good morning and welcome to wusa9. today is tuesday, march 4th. 2014. yes, another week. another dave er to figure out what to do with your children. school is closed. we have the closings and delays at the bottom of our screen. good morning, i'm andrea roane. >> and i'm deck deck. my kids -- mike hydeck, my kids are bouncing off the wall. wow it seems like we've had storm after storm after storm howard. so at least the precipitation is gone yes? >> the street was plowed but an icy sheet after is that.
4:01 am
>> still is right? >> we're downloads in a few shot -- down to below zero in a few spots this morning. in record in d.c. still stands. we're in the teens. >> this first of all. there are some closings and delays we wanted to tell you about. >> all right, first off the federal government is open but it is on a two hour delay. d.c. government following the same pollty at two hour -- policy at two hour delay. montgomery county government is open, the university maryland of college park campus will open at 10:00 a.m. >> as far as closings in virginia we're going to start here -- the counties there all closed. in maryland -- >> d.c. public schools are opening two hours late. if you have to be at the bus stop this morning, you will definitely want to layer up. my thermometer in the car all the way and never veered if 10 degrees -- from 10 degrees air temperature. >> mean was 4 the whole time in. >> it was cold outside.
4:02 am
>> dulles is at 4 for a couple of hours and that's a new record. they got down to 1 above last night and set a record for the 3rd and the 4th. very cold temperatures out there. we start with a look at the day planner with clear skies. light winds. fresh snow pack. we get what's called radiational cooling and very impressive cold air mass. i'm impressed by it. temperatures are going to be at 30ed to. going to have some passing clouds through midday and more sun for the afternoon. and thankfully the winds, not too strong there. so northeasterly to about southeast perhaps in a few spots around 5, 8 miles an hour. the snow came yesterday. the impact of the timing were there. the amounts were a little less than first thought and i think most people are happy with that. but this morning you see the clouds from the west? as they come in they should help the temperatures maybe bump up a little bit but they are frigid right now. it's 4 below at the manassas airport. culpeper 2 below.
4:03 am
winchester 0 and frederick 1. westminster 0. andrews 9. mid teens across the bay and right along the bay we've got some upper teens and locally i want to just show you all right up to 1 now at dulles. coming in the right direction. two in reston and one in germantown but 18 here in washington. and i think i saw something -- yeah minus 3 for nokesville and 11 in waldorf. frigid this morning. we are looking at the futurecast and fairly -- quiet skies around here with the clouds midday. and by later on in the afternoon, we're going to see sunshine. couple of rain showers or even a little mix down in the norfolk region before the day is out if you're traveling in that direction. speaking of travel, my goodness, i'm passing road closures and i got snow plows on the interstate myself. tough morning for many. very tough morning i'm so happy that schools are either off or delayed. and i think we're going to need a little more time to clear up the roads especially as you come out of your neighborhoods. expect to find icy conditions.
4:04 am
once you're on a major thoroughfare a couple of issues now. first of all, you've got ice and snow cover at some points you can't see the lane markings. and at some point the chemical has kind of put this white film on the roads. so you can't see the lanes even on the major thoroughfares. metro rail is on a normal service. marc and vre full service and metrobus is a very limited service today. look at the website and our website. wusa9.com for that full schedule there. d.c. circulator bus is canceled for tomorrow and i believe d.c. snow emergency plan is still in place and please keep that in mind. a quick look outside i want to let you know in montgomery county, beech drive and little falls parkway are all closed because of ice. back to you guys. thanks a lot monika. the virginia d. o. t. is warning people be careful this morning. black ice is the main concern. any of the leftover plow spray is frozen. so that is the biggest dole

this morning. >> exactly. yesterday it was stay home, stay home. the crews have done some of it and hank silverburg joins us live from falls church. hank how do the roads look there this morning? >> the major roads as we drove in through northern virginia, they were pretty good. a lot of them are right down to the pavement. even some of the side streets are down to the pavement. where you have problems is neighborhoods like this. we're near -- appropriately named winter hill apartments. in falls church. if you can look over here you can see this hill right here. still snow-covered. and if you come down this hill too fast, either to go right or go straight you're going to spin out. trying to go up it. if you stop on the hill you may not get up. that's the problem you you're going to have in the region this morning. of course also the problem of trying to dig your car out. a lot of people took advantage of that yesterday afternoon to dig out when the snow stopped. but there are still some problems with cars that are covered with snow and people will be worried about getting the snow coming off. clean off the car and we have

seen a lot of snow plows out and they are doing a pretty good job of getting right down to the pavement. but it is cold out here. which means that pavement is frozen. so you need to be very very careful at intersections, on overpasses, and areas that are not traveled well and especially on four way stops because if you're going too fast, going into them, you'll skid right through them. we're live in falls church. hank silverburg, wusa9. >> all right hank thank you. >> he's looking at the conditions in virginia. the situation in maryland was different depending on where you woke up. we have reports of you know 5, 6 inches of snow and much less other places. so trying to get the suburbs clean when it's below zero is a huge challenge this morning. >> so advice that hank was giving you watch out at intersections, overpasses and especially four way stop signs. applies in maryland and delia goncalves is live in largo, maryland this morning. delia what are you experiencing? >> reporter: well listen folks who are heading out early this morning, really have to take it slow. because this intersection here
4:07 am
at route 202 and loxford road in landover -- largo rather, really really tough going. you can see it's still covered in thick snow and all the snow is really -- has a layer of ice underneath. so that really is the problem when you're dealing with the ice underneath the snow. really makes for slick conditions when you're driving through. we did see some crews out trying to clear these roads. so certainly crews are still out here early this morning. trying to get the work done. but as you know, landover road route 202, heavily traveled route from folks coming in and out of prince george's county. and with most of schools and the government reopened with the slight delay, lots of folks will be traveling today. thankfully, they will be heading to work. to school, a little later than normal because certainly they're going to need that extra time to travel through these roads. back to you in the studio. >> all right, and that's the
4:08 am
scene from maryland, driving in the district. >> yeah. the snow emergency routes almost down to the pavement. >> in many cases, but it's the neighborhoods that will be your toughest flight this morning. >> very icy. it is 4:08. tension in ukraine is affecting the markets here in the u.s.. coming up jess has that many her money report. >> plus brace for the extremely low temperatures. now that the snow is done, you are going to need layers. it is freezing record cold in some places, first alert forecast coming up next. >> we want to be our wusa9 facebook fan of the day. go to our facebook fan page and click the fan of the day button and fill out the forms. >> this week, the winners get tow tickets to ring -- four tickets to ringling brothers barnum
