. she was just waiting for the bus when a car jumped a curb and crashed into the woman. hello, everybody. i'm bruce johnson. we'll get to the bus stop crash in a moment, but first, it might look okay now, but plans for the rest of the weekend might hinge on the rest of the weekend forecast. we're bracing for freezing rain and sleet. let's begin with erica grow. >> that's right. we might even see some snow early in the day. this is what you need to know for tomorrow's forecast. snow and sleet start in the morning hours for most of us around 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning. this will move toward us from south to north, so obviously locations to the south of the beltway will see that precipitation first. but, of course, the milder air

also approaches from the south, so the changeoffer will happen there first. we're going to see a wintry mix throughout the immediate metro area through the early afternoon hours. and then we'll start to change over to rain, but temperatures will still be marginal so that we will have the light coating of freezing rain, the ice that falls on top of the sleet and snow. good news, though, we don't have nearly as much moisture in this forecast as we did with the one last saturday. so just light accumulations. it's going to be bad for the roads, but it could be much worse, just like it was, of course, last saturday. so here's the setup. we'll see cold air from top to bottom from the cloud to the ground to start. that's snow. we're going to see a little bit of a changeover by about noon. that milder air starts to wedge its way in here. that's when we get the sleet. the rain will melt before it hits the ground. that's when you get those ice balls that kind of pop off the windshield. then freezing rain as more mild air creeps its way into the

system and freezes on contact and this is what you can expect in the immediate metro area. we'll see a mix and rain, but the rain doesn't arrive until late in the afternoon. coming up in the full forecast, we'll time this out with 9 future cast and give you an idea of exactly what to expect in your neighborhood. back to you. >> thanks, erica. what caused a car to jump a curb and crash into a woman waiting at a bus stop today? this incident happened this afternoon at the corner of connecticut and olds avenue in kensington, maryland. montgomery county police say the 18-year-old victim faces life-threatening injuries when the toyota prius overturned. a man working at a nearby gas station saw the whole thing happen. >> there was a lady trapped and pretty soon she started bleeding from the head. when they pulled her out, she started screaming, so they were severe injuries. >> that woman was taken to the hospital where she is being treated tonight for a fractured leg. police say the driver of that

toyota suffered some type of medical event. he was also taken to the hospital for mere observation. a tractor-trailer overturned in columbia, maryland this afternoon. it happened earlier today on westbound route 100 at snowden river parkway. no one was hurt. tonight, howard county police are trying to determine what caused this mishap. legalized marijuana, it's only three days old in the nation's capital, but already has its own conference and its own job fair. cameron thompson reports from today's event that drew a packed house. >> reporter: whether you want to grow some green or make some green, the cannabis conference this weekend is giving future marijuana growers a crash course. the booths here at the fair cover the basics of initiative 71, selling gear to grow your own-- >> right now we're doing ecommerce. >> reporter: -- and smoke your own. but along with panel discussions, many are dedicated to the business potential of the marijuana industry.

>> there's 10 or 11 different sectors that we've categorized this industry into. there's money to be made in all of them. it comes down to the people managing the business, their business model, and their ability to finance their growth. >> reporter: one person looking to get into the business is abby castillo. >> very exciting. it's going to be a huge industry. excited to be a part of it. >> reporter: and what's his plan to get in the door? he's about to graduate with an electrical engineering degree. he says with home grown hydroponics, he'll be the marijuana's industry of calling the plumber. >> they use a lot of high power, so led lights, lighting systems. there is a quite a bit for electrical engineers, anything to do with electrical. >> reporter: but as everyone here understands, most of the potential can't be realized until the sale and taxation of marijuana is legal, and dc at- large council member david grasso says dc needs to butt

out of politics to make it happen. >> it's going to be a year to get through this. my bill is still there. hopefully we can get it through. >> reporter: cameron thompson, wusa 9. >> the conference continues sunday at the capital holiday inn from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. a shipment of mattresses turns out to be one of the largest marijuana busts at a border crossing. custom agents seized some 15 tons of marijuana hidden inside the mattresses thursday at a cargo port in california. authorities say it has a street value of close to $19 million. it's a first for the dc department of public works. they are on the streets this weekend to pick up your trash. bitter cold temperatures and snow left many of the city's alleys in an icy mess. that means unsafe footing for public works employees. the trash trucks are out this weekend. some 30 trucks from the private sector and three dozen temporary employees have been added to the fleet. dpw hopes to have all of the trash collected by the end weekend.

rand paul wins the washington times cpac presidential preference straw poll for the third time in a row. the results were released at today's conservative political action conference at national harbor in prince george's county. senator paul captured 25.7% of the votes. wisconsin governor scott walker came in second with 21.4%. more than 3000 conservative activists voted in the poll. just ahead on wusa 9 this weekend, a prominent russian opposition leader, gunned down, hours after speaking out. we'll have the latest. >> and it's never too soon to think about your own garden, as hundreds turn out for

. a 12-year-old girl from upper marlboro is missing tonight. prince george's county police want the public help in bringing her home. the girl was last seen around 7:45 friday morning on rosaryville road. she is 4' 8, weighs about 88 pounds. she has braided long hair and was last seen wearing pink flannel pajama pants with a tic tac toe design and pink slippers. police say she was not wearing her glasses. tomorrow marks a year since alicia rudd disappeared. that 8-year-old girl was last seen in the company of a janitor at the dc general homeless shelter, where al icia's family lived. the janitor, khalil tatum, committed suicide after killing

his own wife, according to police. there's been no sign of the girl since she disappeared. she would have been 9 years old. we're working on an update on her disappearance tonight on wusa 9 at 11:00. an investigation is under way into the motives behind the murder of a prominent russian opposition leader. he was gunned down just hours after a radio interview denouncing vladimir putin's policies. wendy gillette reports on the murder investigation. >> reporter: russians are leaving thousands of flowers at the bridge near the kremlin where opposition leader boris nemtsov was assassinated late friday night. >> my friend and the collaborator, leader of opposition mr. nemtsov was killed, was shot and killed. this absolutely is beyond imagination. >> reporter: police are examining this car to see if it was used in the drive-by shooting. someone shot nemtsov multiple times while he was walking with his girlfriend. it happened just a few hours after the 55-year-old went on the radio and said president

vladimir putin's policies were mad and aggressive. nemtsov was a former deputy prime minister who was one of putin's sharpest critics. he was planning to help lead a rally sunday to oppose russian's policies ukraine. nemtsov was about to reveal evidence that proved russia's involvement in the country's conflict. [ foreign language ] >> reporter: someone was afraid of this. boris wasn't afraid. killers and executers were afraid. the kremlin says putin offered his condolences and promised to personally oversee a full investigation, but so far, the investigative committee has not addressed the possibility nemtsov was killed for his opposition of putin. wendy gillette, cbs news, new york. >> investigators are looking into the possibility that nemtsov was killed to destabilize the country, because he may have been a target of islamic extremists or was gunned down for personal reasons. if you have problems finding healthy food, you might want to grow your own. that's the mantra of some 1600

people who packed into wilson senior high school in northwest washington today to talk about urban gardening. the 8th annual rooting dc forum featured a full day of workshops to help area residents grow and preserve their own food. the free event also featured cooking demonstrations and discussions on nutrition and access to food, something organizers say is a problem in the city. >> in the district we have some of the worst food access problems really in the country. and so there's a real feeling among those of us working in this field that if we can empower people to grow their own food, that is going to help them stretch their budgets and really deal with some of the food security issues. >> more than 60 nonprofits and green businesses from the washington area actually turned out to participate in today's forum. just ahead, a frightening scene at a skating rink after the roof comes crashing down in

. wildfires burning across parts of argentina this weekend. at least 13,000 acres of forest have been destroyed since the wildfires started four days ago. no injuries thus far, but authorities are calling it the worst ever in the region. a lightning strike is being blamed for the fires. terrifying moments for parents and children at a skating rink outside of boston this morning, when the roof collapsed. police believe the weight of the snow on top of the roof caused that collapse. a youth hockey team was participating, but everybody managed to escape injury. when the roof collapsed, the resulting air pressure also blew out the front portion of the building. . you see that situation in boston and you want to stop complaining about the situation here. >> well, i remember that happening locally in '96.

one of those really big snowfall years, where we saw a roof collapse. i think also at a skating rink. so it can happen. boy, it's really, really a tough situation up there in boston this year. but we have another winter weather event on the way. they keep on coming. let's take a look right now at our winter weather advisory. it is for the entire dmv. it is basically for the entire day on sunday. but here's the good news. it's an advisory. it's not a warning. we are not going to meet warning level criteria for this storm. that means that ice accumulations and snow accumulations will not be enough to suffice for a winter storm warning. great news there. it's just an advisory. right now, it's 30 degrees. the dewpoint is 4. it's cold and it's dry, but at least the winds are light right now out of the south at 3 miles per hour. current temperatures, 28 in manassas, 28 in hagerstown, 25 in gaithersburg. it's pretty cold. and here comes a winter storm.

you can see it on satellite and radar. it's snowing in st. louis, snowing in indianapolis and that's heading our way. on 9 future cast, you'll see the onset of the snow here around 9:00 a.m., as i mentioned at the beginning of the show. we'll see the wintry weather start to move in at that point. but it's not overspreading the entire area until about noon. look at the temperatures. 31 throughout almost the entire area. the pink is an indication of sleet and freezing rain, how deep the cold air is determining whether you have sleet pellets or whether this is falling as freezing rain. notice that the model is trying to change this over to plain rain by about 3:00, but temperatures, still 31 in leesburg, 32 in manassas. that means we'll continue to see an icy coating out there and we might not completely wash away the icy accumulations. this is what we're expecting on future cast, about 0.13 inches of ice in culpepper, manassas,

fredericksburg, la plata. that tenth of an inch is going to put a coating on everything, but it's not enough ice to pull down power lines or trees, thank goodness. it's not going to be that drastic of an event for us. overnight tonight, it's going to be really cold again. mostly cloudy, 16 to 24 degrees. then in the morning, we'll see that mixture of snow and sleet, less than an inch to around an inch of accumulation in the immediate metro area, with temperatures in the 20s. then in the afternoon, we'll start to change over to freezing rain. then eventually just plain rain. highs between 30 and 35 degrees. winds are very light out of the south-southeast. tomorrow, of course, is a yellow alert day because of that wintry mix, but at least it's a light wintry mix, so it won't take long to wash it away. 48 on monday. that will help to melt some of this. but it's still below average for this time of year. in the first alert seven-day forecast, that's when we'll really do the melting and

earlier this afternoon at xfinity center. terps had a chance to close out the home schedule unbeaten in big 10 play. wells had to fight back the tears during the ceremony, as he was very, very good for the maryland terp pins this afternoon. terps up by five. wells with the putback, as he would finish with 13 points. michigan would hang around. late second half, still a tight game. got some good ball movement coming up by maryland, finding upper marlboro's freshman tremble. knocks down the triple. terps have seven on a winning note at home, 66-56. >> i'm not exactly sure, but i'm 99.9% sure this is my first team that's gone undefeated at home in league play. >> that was a special day for this program and for each and every senior that was out there.
