earlier on in place like rockville and leesburg, but so far it has been pretty much a dry day and dry evening as we widen out here as you can see the extensive snow shield. why are we missing out on this one? it is because we had those very mild temperatures during the day. so that will prevent any accumulation as we still have winter weather advisories in effect and points north of that. you can see that it includes the city of hagerstown and be in effect until 8:00 tomorrow morning. and so even in the very early morning hours we are expecting this threat to completely diminish. our high temperatures today as we mentioned before, it will be too warm to support any of this really sticking. even in hagerstown a high of 38 in the high temperature, which was 42 in downtown washington. so overnight tonight we'll see the rain approach a few more rain showers and thetemperatures are holding steady 34 to 44 degrees. when we come back, we will talk about that rain/snow uhline will

now here is wusa9's first alert weather. so once again we dodge a big one as we think it's big news. >> that's right. the snow lover. i mean he was conflicted with this one. he was like oh man it's super bowl sunday. i might have to come to work and i love the snow. i'm not a snow lover, and i'm saying it is okay with this forecast.
6:46 pm
let's get it started with the look at the michael and son weather cam and right now we are still just cloudy out there. 42 degrees. so it will be a full 10 degrees above the freezing point. another good piece of news we can pass along, we don't have very much potential for any wintery mix. sleet and freezing rain is very low as we head to the overnight hour in this system, which will continue to approach us from that west as we will see that light wintery mix, especially north and west of the beltway before midnight. and so as you're heading back home from your super bowl celebration that there is a potential that things could get slippery. but right off the top of the newscast, they are doing a good job of pre-treating the roads. after midnight, everything will change over to rain, even in the northern portion of our viewing area. and by the time we would get to the monday morning commute it is just wet and icy and it is not white. as we head in to the afternoon it will be windy as we will see those temperatures falling very quickly in that afternoon as well. right now we're down to 36 in
6:47 pm
gaithersburg. 35 in hagerstown. so getting closer to that freezing mark, but it is still 38 in la platta. no potential for any freezing there. you can see on how far north that rain/snow line is right now. just like you were tuning in with us last night, how the line defended in to the midwest -- descended in to the midwest and chicago during the overnight hour. that same process will happen here, but you can see that line dip to the south, barely kind of grazing that beltway here with that icy mix. and then as we head through the overnight that it very quickly gets washed away. by the time you're stepping out the door on monday morning that we would have rain falling and the windy conditions that will be starting to move in, which these wind gusts will be in excess of 30 miles per hour in the afternoon, possibly over 40 miles per hour at times. some wrap around snow showers west of the divide. that is very typical on the backside of this storm system and then tuesday will be a very
6:48 pm
cold day, partly cloudy, dry, and another weak system approaching on wednesday, which looks like we could get just a little bit of the snow on thursday. but that is not looking like a big deal either. breaking it down for you, what to expect the precipitation type. as we would see just a little bit of the sleet or the freezing rain mixing in here with the rain and in places like leesburg, frederick and then in leesburg. then in washington and points south of that, mainly all rain if you see that single snowflake that i want you to tell me about it. then we will see a wintery mix with snow included in it, in place like hagerstown and up in to the panhandles of both maryland and west virginia. but even there accumulating snow, not looking very likely. overnight tonight that brief mix changing to all rain and temperatures are holding steady at 34 to 44 degrees overnight then just rain and rain showers on monday showers. heavy rain is possible even in the 30s and the 40s, blasting afternoon
6:49 pm
with the northwest winds at 15 to 25 miles an hour. it is possible in the afternoon, but overall it will be a windy day with temperatures falling from that high of 35 to 40. so tomorrow, it will be a yellow alert day again and then tuesday we are back to green where it will be dry and cold. much milder on wednesday, but just seasonably milder with a high of 44 degrees. in the first alert seven-day forecast after wednesday, temperatures are crashing again. but thursday is the day where we could see a few flakes that will be flying again, still doesn't look like the accumulating snow event, but there is the potential on thursday. >> the washington auto show wrapped up an hour ago at the washington convention center with one lucky man that went home with that new car. that's them the 23-year-old. he is one of ten contestants who has spent six days physically holding on to that car, those that managed to

choose that there, even though they were thrilled to go home with a brand new hyundai sonata. >> the whole time we have spent money as i heard about the attitude. but after a couple of days they would start talking strategy. and now, you know, i don't, that is the ride of my life with a bunch of great guys. >> thank you, vonn. he says the strategies of winner included beef jerky every night. now he can take them on a ride for their brand new car. >> yeah, they may have all left as he feels like he was the winner tonight. >> exactly. who did you pick in this game? >> the seahawks in this one. if you look at the crowd there, it is like 75% seahawks over the patriots where it is not a neutral site. >> all right. >> but the capitals were e they didn't want to compete for the super bowl looking for some

they drop a close one, 4-3 the final. after the game he talked about his team's missed opportunities. >> they need to try to catch the team ahead of us. we looked up the score board. i thought it was after the second period before the period started and i think that we would be in pittsburgh. i mean there's a great opportunity for us to get another point tonight and just crawl a little closer. we need to collect some points here. college hoops, brenda frees hosting iowa in a good game. that they lead 8-0 to start that game at half. and they would be too tough when it mattered the most with two of their game high 26 with less than 30 seconds left in that game that they would hang on to win this one. and today down under the men's final in the australian open. he was 4-4 in the finals in melbourne coming in to today. against andy murray, a guy who has no problem getting to the finals of this grand slam.
