jeff glor, it's been a tale of two coasts and right now march doesn't look much different. these places in the east just had their foldest february ever. caribou, maine, average temperature 2.7 degrees portland maine 13.8 and jfk airport, 24.5 degrees. the following spots in the west just had their hottest february on record. yuma arizona average 68.4 las vegas 60 and portland, oregon 49. -- these extremes are taking a toll in many waysment we start with jericka duncan on the economics in the east. >> this week boston is expected to surface-- surpass a record of nearly 108 total inches of snow this season. winter storms have cost massachusetts more than $100 million. attendance at places of worship are down. church leaders say they're struggling to keep up with snow removal heating and maintenance costs. 60 presbyterian churches in new england have collectively asked for at

been abnormallally warm this year including of all places alaska. where baren ground has forced the starting line for the iditarod sled dog race to be moved more than 200 miles north. the warmth also extends to the pacific ocean with water temperatures up to five degrees above normal forcing fish to migrate north leaving sea lion pups almost a thousand of them stranded and starving along the san diego coast. the storm that is now in california is already pushing east, with yet again more warm air to come. and no rain in sight. carter evans cbs news, los angeles. >> jeff: newly discovered e-mails are giving insight into the mind of the isis militant known as jihadi john. while living in london 2010 mohammed emwazi sent e-mails to a reporter for britain's mail on sunday newspaper expressing paranoia that he was being spied on by british intelligence. he said he felt quote like a

dead man walking. at the time emwazi was part of a group called the north-done boys which has sent dozens of jihadi fighters to syria and -- >> in moscow honoring morris nemtsov. he was gunned down near the kremlin friday night and today demonstrators chanted we will not forget, we will not forgive. and heroes don't die. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu arrived in washington this evening. in a speech to congress on tuesday, he will make his case against the deal on iran's nuclear program. netanyahu was invited by house republicans with who did not consult the white house. president obama has said he won't meet with netanyahu while he's in town. meanwhile today, secretary of state john kerry left for switzerland for more talks on iran. >> coming up here tonight taking stock of the nasdaq comeback. and a fire breaks out on one of disneyland's most popular rides.

>> jeff: the nasdaq has almost completed its epic climb back. last week the index nearly hit 5,000, where it hasn't been since the dotcom bubble burst 15 years ago. from there the index fell 80% in less than three years. here to explain the nasdaq's comeback and why it's important, analyst jill schl'eggsinger. always good to see you. it is amazing to think it was 15 years ago. >> it took that long because that's how big that bubble was. of course we go back to '94 there was real innovation at that time. the problem is that investors grabbed any part of that new economic that they could regardless of whether a company was profitable or not. from 1992 to 2000 the nasdaq index went from 600 to-- 600 to 5,000 that's cate a ride. by the time we peaked in march of 2000 to the end 69 year, that index was halved. >> jeff: the question is what happened to that new economy. >> it's still here.

so let's be clear that there was real invasion-- innovation at the time. i think the problem was that people were paying anything to get a piece of it and we look at pets.com it is a great example of the boom and bust. >> oh, wow, you have a stuffed things. i love stuffed things. >> here is a company that was started in 1998. really got huge fast. they raised $82 million in the beginning of the year 2000. that company was broke by the end of the year. that sock puppet went to puppy heaven. >> jeff: the companies of the nasdaq today are different though. >> well, yeah, i mean the nasdaq index itself has about half as many companies. they tend to be bigger. and you think of the big names like apple and microsoft and google, these are companies that are the backbone of this economy. and they are profitable. one thing i should note nasdaq 5,000 seems like an important number but when we adjust for inflation we actually would have to get to 7,000 to reclaim where we were 15 years ago.

>> jeff: winter still has three weeks left but in florida today, a sign of spring. baseball, the philadelphia phillies against the university of tampa in the first spring training exhibition game of the year. rough start for the phillies. the college kids took it 6-2. it's also been a rough few years for pitchers. arm injuries also leading to tommy john surgery have reached epidemic levels. no one seems to fully understand why. but a "60 minutes" sports found out there are those trying. >> i think baseball overall is ten years behind the other sports. with technology involved in other sports is out there they're using it. baseball is just now starting to realize that it could help. the information is out there jeff. it's out there. someone has to embrace it. put the-- aside and try to help the end-user the athelete. everybody in this room could fix this guy how.
