( announcer speaks ) a message from the foundation for a better life. record-setting cold air is making its way from the midwest to the gulf coast. the deep freeze will make it feel like 40 below zero in some areas. a caribbean cruise is cut short after hundreds of passengers fall ill. and daft punk gets lucky at the grammy awards. ♪ captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, january 27th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, it's already one of the coldest winters on record, and this morning another bitter and dangerous blast of arctic air is

causing temperatures to plummet from the upper midwest all the way to the gulf coast. there are blizzard warnings in minnesota, south dakota, and iowa. by late yesterday, there were whiteout conditions in some areas, making travlt treacherous. most schools in minnesota are closed today as are the chicago schools. the windchill there could reach 40 below today. and the cold and snow caused multiple crashes in michigan. the national weather service said most of the midwest will feel colder than barrow, alaska, today. eric fisher, chief meteorologist at our boston station wbz told jeff glor the cold will extend from north to south. >> unbelievable cold. a lot of wind. not a lot of falling snow with that blizzard warning. it's in red on the map. gusts of 50 miles per hour. lots of snowing and drifting snow and windchills as cold as 50 below zero. that gets into life-threatening territory. a time we have to stay indoors as much as possible. timing out some of the

temperatures, feel like 20 below in chicago, 43 below zero in fargo, it's feeling unrelenting. feeling like 10 in nashville and 15 in little rock. >> we're looking at the prospect of snow in new orleans. >> it sounds crazy, but it's true. right on down from the water to southeast texas clear over to north carolina. not just snow but freezing rain and sleet. as we head into tuesday morning, we time this out in the i-10 corridor. you notice down to the gulf of mexico itself stretching across georgia and into south and north carolina. and on wednesday morning this will wrap up and move off to the east. pretty significant totals when you consider where there is falling. 1 to 3 inches. it's going to be accompanied by sleet and freezing rain and this is the area to watch. north carolina and south carolina. if this trend as little farther west, we could talk big totals for places that don't often deal with it. i'm meteorologist arab fisher for cbs news. >> well, a cruise ship has cut

short its ten-day caribbean trip and has headed back to new jersey after several passengers became sick. federal health officials boarding the ship in the virgin islands trying to determine the cause of the outbreak. >> one tweeted. all about the fun ship, she said. yep, i'm sick. the explorer of the cruise ship had to make an emergency stop yesterday after reports of vomiting and diarrhea from passengers. according to the cdc, nearly 300 of the ship's 3,000 passengers and about 20 crew members became ill. dr. william schaffner of vanderbilt's medical school says it appears to be norovirus. >> passengers can bring this virus onboard. it's so highly transmittable that it spreads from person to person in this confined population that interacts so closely. >> norovirus is fairly common, but this incident comes at a

time when there's been increased attention on the cruise ship industry. they made headlines when a ship lost power and were stranded for 42 days. in a statement royal caribbean said during the sailing explorer of the seas has experienced an elevated number of persons with a gastrointest gnat illness. that was effective was over-the-count over-the-counter-medication aboard the ship. they have sent a health officer to the ship to figure out the cause of the illnesses. for now royal caribbean plans to use special cleaning products to kill norovirus for the rest of the virus. terrell brown, cbs news, new york. police are trying to determine why a teenager shout and killed two people at a columbia, maryland, shopping mall southwest of baltimore. it opens for the first time since the weekend attack. susan mcginnis is there with the latest. susan, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. there will be a strong police presence here when the mall reopens at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. a motive for this crime continues to baffle police. they're still trying to figure out why this 19-year-old arrived here by taxi at 10:15, saturday morning, waited an hour, and started shooting. the mall in columbia will be back open for business this afternoon two days after a shooting left two people dead including the suspected gunmen. >> nothing ee going to go back to normal. we always understand that. our job is to make sure this cornerstone of our community is open as soon as possible. >> police say 19-year-old derri derrion aguilar came in and killed brianna benlolo and tyler

johnson. >> reporter: police still don't know the connection between the shooter and the victim. they still don't know what drove him to buy a gun and open fire in this mall. police searched this home where aguilar lived with his mother. they recovered more ammunition and evidence including a journal he kept. >> he expresses general unhappiness with his life. >> reporter: aguilar's mother told a baltimore radio station she can't figure it out. she said he was a gentle boy. neighbors are shocked. >> i started shaking for one thing. it's so sad. >> reporter: police don't think aguilar had any previous run-ins with the law. now, when the mall reopens at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon people will be able to sign memory books and float fountains for the victims.

zumiz will reopen. his advisers say mr. obama is prepared to take unilateral action between rich and poor if necessary. alex burns of politico says this will likely be a speech of contrasts. >> democrats are expecting barack obama to use this speech to set up the big differences between the two parties heading. what they view as sort of robust executive energy, focused on issues of economic fairness and income and equality versus a very slow moving gridlocked republican caucus. >> following his speech the president will travel to maryland, pennsylvania, wisconsin, and tennessee to promote his proposals. and the family of marlise munoz is prepared her funeral after she was taken off life support at a texas hospital. munoz who was pregnant was declared pregnant in november after her husband found her unconscious at home.

the hospital kept her on life support for the sake of her fetus. her husband sued the hospital and friday a judge ruled in his favor. she e with us removed from life support yesterday and allowed to die. >> this is the decision we sought. there's nothing happy about today. this was a sad situation all the way around. >> her husband says he wants to move on caring for their young son. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, stock market plunge, and new m edward snowden. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. investors are bracing for what could be another rough week. last week several factors sent major wall street indices plunging, among them concerns about economic slowdowns abroad, especially in china, and weaker u.s. corporate earnings. another big selloff could happen this week when the fed meets and is likely to announce additional cuts to its stimulus program. as for the numbers, dow lost 318

points or 3.5% on friday closet at 315, 8 p 9. the nasdaq fell 9 points. stocks in asia saw a big selloff. tokyo's nikkei plunged 2.5%. hong kong's hang seng lost 2%. the national security agency may have done more than spying on individuals. it also may have conducted surveillance on foreign companies. former nsa contractor edward snowden made that claim during an interview with a german tv broadcaster. snowden said the spying was done even if it had nothing do with u.s. national security. the interview took place in russia where snowden has been granted temporary asylum. working age people now make up the majority of households that rely on food stamps. until recently, the main recipients were children and the elderly. a new federal study attributes the change to persistent high unemployment and stagnant wages.

one in seven americans receive food stamps. the justice department is reportedly considering civilian and criminal charges against several banks for failing to adequately monitor payday lenders. they say high interest internet payday lenders would be the biggest target of the crackdown. they get huge fees. and mailing a first class letter costs 49 cents. the price increase went up sunday. that's up 3 cents from before. forever stams are good but you had to be smart enough to buy them, anne-marie. >> you know what? if this means we get to keep our saturday delivery, i'm not going to complain too much about it. >> agreed. >> wendy gillette at the new york stock exchange. thank you, wendy. well, coming up on the "morning news," a fiery blass. a natural explosion of a natural gas pipeline in canada sends flames hundreds of feet into the air. this is the "cbs morning news."

♪ in winnipeg, canada, about 4,000 people are without heat today. a camera captured the fireball when a natural gas pipeline caused flames. residents will be without heat for at least several days and today's high is expected to be minus 9 degrees. a suspected u.s. drone fired on an alleged militant with ties to al qaeda and shah. 100 miles east of the capital of mogadishu. a military man and his driver were reportedly killed in the attack. in ukraine anti-government riots are spreading outside the capital. on sunday 3,000 people took to the streets hurling rocks at police. the latest round of protests

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new york can expect morning rain and snow showers. partly sunny in miami. snow flurries in chicago. 2 below zero. dallas will be partly sunny. so will l.a. in sports, the denver broncos and the seattle seahawks have arrived in new jersey for next sunday's super bowl. this is the first super bowl to be played outdoors in a cold weather city. both teams say they want to practice outdoors. and in the words of broncos' quarterback peyton manning, this is a big deal. in the nba, longtime celtics' paul pierce and kevin garnett return to boston as new jersey nets. pierce and garnet got a big hand from the fans and then they helped beat the boston celtics, 85-79. in miami, a rematch of last year's finals. chris bosh scored 24 points as the heatan h tdlehe a sanionton

and here's another look at this morning's top stories. another blast of dangerously cold weather is taking aim at the midwest. the near zero temperatures have forced some schools to cancel classes. and federal health officials have boarded the "colorer of the seas" cruise ship in the virgin islands. they're trying to determine how hundreds of passengers and crew became sick with a gastrointestinal illness. last night's 56th annual grammy awards here on cbs honored music legends and its brightest new stars. teri okita reports from downtown los angeles with the high leasts. >> reporter: daft punk won album of the year at the 56th annual grammy award. newcomer lorde who performed won best performer of the year. >> this is one thing i did not expect the most, so thank you so

angeles. well, it could be a bad omen for pope francis's call for peace in ukraine. on sunday a sea gul and a large black crow attacked two doves in front of the children standing by the pope. tens of thousands watched the fight in st. peter's square. both doves managed to get away but one did lose some feathers. surveillance video shows thieves crashing a stolen car through the store front. they quickly load up the weapons and take off. just moments later police arrive about, guns drawn, one officer is just 15 seconds away when he got the call. and the world's largest steam locomotive is now on a 1,200-mile journey to get the relic back on the tracks. this is the 600-on the locomotive known as big boy. as it chugged out of pomona, california, on sunday on its way to wyoming for its restoration. the locomotive began began its service in 19441 pulling heavy freight trains over the

30s and low 40s by 4:00, down to 32. mostly cloudy day with stray rain or snow shower back into the 20s by 58. we have had varying amounts of cloudiness this morning. where we have had more breaks, we are 18 degrees in martinsburg. 41 in la plata. big difference here, 54 peters during. wind chills, winds gusting over 30 miles per hour. we are going to get windy and cold. looking at the forecast highs. this is a little bit of a moving target on a day like today. upper 30s to low 40s. mid-30s up north. for the most part the beltway looks great early this monday morning.

good morning, everybody. we are in good shape on most of the beltway. crews have been dealing with a structure fire, i'm told that should be cleared up shortly at skyview drive, route 1 north of 235. dale city on woodbridge, 95 all green. we'll tall take a live look on springfield where the hov lanes are pretty much open now. coming up through dale city you should be fine. back over to the maps and the bw 2003 route 50, no issues to report as you come in from annapolis on 50. baltimore on i 99. we'll check out the beltway now, and here's what it looks like near route 50. good shape between 95 and the wilson bridge. there are no problems on 270, coming in from frederick. back to you guys. our top story this morning, the tragic columbia mall shooting. we are still trying to piece together some of the facts, but we don't know the motive behind what happened in columbia this

weekend. >> the gunfire erupted around 11:00 saturday morning and ended with three dead. a 21-year-old young mother and her 25-year-old coworker tyler johnson were killed inside a popular clothing store for skaters and snowboarders. >> police say this man was responsible. 19-year-old darren aguilar. he took his own life. >> andrew mccarron has more on the shooter's background. >> reporter: police say darren aguilar had no criminal history. but investigators had seized a personal journal from his home in college park, which may help answer the most troubling question. why? >> reporter: beyond darren ago already's smile in this driver's license photograph was a clearly troubled life. less than three hours after the bloodshed, aguilar's mother filed a missing person report on her son. investigators became concerned for the 19-year-old's safety after reading an entry from his

journal. >> there is a journal. he does express general unhappiness with his life. >> reporter: police pinged his cell phone, which revealed aguilar was inside the mall. only later did investigators determine the missing man and the shooter were the same person. police have not been able to establish anything for the known violence. >> no relationship between our shooter and our victims. >> reporter: in early december, aguilar purchased his pump action shot didn't legally -- shotgun legally at a licensed deal in rock hill. he apparently brought that, ammunition and crudely made explosive devices into the mall with a backpack. there was no answer at the home he shared with his mother. we have learned he graduated from blake high school in silver spring in 2013. last february he was accepted to montgomery coll
