and if that's not enough, a third, even more severe system is lining up to strike the atlantic seaboard this weekend. today's storm will bring a combination of snow and freezing rain to an area stretching from nebraska to new england. this seemingly never-ending series of storms is affecting business and travel. yesterday's storm made travel difficult at best. in pennsylvania, trucks and cars slipped off roadways in the deep, wet snow. and many areas in the northeast got 8 inches or more. a state of emergency was declared in new jersey. already today, more than 500 flights have been canceled nationwide. and more than 1300 are delayed. meter relation eric fisher from our boston station wbz has more on the latest system. >> that latest system is getting wrapped up, is this going to drop a lot of snow for a lot of folks over the next couple of days. it will be moving across the plains and work its way into the

midwest and eventually into the northeast. so a lot of states with winter storm advisories and watches, covering every two dozen states, as a matter of fact, everyone dealing with this particular system. this morning, we start in the plains, heavy rainfall moving down from the tennessee valley as we head to the afternoon and evening. snow expanding from cincinnati, to chicago, westward to omaha as we head towards tuesday evening. and as we head to wednesday, this snow heads to the northeast. new york, much of an icy mix. over towards detroit, there will be snow coming down of course a trickle-down travel effect at the airports. this wraps up wednesday evening. 6 to 12 wide swath stretching from the great lakes and into the plains. 3 to 6 on either side of that. a couple spots along the way may just get over a foot, another significant winter storm. i'm meteorologist eric fisher.

new jersey governor chris christie said his office has been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors in the bridge scandal that's rocked his administration. christie answered questions about the scandal on a radio call-in show, ko im is here with more. >> reporter: good morning, christie said he may have heard about the issues, but an aide that may have orchestrated it as political payback isn't talking. the woman at the center of the bridge traffic scandal is keeping her mouth shut. christie's former chief of staff is invoking her fifth amendment rights. kelly will not cooperate with a subpoena from a state legislative committee. >> i know everything i needed to know from a point of employment for bridget kelly when she didn't tell me the truth, and i fired her. >> reporter: an e-mail from kelly last summer cost her her

job after ft. lee's mayor refused to endorse christie's erection bid. kelly e-mailed saying "time for traffic problems in ft. lee." and lanes on the george washington bridge were closed creating days of traffic jam. burg his radio show on monday, the governor repeated statements he made at a news conference last month. >> before these lanes were closed, i knew nothing about it. i didn't plan it. i didn't authorize it, i didn't approve it i knew nothing about it. >> reporter: christie's office is complying with subpoenas but another former aide linked to the scandal is not. christie says he understands why. >> people have rights and they're going to exercise those rights. >> reporter: the u.s. attorney's office is also investigating. this was the first time christie took questions since another former aide claims christie knew about the lane closures as they happened. christie said the matter of what he knew when is a game of

pushing even in their loss. brook silva braga. the dow sinks deeper and the super bowl attracts a record audience. marlie hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. the new york stock exchange opens in the wake of big losses following a weaker than expected manufacturing report. the dow suffered a triple-digit logs for the seventh time this year. the dow jones industrials fell 326 points, its worst day in seven months. the nasdaq composite lost nearly 107 points. investors moved into safer assets such as u.s. treasuries. the string of winter storms and unusually cold weather hurt car sales last month. overall, u.s. auto sales slipped 3% in january to just over 1 million. it was the first year-over-year drop since august 2010 but analysts say january was an

anomaly. and u.s. sales are on track to rise to 16 million this year. asian markets plunged on news of weak manufacturing in china. tokyo's nikkei plummeted more than 4%. hong kong's hang seng dropped nearly 3%. janet yellen was sworn in as the new chairman of the federal reserve. yellen is the first women to lead the fed. she replaces ben bernanke. yellen takes over as the fed begins to scale back its bonds-buying program. on capitol hill this week, pthere say series of hearings concerning the data breach of target and other retailers. today, senior tgt officials are scheduled to testify at a judiciary committee hearing. over the holidays, information was stolen from over 100 million target customers. and anne-marie, even though it was a blowout, the super bowl set a record for the most watched tv event in u.s. history. it's the fourth time in five years that the super bowl set

well, it certainly looks like fun. watching the rough surf come in off the coa ostf northern spain, only the people weren't expecting a giant wave to slam into the sea wall. amateur video shows them screaming and running away, but not before getting soaked. waves in some areas were as high as 24 feet. and a car chase in indiana

ended with an escaped prisoner being caught. michael david elle leaette has been on the run since sunday. he broke out of a michigan jail, abducted a woman and stole her car but she got free when they stopped for gas in indiana. he sped off and stole another car. that's when a sheriff spotted it and caught him and the woman was not hurt. a youtube video has led to an arrest. a former convince principal in california has been charged with sexually abuse two students. a video by the alleged victim accuses her of the crime. it has been posted since january and been seen nearly 1 million times the alleged victim claims she was adduced from 1997 and 2001 beginning when he was only 12 years old. >> reporter: this is andrea cardosa's booking photo just released after she was arrested and charged with 16 felony counts with illegal sexual contact with two underage girls

while a teacher and coach at chimawa and thomas school. attorney david ring represents one of the accusers, jamie, who brought the allegation to life through this youtube video. you ruined my life, you ruin might childhood, do you realize that? >> reporter: cardosa was most recently the principal at alhambra high school. cardosa resigned after the video went public. >> you should be so ashamed and so disgusted with yourself. >> i am. i am. >> reporter: ring said jamie had no idea that woman a decade after the alleged abuse her video post would result in an saeft and now with cardosa in prison. >> jamie will follow through with this as long as it takes, no matter what she needs to do. she's ready, willing and able to

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new york will be sunny today with a high of 36. miami, sunny as well. snow in chicago, though, and rain in dallas and sunshine in los angeles. in sports, the seattle seahawks returned home as super bowl champions for the first time in team history. fans gathered outside the team's practice facility to celebrate. the seahawks defeated the denver broncos 43-8 on super bowl sunday. the team's arrival was delayed, though. their plane made an unscheduled stop in minneapolis to deice. seattle quarterback russell wilson stayed behind here in new york. he was a guest of david letterman on monday's edition of "the late show." dave had a question about the

welcome to wusa9. today is tuesday, february 4, 2014. arei'm andrea roane. it's the month of love. i'm mike hydeck. snow is not the problem tonight. it will be the freezing rain we'll be dealing with. that covers most of the area. north of town winter storm warnings but in the metro even a freezing rain advisory for us till 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. here's a look at it. this got upgraded from a watch moments ago. all the counties white including howard, montgomery and north winter storm warnings. they expired 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

tomorrow. the freezing rain advisory is baltimore down through prince george's county and anne arundel county through the district in toward southern fauquier county, culpeper and toward charlottesville. that expires tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. we'll have a shorter duration of freezing rain. therefore we won't see as much. the big concern is going to be for ice in these areas. then as you head north of the mason-dixon line, it's ice and snow. i-80 corridor will get pounded from this all the way up to i- 84. clouds are with us. the radar is all quiet. where we have more breaks and deeper snow, there was 9 inches of snow in new york yesterday. they are 10 degrees right now. westminster 22. we're at the freezing mark in d.c. we'll be up around 40 this afternoon. i'll be back in a few minutes to talk about the ice potential in greater detail. right now monika with timesaver traffic. thank you so much. if you're planning to head around town, at least i have good news now early this morning. we dealt with a couple of rough conditions yesterday. you may deal with black ice this morning so do be careful

it comes to smoking a small amount of pot inside your home. what they cannot agree on is whether you should run the risk of being arrested if you smoke pot in public. if they cannot reach an agreement on that part of the bill, the whole bill could be tabled. president obama is traveling to prince george's county later today to promote improved internet access for the nation's schools. a white house program is designed to connect 99% of students to the next generation of high speed broadband technology within the next five years. president obama will discuss the connect ed initiative at buck lodge middle school in adelphi. a judge will decide today if eugene delgaudio is fit for office. it's accused of using his staff to support his nonprofit grop public advocate of the united states. a public jury declined to indict him but his fellow supervisors censured him. the judge will go over a petition by citizens who also
