transportation has to get through and all the snow messes it up. but we have to keep buildings clean so nobody will fall, keep anything in order. >> we're not alone in our pain. the national weather service is reporting almost one-third of the u.s. population was in the path of this storm. it is 4:08. ahead of wusa9, a warning for your morning commute. >> there's plenty to worry about on the roads and goodness, if you're trying to fly somewhere today, chances

through midday. as we look at the forecast sunny. i have windy and cold in bold letters because i can't fit "windy and cold." gusts at times through midday topping 40, maybe close to 50 miles an hour. back with your weekend forecast in just a few. right now the best opportunity, your best option i should say is to not be on the roadway if you can help it. that would be the best bet for folks to clear the roadways. major arteries like i-270, you can see you're down to ç pavement. thru lanes are open. it's the shoulders where the slush collects and the off and on ramps. no early issues to report on
4:14 am
the 270 corridor in either direction between frederick and the beltway as far as any obstacle in your path. montgomery county beltway, a crash right before the american legion bridge. also a crash in tysons on the outer loop of the beltway near route 7. bw parkway had numerous reports of trees down in the laurel area, including an accident northbound they were looking for near route 198, rock creek parkway. had a problem with a tree down near massachusetts avenue and waterside drive, just an example of what you'll be dealing with here. i-66 corridor virginia, 95 corridor in virginia and in maryland for that matter, no current incidents to report. varying conditions certainly coming out of your neighborhoods and even on the interstates to be cautious about. looks mostly wet here the pavement in springfield. 395 corridor. but again coming out of the neighborhoods and even on the secondary roadways, big potential for some ice pack or refreezing going on. so that's our biggest caution for you this morning. if we can stay home and wait it out, that would be the best bet. back to you, mike and andrea.
4:15 am
>> we cannot stress enough black ice, slick roads, poor visibility. police say chemical used to prevent ice actually quits when the temperatures drop too low. it depends on what they use. check out the backup on the right there. look at that. traffic officials want to remind drivers to slow down and stay four car distances away from you and the car in front of you. >> if you do have to go out, you can check the traffic. we have a new traffic feature on our wusa9 website. go to that and plot your route into work this morning. it's a really great feature that we just introduced in time for the bad weather. a worker doing his job trying to prevent such accidents died yesterday as he was preparing to deice streets in pennsylvania. that man was trapped in a pile of rock salt near the landfill
4:16 am
in bucks county. the mound of salt was said to be about 100 feet high. there's no word how the worker became trapped. the roads and traffic are sure to be a mess this morning as things progress. of course we're going to bring you up to-minute reports right here on your commute on television. download the app, wusa9. it is free. we have a great traffic feature on there. it's interactive. you can look at your route right down to your street and the weather app you know about is fantastic. ahead on wusa9, a new study out this morning revealing a lot about medicaid expansion and whether people will take full advantage. >> howard's first alert forecast. of course he's going to timeline everything for you. most of the know is gone. the wind and the temperat

they got hammered. the ski areas will be in good shape the next few days. they'll be making snow but it will be blowing in many areas as we're talking about winds today gusting 40 plus through midday. temperatures barely 24, 25. that's reagan national. north and west of town, upper teens and low 20s. that's it. that doesn't even factor in the windchill which will be mainly in the single digits. there goes our storm quickly moving to the east. you can see these darker blues now going to the east. even across parts of the eastern shore. they got 5 inches plus there. philly 6 to 10. now we're talking long island to areas in southeastern new england, boy, they got hammered. a foot plus in many areas. long island maybe not that much. we have a little bit of snow left over. we're showing you this here. you get west of fairfax, we're done with it but we are looking at the snow showers continuing on the back side from westminster down through much of howard county. mostly eastern montgomery county. a little sliver here west of

somebody else has left, even on some of the secondary roadways not fully cleared. the big potential for the snow to keep blowing back on the road surfaces or a refreezing effect with the high winds. look at the winds kicking the camera around here in springfield. no interstate issues to report on the virginia side of 95. 395 thru lanes reported open. on and off ramps tricky. any incline tough to negotiate. the trick is certainly not step on the gas but go into the lower gears. that will help you up the inclines and through the icy conditions. if you're headed along the virginia beltway and the 66 corridor, the greenway, the toll road, no issues. i'd avoid things like the gw parkway, the baltimore- washington parkway, rock creek parkway because we've had more problems with accidents. with the tree cover there's been trees coming down as we've heard on the parkway near 198 and northbound on the parkway at powder mill road there was a crash along the ride side. -- right side. this is georgia avenue not fully cleared. this is a state route. there's also a crash on the southbound side of georgia avenue.
