good morning. welcome to w usa 9. today is wednesday, january 29th, a snowy day in our area, 2014, i'm andrea rose. >> i'm jessica doyle. monika santani has time saver traffic. it's challenging out there this morning. >>reporter: it is. you know, it's kind of tricky. >> and howard, of course, is taking a look at what we've got overnight. >> we've got a little bit of snow. it's pulling away now, still snowing across southern maryland, the totals, not quite an inch here in d.c., still snowing in prince fredrick, down in southern maryland, clinton three, brandywine
4:01 am
three. we've had some totals 4 1/2. snow is pulling away. we are going to have a nice, sunny day, a cold one, though. temperatures will get into the 25 to 30-degree range, so i'm expecting it to be below freezing, but with the sun out, we'll get a good deal of melting and a northwesterly wind at about 10, maybe 15 miles an hour at times. winter weather advisories have been canceled in dutchess county and prince george's county and those areas in fredricksburg that were in it, but still south and east, we have been going for a few more hours. notice calbert, st. maries. there's the neck of the snow this morning, not much going on north and west of town. we'll zoom in and show you what's happening here the last few hours. the back edge of the system continues to progress to the east. it is snowing in easton right now. annapolis shutting down with the snow, but there's, again, prince fredrick, 2 1/4.
4:02 am
st. mary's 4 to 5 inches of snow. another 90 minutes before that shuts down and we'll all be done with that. look at the temps this morning, very cold once again, single digits north to low- to mid- teens everywhere else. here comes monika, time saver traffic, and snow obviously causing some issues this morning. >>reporter: it is. i was asking all of my colleagues about their ride in this morning and for the most part everyone said that especially coming out of neighborhoods and lesser traveled roadways and even some of the major thoroughfares, for example, route 29 coming out of colesville, some of those roadways still have not been treated or will be treated shortly, but the major thoroughfares have to be treated first and bridges, ramps and overpasses are especially slippery. we have had multiple accidents overnight on especially those areas, bridges, ramps, overpasses, cars spinning out, even an overturned vehicle it was on the northbound side of i- 270 right here on our traffic feature on our pa pad app. there was -- on our ipad ap.
4:03 am
it has been cleared. before i go any further i will show you the traffic key. if you are using our traffic feature today, you'll know what to look for, green is fine and then you've got all these i- cons as well. they're really easy to understand and navigate. we'll go back to that right now. you can tell what you're looking at down to your street level, realtime information. now, if you are planning to head to the b.w. parkway, just want to tell you quickly, in greenbelt, a pole and wires down, blocking southbound b.w. parkway, that ramp to 193. crews are just head out there right now. i'll have more information on the roadways coming up. guys, back to you. >> thank you, monika. we have no major school system closures today, but we do have a few delays to tell you about. in virginia king george county schools and spots sylvania schools are closed and
4:04 am
shenandoah county schools delay ited one hour. >> maryland, calvertton school is delayed two hours and the only delay in d.c. right now is the jefferson academy. they're delayed two hours and, of course, you can always head to our website, defensenewstv.com for a complete -- wusa9 tv.com for delays and closings. many states are dealing with wicked winter weather and issued states of emergency. we didn't get quite as good morning, delia. >>reporter: good morning, jess, andrea. you know, this dusting that we did get is quite pretty, light, fluffy snow, easily just falls off your hands. can't quite make a snowball, but some great snow angels if the kids want to come out and play a little later before school. easy to brush off your car, so diving, getting out of the
4:05 am
house not a problem. my neighborhood is southeast d.c., a little slick getting out this morning. those side roads not treated, but take a look at the main roads here. we're at route 1 in woodbridge and the roads, you can see the car just going by smoothly and easily, the roads are down to pavement, just some moisture there on the ground. we only have accumulation, as you can imagine, on the untreated surfaces, grass, and, of course, some of the sidewalks, take a look at the parking lot, and, you know, that is just covered with just about a light dusting, maybe about an inch or so. not a whole lot here. and 95 as we were traveling from the district all the way down here to prince william county, no problem at all. we did see some crews out on the roads, so certainly they have done a good job treating the main roads, and so there is no problem commuting thus far. we are going to get back in the car, head further south, see if we can get another glimpse at what this winter weather brought p us early this
4:06 am
morning. and so we'll see you again at 4:30. back to you. >> thank you, delia. in woodbridge, virginia. this morning travelers are also waking up to cancellationations e-mails and texts. the delayed and canceled flights start in the atlanta and louisiana area, and they work their way up the mid- atlantic into the northeast. as of this morning, over 1,000 flights have alreadbeen canceled today, over 100 are delayed. those numbers may sound small, but as the day progresses, flight aware warns those numbers will rise. well, the snow and the bone-chilling overnight temperatures made for some miserable driving conditions this morning, as we heard from monika. >> erica gro is live roaming around town. i'll tell you, erica, it was a weird commute for me this morning. usually the roads that are plowed are not which made it a little slippery. how's it looking for you? >>reporter: well, so far we've had a pretty easy drive, though there are definitely a couple spots that you have to watch out for. so right now we're on route 5
4:07 am
heading south in prince george's county and we're heading into southern maryland, the kind of hot spot for the snow this time around. and we've definitely seen some of those overpasses and side roads still covered in snow, but the main road here, route 5 is looking good. if you're a little bit nervous about heading out early this morning, i would advise you to stay on the most right hand lane and not get into the passing lanes because as i'm looking out the window, out the windshield here, my photographer, kevin king, he is staying in that right hand lane, thand seems to be the lane that's had the most traffic and therefore it doesn't have any snow on it. however, the lanes to the left, if i look over and look at the passing lane, i can see it's still pretty white. so because those temperatures are so far below freezing, we are seeing some of that snow linger on the roadways, and even though they've been treated, we still do have a little bit of slush and snow
4:08 am
even here on route 5. now, the most troublesome spot that i've seen so far early this morning is on the rock creek parkway just getting onto the rock creek parkway. that on ramp that we experienced right by massachusetts avenue, right by the embassies if you're familiar with that area, it was definitely still completely snow covered, so just be very careful when you're merging onto some of those main roads as you're heading out early this morning. right now we're live on route 5 and i'm going to send it back to you in the studio. i'm erica grow, back to you. good advice, because those seem to be the last areas that have been plowed. >> yeah. rock creek park for me was completely covered. normally at this time it would have been treated, they would have gotten the snow off. the other thing i noticed, i travel down 50 through virginia, through fairfax county and into arlington county. when you crossed over the county line, you definitely saw a difference in terms of plowing and the road shifted because they would do the krerntd lane versus the passing

forecast that actually gets above freezing several days. how about that for a change, monika santani? >>reporter: i really like that. you're not going to like what you have to deal with outside, although most of the roadways look good like this on the beltway north of town. it's bad in the district, i know, there was an accident on 295 at malcolm x northbound with a car on its side, all the laips were blocked on the northbound -- lanes why blocked on the northbound side of 295. i'll have the rest of what's going on coming up next. >> thank you, monika. time now 4:12. we're bringing you the first "your money" segment. the dow break as five-day losing streak yesterday. investors cheered on by better than-than expected quarterly earnings by the likes of d.r. horton and pfizer. they're also waiting for a two- day meeting to wrap up this afternoon. the fed is expected to further reduce the stimulus for the economy. that could be bad for stocks. checking the numbers for you. the dow stands this morning at

here comes monika. she's got time saver traffic this thursday morning. >>reporter: kind of one of those strange mornings, howard, where you look out the window and you think, oh, it's not that bad, but considering all the accidents, crashes, incidents we've had around up to, especially with cars spinning out and even some overturned vehicles, you may want to reconsider that and give yourself extra time. you're going to need it this morning, especially coming out of lesser traveled roadways, neighborhoods and the like. now, if you're planning to head over into greenbelt, i want to zoom into that area. pole and wires down right here at route 193 and the b.w. parkway, that's affecting the ramp there, so park police are there, they know about it, you'll want to be aware of that. also down in the district right here on 295, overnight accident near malcolm x boulevard. the road is closed on the northbound side of 295. i suggest that you use mlk instead. that was a car on its side as well. it's been there for a while. right here you can see a bit of the slow traffic forming as it updates as well. now let's take you around town live to
