it's not there because the snow's there. they're still coming snow removal. the far left. stay in the middle at least a few more hours. >> the snowplows are taking up space. >> those are some of the reasons why we have more closings today. for some of you it's going to be a five-day holiday weekend. >> we're jealous. >> let's start in maryland. where prince george's, anne arundel, frederick, calvert county schools are closed. >> in virginia a long list, alexandria, fairfax, arlington, four week, culpeper, prince -- fauquier, culpeper, prince william closed. >> d.c. public schools are closed but the administration offices are on a two-hour delay. again the federal government is on a two-hour delay. this is just a partial list. you can see the rest on our website at wusa9.com. so one-two punch yesterday. are we going to come back for a rematch with mother nature?

>> we have another clipper coming in tonight. some will see a dusting. in the mountains can get 2 to 3, locally 4 inches. this will be a quick hitter overnight tonight into saturday morning. the storm from yesterday winding up. it's hitting eastern new york and new england right now, down through the new york city area but that's pulling away. behind it it's left clear skies and breezy conditions. our forecast for you on this friday morning, finally friday, we have sunshine today. temperatures are going to be getting up into the low 40s this afternoon. so if you've shoveled and removed the snow off the sidewalks, the driveway, you should be in far better shape as we get into the later morning and afternoon. winds will be southwesterly at about 10 miles an hour. gusting over 20 though this early. then becoming a little bit calmer late this afternoon. right now those winds still gusty, especially along coastal areas. over 30 in atlantic city. gusts in the higher elevations

out west. davis gusting 20 miles an hour. we're gusting 24 in gaithersburg. temps still on thmild side. 38 at reagan national so we're doing a good deal of melting. 35 in annapolis. freezing in gaithersburg and hagerstown. even some of the areas showing 33, 34, surface temperatures, not air temperature, we measure 6 feet off the ground but the surface temps could be approaching freezing. look out for some slick spots this morning. highs later on upper 30s to low 40s. let's bring monika samtani in with timesaver traffic. yeah, rough going home. we made it. the shoulders and other areas you have to watch when you get off the highways. >> the ramps, too. they're tightly squeezed with the snow on either side so you have to be careful with that. even on some of the main roads where there are homes, people have shoveled their snow at the end ever the driveway where the snowplows came through and that snow is now on the roadway as well so that could affect your drive coming up upon little

patches of snow and even icy conditions at speeds. so you want to be really, really careful. i found the closer i actually got into the district, some of the roads had not been treated yet. in fact, i called ddot to check those out. they do have quite a bit of equipment out right now. they have 91 heavy plows, 72 light and 16 contracted trucks. if you live in the district, they are out right now in full force treating the roadways. if you use public transportation, vre is on an s schedule. metro bus suspended till 5:00 a.m. at least. an accident closing aviation boulevard at terminal road. you want to use elk ridge landing road as well. it may affect light rail. i'll have that coming up in my next report. big february nor'easter we had came and went. now it's all the residual issu. possibly like howard was saying a clipper or two. >> if you dare to open up the door and face the cold air, you probably notice the heaping

piles of snow lining the roads, enter secretaries and sidewalks. -- intersections and sidewalks. delia goncalves is live where the cleanup continues. >> reporter: we're live in the 2600 block of wisconsin avenue where we can tell you that the roads are looking really good. i'm looking at many of the main roads throughout the city are down to the payment. annual dray ya, i know you mentioned on your commute, 16th street, that area, still a little of this crunchy ice that we're now -- crunchy snow i should say that we're now experiencing some layering of ice over that snowfall from yesterday. so there's still some work to be done but take a look. there's a whole lot of work to be done on some of these side streets. this is davis street, 3600 block of davis street. it's a one-way and you can see there is only one way in and one way out at this point. really i don't really see a clear path from a plow at this point. however, you can just see that there are tire tracks and neighbors have done a good job

at least of getting a route in for each other to get into the neighborhood. but take a look. right here all of this crunchy snow. and this is at least i would say 3, 4 inches high. so obviously getting into this side street off the main road quite a challenge if you don't shovel this out. we're going to take a look at a lot of the side streets early this morning. a lot of them still need a lot of tlc, a lot of attention. that's why there is a two-hour delay for many of the schools that are back in session today. the federal government -- i should say that the federal government -- i should say the schools are off today but the federal government on a two- hour delay because a lot of these side streets. the maryland national guard is now activated to respond to weather conditions across the state. 250 guardsmen and a humvees are helping first responders and other crews coping with all the snow. governor martin o'malley says maryland has weathered the

storm pretty well so far and many of you stayed off the roads which made it easier for snowplow crews to do their job. this nor'easter is proving not to be only a dangerous storm but a deadly one. a vdot worker was killed when he pulled his church over in ashburn yesterday on chester street. he was standing near the rear of the truck when another salt truck smashed into it. the other driver was not injured. vdot crews had their hands full yesterday crisscrossing counties making sure roads were safe for motorists and pedestrians. >> some areas got hit a lot harder than others. leesburg measured 17isms. middleburg got two feet. dulles was just under a foot. hank silverberg is live in loudoun county checking on things now. what is behind you, hank? wow. >> reporter: well, what you're seeing is the sugarland plaza, one of the many shopping centers along route 7. it's

basically an ice skating rank. i don't want to move and do a triple axle. i'm not a olympian. but if you get a cup of coffee and pull into one of these shopping centers, you're liable to find this, a sheet of ice. as for the roads, most of the main roads, route 7, the dulles toll road, interstate 495, they were in pretty good shape. you can travel almost at speed. the trouble is at the enter secretaries. a lot of enter -- at the -- [ inaudible ] reporting live, hank silverberg, wusa9 live. >> that's a perfecfi of the parking lot behind him.

4:11 on this friday morning, quiet friday morning. still relatively mild. we have many areas above freezing. temperatures dropping a little bit still the next few hours. we have to worry about flash freezing on the the wet surfaces that are untreated. could be a big concern the next few hours. sunny, breezy, cold today.

inches of snow, you have to be prepared. >> reporter: dr. bill frona says this kind of physical work can take a toll on your body if you're not in shape. >> you have to take an assessment of what your physical condition is prior to heading out. you don't want to do this and end up having a heart attack. >> last year i hurt my back. >> reporter: he's not alone. thousands of people experience back pain every year if shoveling snow. >> both the heart is stressed by the cold as well as the actual physical activity of the removal. le the mechanics of the shoveling you have to get used to. >> reporter: take lots of breaks and if you skip the er, take advantage of your insurance plan's phone a physician program. >> a nurse or physician who actually answers the call may be able to help you with questions you have. do i need to see a doctor today? is it okay if i wait? >> reporter: of course if it's

serious, call 911. >> that was jan jeffcoat. those who have a history of heart problems should no shovel snow as arteries are already tighter and blood pressures rise when it's cold outside. as you just heard, that recent blast of snow and cold is really putting us at risk for a number of health issues, including a stroke. there is new research out of yale school of public health suggesting people may be more likely to suffer strokes whether the temperatures drop and the air is very moist. the study warnings people who are at -- warns people who are at risk for a stroke should avoid the outdoors when possible when there's extreme weather. a month after west virginia's tainted tap water issues, residents are struggling to even bathe in that water. it's valentine's day. howard promises he will not break your heart when it comes to the forecast. he is back right after this with

good morning. it's friday. it's valentine's day, happy valentine's to all of you. it's not snowing but refreezing could be a problem for you morning. >> hank silverberg is in fairfax county right now near -- loudoun county, excuse me. he showed that shopping center which was really wet but the surfaces, when air temp is 33, 34, clear skies, surface temperatures can drop more than the air temperature a little bit. it will not take much for anything that's not treated to have a flash freeze. if you've ever been on a road that flash freezes, that's a bad place to be. give them time. i think just about every school is closed in region. if you can give it a couple of hours once the sun gets out, we'll be in far better shape because temperatures will be above freezing, in fact 40 for a high for many of us. here's a look at our day planner on this friday morning. expecting a sunny day. kind of breezy this morning and

then this afternoon temperatures topping around 40, 42 in d.c. back to the mid-30s tonight with clouds rolling in. those clouds are going to drop some snow flakes overnight into saturday morning. we'll get a little accumulation in spots, especially to our north. there goes yesterday's storm, the second piece of the storm which dropped anywhere from 1 to as much as 6 inches across the region additionally on top of the areas. up north, spots have 2 feet of snow. a lot of areas north and west of town a foot and a half. officially 7 inches at national storm. for the duration of the and about a foot both at baltimore and dulles. it was a record breaking day for dulles on thursday where they picked up over 11 inches. they picked up an inch, inch and a half on wednesday night before midnight. 38 this morning in town. 20s here out west and north. so definitely a lot of frozen slick spots. this is what i'm talking about, flash freezing. you have 31 damascus and 35

andrews. waldorf 31. watch for slick spots there. dulles is now 33. bull run 27. we're really flirting with the freezing mark in many areas. you see something that's wet, it can very quickly go to something that is icy. great visibility on the michael & son weather camera with clear skies. 3. winds west, northwest at 9. overnight we've been having gusts over 30 miles an hour. they're starting to calm down. jet stream still coming on shore in the west. right here going to take you up to the northern plains. this guy is moving to the southeast. it's going to be tracking toward us. this is that next little clipper we're tracking for tonight into the first several hours of daylight tomorrow. what an impressive storm dropping a big area, a foot and a half, two feet snow totals here and still dumping across eastern new york state, northern new england now. it's changed over to rain in southeastern new england but they'll go back. for us finally we're clearing out but it doesn't look like it's going to last most of the

day. next system, here it comes. clouds increasing by 6:00 p.m. into the appalachians. overnight it will be approaching us. could be mild enough for a few raindrops with it especially south of town. in the morning a little bit of snow up north and in the mountains. we're talking about several inches. if you have plans to go skiing tomorrow, this whole thing pulls away in the afternoon and evening. skiing in places like timberline, snowshoe, they got a punch of snow yesterday. looks like a good ski weekend. we'll keep yellow alert up for early slick spots. we'll drop it by noon. 30 tonight. 20s in the suburbs with a little bit of snow overnight. we could see 3 inches near the maryland-pennsylvania border, 3 to 6 in the mountains. i don't think more than a dusting to an inch for the metro. tomorrow sunshine and 37. cold sunday, 35. here comes a warming trend. a chance of showers here and there tuesday through thursday. look at those highs in the 50s. here comes monika samtani.

happy valentine's day, monika. >> happy valentine's day. i like your pink tie. very nice. if you are planning to head outside, it's not very nice. it's not terrible but there are a couple of things you want to consider. i'm going to start off with public transportation first. vre is on an s schedule. metro bus suspended till 5:00 a.m. i'll keep you posted on their situation. in prince george's county, the bus is on a limited service right now. so keep that in mind for your travel plans. i also want to let you know that up near bwi airport on the north end of the airp, there are wires -- airport, there are wires down across the roadway. we're hearing there are live wires. aviation boulevard is closed at terminal road. you can use elkridge landing road as your alternate route on the north end of bwi airport. if you're planning to head on the northbound side of i-95, this looks pretty good to me. very nice as you travel through the springfield area. both the main and hov lanes cleared end to end.

we'll take a live look over on the american legion bridge. i just got off the phone with maryland state highway. they tell us that they know some of the ramps are still icy. they're headed out there to treat them with salt and they're trying to clear the shoulders as well, the ice and snow off on to the shoulders so you should be good to go within the next hour or so. i'll keep you posted. >> thanks a lot, monika. these are some of the measures people are doing to try to protect their loved ones. >> extreme but more than a month after a massive chemical leak in west virginia, people still distressed over their water. we talked to one woman who welcomed the snowstorm. >> how does it taste? >> i like it. >> reporter: 20 minutes ago this water was white, fluffy snow. >> survival mode. it's basically what it is. when a water crisis happens, we went into survival mode and you do what you got to do to survive. >> reporter: a chemical leak

contaminated the drinking water for nearly 300,000 people. >> we bring it in the house, put it in a big pot, melt it down and use it for bathing if we have to or cooking. boil it. i'll give it to the dogs after i melt it. we've been trying to make the best of the water situation because it's definitely not safe yet. >> reporter: the family says they've been scooping up snow and rain ever since this water crisis started last month. they just trust this way much more than what's coming out of their tap. >> it's got to be a little bit cleaner in some aspect. >> reporter: with four dogs, the irwins go through at least five gallons of water per day. after melting the snow, they store it. >> we started brainstorming to come up with everything we could to get more water for our family. >> reporter: how long before they turn on the tap? >> until i see proof that it's safe because i don't trust them. i don't trust what they tell us. >> reporter: a theory outlasting the thaw. >> west virginia american water officials say the tap water meets their standards.

4:26. clear and cold out there. watch out. we have wet streets but we're near freezing. we get a flash freeze on anything that's been untreated as temperatures drop a little more over the next few hours. as we go through the day, sunny. a little breezy, especially this morning. lunch time temps in the mid- to upper 30s. i expect our highs today into the low 40s with some upper 30s north and then there's going to be a chance for a little snow late tonight into the morning hours on saturday. let's check in with monika samtani. we still have issues out there. we do. some surprise icy patches as well. in fact, earlier this morning about 45 minutes ago, we had a car that had spun out on 270 northbound at i-370. that was cleared. you can see the southbound side at falls road looks pretty g. i got off the -- pretty good. i got off the phone with maryland state highway. they have 25 trucks out right now treating, sating where needed. back to you guys. a messy chain republican

car crash left interstate lanes blocked in minnesota. the slick roads caused one car to spin out which led to another crash and en another. over 20 cars ended up in this pileup late yesterday. it took crews hours to clear the lane. >> just an awful scene at a new york grocery store parking lot. a pregnant woman was struck and killed by a snowplow all while she was loading groceries in her car. it was a privately owned snowplow backing up and it hit the woman. her husband was standing just steps away when it happened. within minutes of the accident, the woman was rushed to the hospital. doctors performed a c-section, saved the baby. the baby boy was almost full term born weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. he's listed in critical condition this morning but his mother was pronounced dead. police are now questioning that snowplow operator. in virginia a gas station canopy collapsed under the heavy snow. firefighters say it happened thursday. fortunately no one was injured when the roof buckled and fell. a massive storm came and
