and how the super bowl player is responding to his critics. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for this thursday, january 23rd, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the aftermath of that massive winter storm that stretched from kentucky to new england. in its wake the storm leaves a bitterly cold layer of weather that stretches from north to south. this morning there are freeze and winter weather warnings from texas to ora. now, during the height of the storm, the wind-driven snow blew into and through this amtrak train in baltimore. it looked like a blizzard inside the passenger cars. besides massive travel delays, the storm and bitter cold is driving up the cost of natural gas and propane. and at the sight of the super bowl, metlife stadium in new jersey, a dress rehearsal of sorts. so 1,300 workers cleared the

snow. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says the brutally cold weather is not going away anytime soon. >> a storm has come to a close with impressive totals especially in the meg lop lus. around boston, a foot and a half of snow came down. 11 inches in new york city. that was a daily snowfall record. in philadelphia, over a foot of snow, but it's the first time they've seen over a foot before february 1st. it's never happened in philadelphia before. 4 inches in d.c. now it's about t many, many states with two dozen windchills and advisories as far as arkansas, tennessee, and north carolina, and freezes in effect. subzero in boston, near zero in new york and 30 and 40 below across the upper midwest, chicago and minneapolis. even a chill of 14 far south into atlanta. now, here's app upside-down kind of forecast for you.

in juneau, alaska, temperatures in the 40s for the next few days. big ridge of warmth on the west coast. colder weather in atlanta, georgia. things looking wilder. this pattern is going to continue as we look ahead. more outbreaks of cold. another big one arrives as we head into next week. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. meanwhile california is suffering with what may be its worst drought in history. the water shortage is affecting agriculture and business. a statewide state of emergency has been declared and governor jerry brown has asked everyone to reduce their water consumption by 20%. israel says it's broken up an al qaeda blot in tel aviv. this appears that al qaeda leaders were directly involved in plotting an attack inside isra israel. besides that, they plan to

attack a jerusalem conference center with guns and kill rescue workers with a truck bomb. secret service said the plan was in the advanced stage. three palestinians who planned the attack have been arrested. former nsa contractor edward snowden is answering questions online today. he remains in russia where he was granted asylum but snowden denies he was working for the russians when he released those surveillance records. a just repoleased poll finds 58 don't believe it and 47% believe it's necessary in order to stop terror attacks. marlie hall is here in new york. good morning, marlie. >> good morning, anne-marie. snowden will almost certainly address questions about the top secret information he's revealed so far.

edward snowden will answer questions from the public online today about his role in exposing secret u.s. surveillance programs. one question u.s. officials want to know is how much help did he receive from foreign intelligence sources. >> my questions about his work with chinese and russian intelligence begin once he arrived in hong kong and then when he moved on to moscow. >> wednesday snowden denied he had any help telling the "new yorker" magazine the claims are absurd. a cbs news poll shows 61% polled think snowden should stand trial for espionage. 23% think he should be granted amnesty, but as the white house reiterated yesterday, that's not likely to happen. >> it is our firm position he ought to return to the united states and face the charges against him. >> but the snowden leaks have forced changes to the way the nsa operates. last week president obama announced the nsa will still

collect americans' phone data in the fight against terror, but the president said agents will now need a judge's approval access it and he no longer wants the agency to store the information. the president says he's trying to balance the need for intelligence while still upholding american civil li liberties. snow extend is expected to answer questions on a live chat this afternoon o an website free snowden. you can submit questions via twitter using #asksnowden. opposition leaders in ukraine issued an ultimatum. they want the president to call early elections within 24 hours or face more protests. the demand comes amid escalating violence in the capital. at least two protesters have died since the demonstrations began in november. that's when ukraine's president sided with russia and rejected an economic deal with the

european union. at the syrian peace talks in switzerland, the two warring factions are expected to meet separately with the u.n. negotiator. it's still unclear if the two sides are expected to meet tomorrow when serious negotiations are to begin. at the opening session yesterday they called on assad to step down. the president said that's not happening. president obama has created a task force to respond to sexual assault on american college campuses. the white house released a report yesterday that found one out of five female students is assaults but just one in eight victims reports it. president obama said sexual assault is an affront to basic humanity. >> sexual violence is more than just a crime against individuals. it threatens our families, it threatens or communities. ultimately it threatens our entire country. >> the report says sex assaults

bubbles causing them to burst at the surface. nearly a dozen strong earthquakes have been witnessed in the last 24 hours. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, job cuts at target, and a raiders cheerleader cries unfair play. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. target is laying off 7,500 workers. they say it's not connected to the data breach affecting up to 110 million customers. it will stop offering health insurance to part-time employees on april 1st. asian stocks were low. tokyo's nikkei lost nearly 1%. hong kong's hang seng fell 1.5%. stocks ended mixed on wall street with earnings reports from some tech giants' disappointing investors. the dow tumbled 41 points while

the nasdaq gained 17. netflix waited until after the markets closed to release its earnings. the video service added 2.3 million subscribers and arounded 48 million in the last quarter. that's up from just 8 million during the same period in 2012. revenue surged 24% from 2012 to almost 1.2 billion. activist investor carl icahn tweeted he scooped up stock. he boosted his holdings to more than $3 billion. he also blasted apple's board saying the company's doing its shareholders a disservice by not significantly increasing its stock buyback. bernie madoff, the man who orchestrated a multi-million-dollar mortgage scheme suffered a heart attack in prison. he e-mailed the network to say he was hospitalized land month but is back serving his 150-year

atlanta and st. louis. morning snow in denver and morning fog in seattle. two sisters have a second shot at life thanks to rare transplant. they both now share lungs from the same donor. omar via franco reports. >> reporter: they're sisters but have two different personalities. >> i think i'm more mellow. >> reporter: in the last two years both sisters started to develop breathing problems. >> i started to cough every time i coughed, every time i laughed. >> reporter: doctors told them they needed lung transplants so the sisters moved from santa barbara, california, to houston, texas, and waited for donors. >> the truth is they wouldn't have made it the next 60 or 90 days. >> reporter: like all siblings, they argued who should get the

lungs first. >> it was painful to watch her cough. i could live with the coughing but she couldn't live without the oxygen. >> reporter: but earlier this month came a match for both anna ander ma. each sister would get one lung from the same donor. it was the first time houston methodist hospital performs such a surgery. before the surgery anna was always coughing ander ma couldn't even make it from her bed to the bathroom without losing her breath. now both sisters are able to do something they love. for thousands of youngsters in our area for a couple of days. i'm andrea roane. parents are breathing a sigh of relief, three, four days inside especially when they're little. my wife is like, go to school. >> that's what you call cab din fever big time. >> young philip is ready to be back, i'm sure. >> young fella's mom is ready for him to be back. >> we are looking forward to a couple of flakes today in the form of some flurries and snow showers. shouldn't amount to much. we'll get out of the teens. yesterday we did not do that. set record high lows for the coldest high temperatures as all the airports in baltimore washington, 19 and 15 yesterday. today we'll make it to the mid 20s. some passing flurries and snow showers. those winds, a little bit of a windchill out of the southwest and then west and northwest as the day progresses with this

little disturbance pushing through at 10 to 15 miles per hour. temperatures this morning actually in the negative range in martinsburg at 2 below. zero in davis. 5 in frederick. slightly milder temperatures, still very cold down south, low to mid-teens in many areas. not much wind thankfully. our windchill pretty close to the temperature here. you'll notice the same windchill and temperature in martinsburg 53 below in hagerstown. some of the winds in the mountains close to 15 below in davis. just a few snow showers now. you see them near pittsburgh and moving from ohio into west virginia. let's send it over to monika samtani. she has your first look at timesaver traffic. >> commuters, we can breathe the sigh of relief. it's so different. the road conditions are really, really good. i did not see any icy patches on my ride in although you might find them in fauquier and loudoun counties. that's what i've heard but closer into the district, i think you're going to be just fine. look at all the green behind me, so welcome this morning.

if you're planning to head in from frederick, no issues to report coming in all the way down toward clarksburg and germantown and down to the point where the lanes divide. the beltway in prince george's county near route 50, we're in great shape. end to end the lanes are open. let's go back over to the naps and this time to virginia. on the northbound side of i-95, no delays early this morning and no problems dale city to springfield. overnight we were clear. we'll take a live look in springfield on the northbound side of 95. a few people out. i think people still want to get a bit of an early start this morning but you will be fine. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. a low of kids are getting another snow day. among them fairfax, loudoun, prince william, culpeper and fauquier counties virginia all have canceled classes today. staff forward, -- stafford, spotsylvania and manassas park schools as well. >> in maryland calvert county schools announced they're closed as well but a lot of schools are also delayed and

you can see them at the bottom of our screen or check out our new and improved easy website wusa9.com. great alphabetical listing of all the schools. you can go right to your school. if you're a parent, you're probably wondering if your children's school has used up all of its snow days. the answer is some have. here are some of the counties. anne arundel has used all four. prince george's has maxed out at 4. fairfax is at 5. d.c. public schools have only used 3. school officials say if they do have to take more snow days, they'll be made up throughout the school year. if you've been outside, you know how dangerous it is and hospitals across the region are reporting an uptick in patients with hypothermia, broken bones, even heart attacks. doctors say people are slipping on icy sidewalks, getting into more accidents and overexerpting themselves --

overexerting themselves while shoveling the snow. they say if you don't have to go out, don't. but if you do have to go out which is for most of us, dress warmly and keep a blanket, munchies and water in your car. a late night officer- involved shoulding ends up in a gun battle in northeast d.c. police say it all started at a liquor store, a robbery in forestville and the whole thing casy lated from there. prince george's county police vee liquor store, chased the suspect into the district. that's when the suspects crashed their minivan and then bullets started flying. no officers were hurt but one of the suspects was hit in the groin. at this point investigators don't know whether or not he was shot by an officer or actually shot himself. he was taken to the hospital and a second suspect was also taken into custody. a judge has denied a request to delay the arraignment of former virginia governor bob mcdonnell and his wife maureen. the due are -- two are due in court tomorrow morning
