two-run homer and a single. the guys that don't play every day are getting a chance to play. ugg stepped up there, although they cut michael down to plate. and of course brice. all of those things need to happen if you're going to be competitive day in and day out. so we're happy about that one. that one's over. we look to tomorrow. >> would we be seeing the returning of brice as an all player? >> yeah. >> finally all the things people -- >> i don't know if it's finally. he's still 22. that's the perception a little bit, finally. but he's 22 years old and just 22. so i think he's starting to learn himself. he's learning how to -- how to play within himself. he's learning how to -- as i said, take what's given to him. he's taken to right field very well, taken to hitting in the middle of the order very well.

>> and welcome back. let's get you caught up with what happened today between the lines in case you missed it since that six-game losing streak. somebody lit the fuse in washington's club house. they turned it winning 8-10 or 9-11. they're creeping up the standings. this is a great day. frank robinson, on a icon. jose mobaton, up, up and away. his second of the year. washington's hit seven home runs the last three games.

a little defense, danny espinosa. the defense, it was infectious. but in the 5th inning, how about this? this is going -- boy, doug fisser doing a nice thing. but when he was on base, denard could not move him over. late in the game, fisser was cruising. here comes another nice place. escobar, watch this. he and desmond who struggled all year lock in the field, johnny on the spot. how about a z-pack smack. ryan zimmerman going yard or is it? at first, everybody thought it was a daily double. but the umpires look at it again, and you can see that

>> welcome back to this game on sports special. nats winning today 8-6 in dramatic fashion. well, if you jumped on the nats bandwagon from the beginning, here's how the scenario typically went for you, rfk stadium, ball game. chad cordero comes out to close. lights out. the man nicknamed the chief, diane roberts catching up with a former nationals star.

>> during the ten years the nationals have been around, they've had characters both boisterous and quiet. somewhere in th someone they called chief, closer chad cordero. what's he doing now? we caught up with anymore maryland. >> reporter: these days you can find cordero on the baseball fields with the titans. hhe's working as an undergraduate assistant with the baseball team. >> juggling baseball, classes, team, family time. i love it. i work with the bull pen guys and just to be able to put on a uniform again and be on the field, i love it. >> reporter: cordero remembers fondly his time with the washington nationals and their predecessors, the expos. the first game at rfk stadium in 2005 is his favorite nats memory. >> bringing back baseball for so many years and just seeing the fans -- jump up and down with the fans as they were jumping and stuff.

just the whole energy that night was unbelievable. >> reporter: cordero's best year with the franchise was the first in d.c. he was june's pitcher of the month and represented the nationals at the all-star game. rightie known for his fast ball says he remembers everything. >> just the whole vibe with the city is great. i still get goose bumps talking about it. my time here was probably one of the greatest times i've ever had in my life. >> one of the worst times came in 2010. when his nearly three-month old daughter died of sids. he left baseball in 2008 run and tried to make a comeback to the game after the loss of his daughter but could never return to his 2005 form. but he did return to nats park, where he only played one season. >> it was great.

there was only a couple faces that i actually played with. but some people came up and recognized me. i saw a couple of cordero jerseys. >> now cordero's cool experiences come courtesy with cal state fullerton. diane roberts, wusa 9 sports. >> great story, di. cordero had arm problems as you heard. the nats hope stephen strasburg didn't have any more arm problems. stras has spent the last couple days getting checked out by the chiropractor. good news. things seem to be trending in a positive direction who says things seem to be better. he threw a bull pen session today and saysall things were checking out. >> just trying to keep it simple. not trying to alter mechanics too much and let the better

range of motion, the better flexibility just kind of get me back on track. obviously there's always room to improve, and i'm just going to keep trying to get better and keep moving forward. >> all right. that is great news there. let's head back out to nats park. holden cushner was there. but first let's talk aboutstras. but he wasn't happy with the way the injury was reported. >> he wanted to clarify that today. but he wanted to make sure the people who covered the team on a regular basis, some of us were asked to announce our names so he knew the people he was talking to today. but he had said, listen, it was reported that my shoulder was bothering me, but that's not what it was. it's my ankle. my ankle, i was landing a different way. that led to a problem with my back. so it was never his shoulder. went to the chiropractor. it looks like it's all good.

he'll be throwing tomorrow. he'll be reevaluated. and we'll see when he can get back into rotation. zimmerman, tomorrow. and then they head to address and then back to san diego before heading back here. >> that's good news on him. let's go back to frank robinson. of course this was a special day. so many great memories surrounding him. but you might have one of the best stories of all,, right? you unearthed quite a story with frank? >> i remember talking with davy johnson during spring training. this was back in 2013. we got to talking about a night which all the orioles were having a good time. there was a pool involved. frank robinson fell in the pool, and davy said that he and boot powell ended up pulling frank robinson out of the pool. he says why don't you ask frank about it. well, fast forward two years later. i went up to frank today and i told him the story. he said it's absolutely not true. i said, it's not true? he said, no. someone else saved my life.

so davy, you were called out. it was not you. it was one of your teammates who saved frank robinson from drowning in a pool >> at least someone saved his life. real quick, bryce harper, real dramatics. what was it like become in the stadium? >> he's taken over. he's the face of the team. he's playings a -- he's turning into the player we thought he would be. >> great workout there today. we have one more break and then we wrap things up on this

40% of streetlights in detroit at one point did not work. at the time that the bankruptcy filing was done the public lighting authority had a hard time of finding a bank. citi did not run away from the table like some other bankers did. they had the strength to help us go to the credit markets and raise the money. it's a brighter day in detroit. kids are feeling safer while they walk to school. 40% of the lights were out but they're not out for long. they're coming back.

they started their one-mile walk. it was a walk that ended when they were picked up by police. >> i think child protective services in maryland have gone overboard. >> richard fox was among a small but determined group of families who believe it should be parents, not the state, who decide whether a child is mature enough to walk a reasonable distance from home without an adult. >> by letting our children walk to school, are we now going to get our kids picked up by the cops and cps knocking on our door? it's a very terrifying thought. i didn't think that could happen in the u.s. >> last month their two children were walking home from this park when someone called 911. >> two kids that are uncompanied and they've been walking around for probably about 20 minutes by themselves. >> just three blocks from their home, police took the children in custody and brought them to cps in rockville, not notifying their parents for hours.

>> what happened to their children is atrocious. i was absolutely livid. >> the problem with cps going after unattended kids is statewide. it crosses all races and barriers. we have older siblings watching younger siblings because child care is expensive. we shouldn't be criminalizing that. >> who should make that decision? >> they didn't attend, but their lawyer did, along with his own 10-year-old son. >> whenever i walk to the park or the library or to a market, i do it with just thinking, yeah, i can do this. >> reporter: turn to dowd said the parents are still recovering from their ordeal. >> put yourself in the shoes of a 10-year-old boy or 6-year-old girl and they're in the back of a police car for three hours. knowing that they were three blocks from home. that's a absolutely horrible situation. >> they're appealing child protective services' finding of neglect. they're still working on a

lawsuit against the county, one that may name cps and montgomery county police in the silver spring, wusa 9. >> the appeals process could last several months. an overturned tractor- trailer shuts down the bay bridge and backs up traffic for several hours today. it shut down all westbound lanes of the bridge in convene anne's county. >> meantime, in baltimore, prince released his protest song today just before a rally for peace concert tomorrow. ♪ >> according to a prince spokesperson, the song is about the unrest in baltimore and the killing of young black males in the country. he will headline a concert in

baltimore tomorrow. how's the weather going to be for that? hey, i know who we can ask. >> we do have a chance for showers tomorrow. today was gorgeous. you have plans this evening, check out our weather camera. it is bleufl out there this evening. we've got temperatures now in the 70s and still in washington, 81 degrees. gorgeous night. 79 now. we're coming down here as we approach the 8:00 hour. dew points in the 60. it's a little bit on the muggy side. still it looks good out there with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to 75 in springfield 37 we've got a cooler 71 -- we've got a cooler 71. what's going to happen. as we head into tonight, pretty quiet around here, but with the southeast winds, low clouds, patchy fog will return. and then tomorrow, we're going to watch anna. she's going to come onshore in eastern carolina. by monday morning, we'll see some of that.

and then here come some of the remnants. it's going to be warm through tuesday. in fact, almost hot tuesday before we cool down by the middle of the week back to more normal levels. for tonight, low to mid-60s. we'll see some clouds return. areas of fog late. southeast winds at 5. tomorrow morning, we start out with clouds and fog. late sun in the morning, 60s and 70s. i think a chance for isolated storms in the afternoon. another warm one. three-day forecast, no yellow alerts. we're going to watch monday into tuesday. a few showers and storms from time to time. but look at these temps, away above average. we're going to be in the 70s wednesday, thursday and friday. it looks fantastic around here. get your tee times now. but there will be a chance for storms on saturday 37 more heat and humid. >> thanks for watching. we'll see
