he tells me every time he brings him outside, with the exception of right now for the interview, they always put booties on him. tell me about the booties, why they are important. >> the booties are actually to help protect their paws from the salt. lot of times when the salt gets out here, it gets up inside their paws and they are sensitive. walking him around, you can actually see after a block or two, he starts picking his paws up like he's on a hot plate. >> reporter: it's important to keep that in mind and to protect your dogs, both on their feet and of course on their bodies. it's important to put sweaters on. even big dogs like this who have a little coat. we spoke to a veterinary expert earlier today. she showed us her dogs. take a look at this video. her dog is a bit smaller. she said she always makes sure to put a coat on her dog when she takes him out because he is smaller. he does actually shake. i don't know if you can see him in the video. he shakes when he goes outside. something good to keep in mind when you take your dogs outside, no matter how big or

my dad has aor afib.brillation, he has the most common kind... ...it's not caused by a heart valve problem. dad, it says your afib puts you at 5 times greater risk of a stroke. that's why i take my warfarin every day. but it looks like maybe we should ask your doctor about pradaxa. in a clinical trial, pradaxa® (dabigatran etexilate mesylate)... ...was proven superior to warfarin at reducing the risk of stroke. and unlike warfarin, with no regular blood tests or dietary restrictions. hey thanks for calling my doctor. sure. pradaxa is not for people with artificial heart valves. don't stop taking pradaxa without talking to your doctor. stopping increases your risk of stroke. ask your doctor if you need to stop pradaxa before surgery or a medical or dental procedure. pradaxa can cause serious, sometimes fatal, bleeding. don't take pradaxa if you have abnormal bleeding or have had a heart valve replaced. seek immediate medical care for unexpected signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. pradaxa may increase your bleeding risk

if you're 75 or older, have a bleeding condition or stomach ulcer, take aspirin, nsaids, or blood thinners... ...or if you have kidney problems, especially if you take certain medicines. tell your doctors about all medicines you take. pradaxa side effects include indigestion, stomach pain, upset, or burning. if you or someone you love has afib not caused by a heart valve problem... ...ask your doctor about reducing the risk of stroke with pra.daxa

to eat only at mcdonald's for 90 days to see what it would do to his health. the results turned out to be a good lesson for him and his students. >> reporter: which picture of this man was taken after he had eaten nothing but mcdonald's for 90 days? >> the average joe would say, well, it would be that guy on the right. that's what's so amazing about this experiment. i can eat any food at mcdonald's that i want, as long as i'm smart with the rest of the day in what i balance it out with. >> reporter: that was the theory science teacher john cisna laid out for his students this past fall. 90 days of mcdonald's for breakfast, lunch and dinner. but with strict daily nutritional limitations of 2000 calories and trying to stay close to the recommended dietary allowances for nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fat calories, cholesterol. cisna approached the owner of the local mcdonald's franchise about the idea and the owner was so interested in the results, he agreed to provide those 90 days of meals to cisna
6:45 pm
at no charge. >> i thought it was kind of crazy. >> reporter: cisna's students used mcdonald's online nutritional information to construct daily meals for their teacher, making sure to follow nutritional limitations he had set. >> typical breakfast would be two egg white delights, bowl of their maple oatmeal, and 1% milk. >> reporter: salad for lunch would be followed by a more traditional value meal at dinner. >> this isn't something to say, well, he only went to mcdonald's and ate salads. huh you. i had the big macs, quarter pounders with cheese, sundaes, ice cream cones. >> reporter: he turned the experiment into a mini documentary. he also started walking 45 minutes a day. >> my mind says yes, my body says holy buckets, batman. >> reporter: at the end of 90 days, he lost 37 pounds and his cholesterol dropped from 249 to 170. >> wow, that was a difference. >> i tell people not only can i see my shoes now, but i can tie
6:46 pm
them. >> reporter: the moral of this lesson isn't to eat more at mcdonald's, but to pay attention to your daily nutrition. >> the point behind this documentary is that it's choice. we all have choices. it's our choices that make us fat, not mcdonald's. some people weren't bothered by today's frigid temperatures. we caught up with the young and the young at heart sledding on the hill in northwest washington. others were lacing up and hitting the ice for some skating near the national mall. good stuff. good exercise. i want to go back to the mcdonald's guy. you can eat healthy at mcdonald's? >> yeah, i guess that's the bottom line. he had the big mac and also had the maple oatmeal. you have to establish that balance. >> you work out a lot. that's what we say about people who like the southern cuisine, the soul feed. you can eat healthy. >> there are ways to get it done. >> how about the weather? >> speaking of the weather
6:47 pm
outside, i went for a run today. it was rough. it wasn't brutally cold, but a lot of people didn't shovel their sidewalks, so i had compacted ice to run on. those icy spots will only get more numerous through the next 48 hours. let's start off with a look at the weather cam over the national harbor. not bad right now. 303 degrees, winds out of the south at 9 miles per hour. we did have a bit of a windchill factor during the day today, just as predicted. if you were tuned in last night, i told you it would just be blustery today, not as biting as it was on friday. now we have another weather issue to talk about, a freezing rain advisory is in effect for all the pink highlighted counties from 6:00 a.m. till noon tomorrow. it is because of a stream of moisture that's heading our way and it's going to fall on top of the snow that we already have in place. so right now, we have those clouds in place basically south to north. they are going to increase as we head through the overnight hours. just a few clouds right now,
6:48 pm
but increasing into the overnight. the rain approaching from the south as well, and that will move in on top of the snow. then it will freeze and we could have some areas of just slush, but it does look that everything will freeze up again as we head into sunday night and monday morning and that will lead to some black ice situations, so both sunday and monday are yellow alert days in the first alert weather center. it's below freezing in frederick and leesburg, 28 degrees. 32 in culpepper and orange, so right at the freezing mark in both locations. but it's 26 in hagerstown, 25 in manassas. we do have cold temperatures out there. on satellite and radar, you can see there's a little bit of cloud cover approaching from the north and west, but missing us to the north. it's the cloud cover approaching from the south that we'll really keep an eye on, because that's where the stream of moisture is coming from. on 9 future cast by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, a few showers starting to pop into fredericksburg, but nothing in
6:49 pm
the beltway yet. by noon, you can see there's the potential for plenty of steady rain throughout i-95 and the beltway, basically from philadelphia all the way down to charlottesville, have the rain falling. and this is the focus of the freezing rain advisory for that reason. the moisture will be pretty significant until we get into the late evening hours, when it's going to taper off. as you're sitting down to dinner on sunday night, it's still going to be falling, though it will start to get lighter. then the next threat comes. a cold front, you can see it slicing down here, with the blue on the back side of this system, indicating snow. but that moves through during the overnight from sunday into monday. then monday afternoon we'll be clearing again. by noon, already seeing a return of the sunshine. then it's going to get just downright frigid. i use the phrase "freezing rain" a couple times today. it's not the same thing as sleet. sleet is when rain drops freeze before they hit the ground.
6:50 pm
you'll see them bouncing off the windshield. freezing rain falls all the way to the ground as liquid and then it becomes ice. that's why freezing rain is so dangerous. now, overnight tonight, we'll see an increase in cloud cover, not as cold, 20 to 28, with winds out of the south- southeast at 5 to 10 miles per hour. tomorrow, because of those warmer temperatures and a little bit of melting with the rain showers, i think we will see the freezing rain, but also a little bit of fog developing. temperatures in the 20s and 30s early in the morning on sunday and then in the afternoon, lot of cloud cover still in place, lot more rain showers, and a little bit milder. still looking at the potential for fog, high of 39 to 45. that's the warmest day in our forecast. on monday, another yellow alert day because of the black ice in the morning and then turning windy and much colder in the afternoon. that high of 38, that's early in the day. temperatures really falling off as we head into the evening and
6:51 pm
the overnight low, 8 degrees. that is not a mistype. that's what we're expecting for the overnight low and only rebounding to 18 on tuesday. it is going to be bitterly cold out there. in fact, if we only reach that high of 18, that will be the coldest high temperature in five years. in the first alert seven-day forecast, only getting back up into the upper 30s by thursday, with a chance for another rain or snow shower. so it's a really cold just kind of january-feeling forecast, isn't it? >> and the reaction from the floor over here, 18! are you kidding me! >> not liking that. >> i'm from pennsylvania and i'm saying are you kidding me! >> layer up, layer up, that's the key. >> redskins, huh? >> redskins adding more names to their interview list, going to the college level now for their next head coach. i've got the latest candidates, coming up. >> plus, on the hardwood, big wins for the local programs. it's all next

. the washington redskins are leaving no stone unturned. they have now turned their coaching search attention to the college level. it's been reported tonight the team has requested to meet with vanderbilt head coach james franklin. you may remember he was the coach in waiting at the university of maryland. on the pro level, the team will meet with ravens offensive coordinator jim caldwell tomorrow. obviously, they want to make absolutely sure they get the right guy, but now they have some more competition out there. the tennessee titans became the latest team searching for a head coach, parting ways with mike mostly sunny chack, after three seasons at the helm. after finishing 7-9, the team offered him a chance come back, with conditions, however, but he decided to go in a different direction. here's the aforementioned james franklin, coaching what could be his final game with the commodores, taking on houston in the compass bowl. robin net finds a wide-open

jordan matthews for the score. 24-0 commodores at the half. houston came back to tie it up, but vande off the wildcat wins the compass bowl. towson against north dakota state, last play of the first quarter, terrence west finds the end zone for towson to tie the game at 7-7. but it was all bison after that. rock jenson on the qb keeper, north dakota state wins big, 35- 7, winning their third straight national championship. but of course a big shoutout to the towson tying force making it all the way. on the hardwood today, marking the 100th meeting between georgetown and st. johns, quickly became obvious georgetown would walk away with the victory. but just how bad would it be? the largest margin of victory in this series was in 1920, when the hoyas won by 36. today, they flirted with that number. up 12 in the first, smith-

rivera with the block, and the bucket and the extra point. hoyas continue their hot shooting. smith-rivera from long range, had 31 points on the day, 20 of them in the first half. in the second, hoyas up 29. hopkins finds joshua smith for the dunk. georgetown led by as much as 33 at one point. starkes, the only other hoya in double digits. georgetown rolls 77-60, the final. to a game with an almost identical score, maryland hosting georgia tech, get to that game, there we go. terps and things up early with a nasty dunk from dez wells, 11 points on the day. then to close out the first half, second leading scorer. terps get the generous bounce, led by 14 at one point. the guy with the hot hand today, nick faust led all scorers with 16. in all, maryland had 16 assists, six turnovers to beat

the yellowjackets 07-61. >> but for the most part, shot selection was better, shot a few shots that led to layups for them, but our passing was better and our guys were looking for each other. you know, just having more offensive players on the floor makes us pretty hard to guard. >> coming back from christmas break, we wanted to think of it as kind of a fresh start. we have really been playing tough on d. i think that kind of spurs our offense a little bit. florida state hosting virginia, cavaliers jumping out to an early lead. darian atkins finds mitchell down the court for the dunk to put virginia up by 11. florida state, having a hard time hanging on to the ball today. took a 20-point lead at one point and now lead by 16 points. west virginia in their big 12 opener against tcu, aaron harris wide open in the corner, hits three of his 22 to lead the mountaineers. then less than two minutes to go, wdu up two. state inn drives for two his
6:59 pm
15. west virginia wins 74-69. lots of great action today. at least the local teams doing pretty well. >> you throw out all the names, the guys, do you think fans really care that there is a guy, the right guy, or just get somebody in there and let's get started ? forget about last season. >> no, i think they are kind of fed up with let's get a guy in and get started. they want somebody -- the majority from what i hear want that fresh face, want the, you know, somebody that's not old and tried and true in the nfl. they want a new fresh aura into the locker room. but i think because we've gone through so many coaches in the past few years, fans want to make sure they get it right so they don't go through the debacle we've gone through. >> i don't think fans are confident they will get it right. >> no, no. confidence is very low. >> okay. all right. so there's that freezing rain advisory in effect for basically everyone north and west of the district until you get to the blue ridge there. and that's in effect from 6:00 a.m.
