the american embassy in tokyo received threatening phone calls last month. >> reports of the threats surfaced hours before first lady michelle obama arrived in japan this morning. this is her very first visit to that country. seth doane is tracking that investigation through beijing. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. right now the u.s. embassy in tokyo is not saying much more other than as a matter of policy they will not discuss the ambassador's security. >> good morning. >> reporter: japanese media is reporting those phone calls were made to the u.s. embassy last month and that the caller was speaking english. u.s. ambassador caroline kennedy is quite high profile, of course, as daughter of former u.s. president john f. kennedy. the death threats targeting ambassador kennedy are reportedly similar to threats made to u.s. council general based on the southern japanese island of okinawa.

protests regularly pop up over the location of u.s. military bases and the presence of american military troops stationed there. okinawa is home to roughly half of the u.s. troops based in japan. the protests are nearly constant but are peaceful with no suggestion of violence, but earlier this month the u.s. ambassador to south korea, mark lippert, was knifed in the face and arm by an anti-u.s. activist. the ambassador received 80 stitches to close the wound ons he face. his attacker had been speaking about korean unification. when we have traveled with ambassador kennedy, we have seen her mixing with crowds with relatively unobtrusive security. while first lady michelle obama is in tokyo, she'll be traveling to the embassy and is expected to meet with ambassador kennedy. jeff? >> seth thanks.

the secret service is investigating an envelope sent to the white house with possible cyanide. major garrett is at the white house. major, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the letter never made it to the white house. like all letters sent to the white house it was screened at an offside facility in the washington, d.c. area but miles away from the white house. on monday it was submitted for biological testing. all the tests came back negative. the following day it was submitted for chemical testing and it came back with a presumptive positive reading for cyanide that attacks the heart and nervous system. the hard substance that contain add milky substance will undergo further testing. they will not talk on the motive for the letter or the inform bhiejsd it. they really improved its ability to test for biological and chemical agents after letters laced with anthrax were sent to

apartment on tuesday. witnesses reportedly saw officers carrying out two cardboard boxes. following the finale of the hbo documentary "the jinx," he was charged in the death of his friend susan berman. outside a courthouse his attorney maintained his innocence. >> robert durst did not kill susan berman. he doesn't know who did. in 2003 he was acquit ofted of murder and dismemberment of a texas man. 18-year-old kristin modafferi disappeared after leaving her job in san francisco. investigators placed durst in the bay area around that time. five months later karen marie mitchell was never seen again after leaving her aunt's store.

jeff pegues in washington is showing us how the alleged plot unraveled. good morning. >> good morning. investigators believe pugh turned his back on his country and was planning to join isis. it includes nearly 200 jihadi propaganda videos as well as what investigators believe was a plan to travel to syria to fight. the air force trained 47-year-old tairod pugh in the late 1980s to repair airplane engines and weapons systems. recently he had been working in the middle east as a contractor when according to court documents on january 10th, he flew from cairo, egypt, to istanbul turkey. investigators believe his plan was to join isis in syria. but he raised alarms when he said he was with the united states special forces and sought to visit turkey on vacation. he was sought on his way to egypt and deported back to the u.s. an fbi search of his computer

this morning the company is recalling 6.5 million boxes of its original flavor of its macaroni and cheese. some customers found small pieces of mettleal in it. >> in question are the 7.25-ounce boxes that are sold individually and in packs of three, four or five with best when used by dates between september 18th and october 11th of this year. the contaminated packages are also marked with a c2 on the side of the container. the company said there have been eight incidents where metal pieces have been found in the packaging. so far there are no reports injuries. 98% of u.s. and canadian homes use kraft products and the different versions of their macaroni and cheese bring in more than $100 million a year for the corporation. the company faced a similar problem in 2011 after thin wires were located in its velveeta

marriage that includes same-sex weddings. members voted on tuesday to change its constitution. it broadens marriage from being between a man and a woman to quote, two people traditionally a man and a woman. the change will take effect in june. this morning a university is dealing with fallout for a fraternity dealing with misconduct. a fraternity is sus spended after taking and sharing photos of women on a private facebook page. vinita nair is there this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. even though they have been suspended for a year there are still members living in this house. about 150 people had access to this private facebook page which showcased graphic images of women, hazing and drug sales. the photos some included this police report show women allegedly passed out or asleep seemingly photographed without

their consent. police say they were recovered from a once private facebook page created by members of the kappa kappa delta rho fraternity. >> they were primarily of fee maims undressed. they were disturbed. >> they believe the photos were taken here at the kappa delta rho house. we asked members for comments yesterday. >> are you guys -- >> no comment. >> you're on our property. in january a former kappa delta rho member alerted authorities of the facebook page. that had been taken down last year after a woman saw her image pulled down from a laptop in a frat house. she asked them to remove her photo but did not report the fraternity to authorities.

that? >> because the campaign was about enkbajing in a dialogue about race and here were these consumers in a negative way were trying to engage with him and they felt like he was blocking them and then he deleted his account so he wasn't engaging with them at all. >> now it is back up i here. >> it is back up. >> starbucks released a statement saying quote, we didn't feel it would be easy but we realized the discomfort. >> you have to add to the fact that robert schultz has done this kind of thing in terms of gun control and other issues. >> a couple of years ago when there was a gridlock in d.c. in 2012 he asked baristas to write come together on cups. they had some experience. they met with their employees in cities like new york and l.a. oakland, st. louis, and asked them what they thought about

new questions this morning about hertz's decision to install cameras in many of its cars. the nation's second largest company says the device cannot be turned on. many are asking why is hertz introducing this technology. vicente arenas went to hertz's headquarters in florida to find out. >> reporter: gps technology has become an essential tool for millions of drivers. some allow drivers to make a direct voice connection with emergency services. now hertz is adding a camera to its navigation system. rich broom is with the hertz corporation. >> another camera would come up to show the camera is functioning and coming on. >> broom says it's not on but is toying with the idea of making it compatible with its video conferencing services. >> we see real life applications as people have gotten used to

skype and face time but we haven't made the decision yet whether to go forward but it made a lot of sense to install the had ware rather than discover video conferencing is something people want to run and then we have to come out with another variation. >> reporter: experts say it could be invading the privacy of unsuspected drivers. jay stanley of the aclu says federal laws prohibit companies from recording audio but none address the use of video. should people be afraid it could turn on? >> no. there's no power into this unit. imagine a camera without battery. it won't work. the other thing is there is no software that will enable that camera to function. >> reporter: still the aclu expects hertz drivers to be

us. good morning. we've all heard about the benefits of breast-feeding and now it transfers to adults? is that really it? >> that is it. a number of studies have suggest thad breastfeeding increases iq during childhood but we didn't know exactly how long those potential benefits lasted. this study looked at more than 3,000 kids in brazil and followed them for 30 years. it turns out compared to kids who were breast fed for a month, kids breast fed for a year or longer had four points longer in their iq,ed stay in school a year longer. that's the equivalent of the monthly equivalent in brazil. >> there were a number of things they were looking at and ultima

ultimately they think it was breast-feeding. like the mother's education level, the parents' income the birth weight of the baby. a lot of things. >> exactly. there are a number of factors. >> but is there a suggestion that there's something about breastfeeding that increase yours iq other than the fact that it just does. >> there is that. threaten are a number of things. what studies like this run into problems with, the question is always is it the breast milk itself or is it the breastfeeding that can be the benefit? i think it's both. we know it has a number of nutrients that supports the developing brain and the nervous system. on the other hand the communication and bonding that happens during the breastfeeding process changes the brain physically. it make news rons connect with one another. that increases iq and it also boosts confidence which translates into achievement later in life.
