13. jim: final-round 67 for brandt. now everything hinges on the par attempt coming up for kirk. ian: good effort, though. that will carry forward to this coming week in dallas. confident feel going to the next tournament. jim: we're at the top of the hour 6:00 eastern time. the cbs golf family welcomes you to the crowne plaza invitational at colonial. what an exciting last day it has been. a very congested leaderboard throughout our coverage. at one time we had four players tied. 21 players within three of the lead and now this is chris kirk on the final green, leading by one. you can't say that he wins it with this putt because you still have poulter even though he's
6:01 pm
out of position at 17. nothing is official until the last man's in but this in all likelihood, would win him the golf tournament. oh what a par! ian: that was clutch for chris kirk. what an unbelievably solid up and down. jim: chris kirk. able to get up and down at the last two holes. jordan turns around and now can head home. because he has just been knocked out. all the 11's are out. ian: really steady confident stuff. as i said earlier goes about his business quietly. not ever overly exuberant in any stretch of the imagination. he's got a heart rate of 45 by the look of him. beautiful.
6:02 pm
jim: that pumped fist is about as much as you're going to get. ian: that's his fourth win on tour fit ends up that way and it looks like it will. jim: he had two wins last season including a big one in the fedexcup playoffs, the second leg. so he is rising up the rankings. this lanky georgia bulldog. ian: he'd actually experimented in the fall with a claw putting grip and actually used it earlier this year. there's his wife. big hug of congratulations. that's always a nice feeling. jim: 17. peter: ian poulter, his third. he'll have that left for par. let's go down to matt gogle. matt: thanks, peter. jordan you can't control what the other players do but you have to be proud of how you played today. jordan: sure, yeah, the second round set me back. trying to come back from being
6:03 pm
down was tough. stuck out the weather conditions. yeah i'm proud of it. would like to maybe go back to 16. other than that really proud to have way we finished at 18, giving it a chance. chris made a very solid five-footer there. matt: tell us about the adrenaline you felt from the crowd that was obviously pulling for you. jorled:: that was nice. it was a allowed roar. wanted to give them something to cheer about at the end. there and 13 are really cool putts to hit because of the environment and it was great to have their support and they were no louder than on 13 and -- 18 there. matt: great play we'll see you next week at the nelson. jordan: i'm excited for it. jim: this was the putt he made to keep his homes alive. if he thought it was loud this week, he's a dallas boy and he is heading home. only 30 miles from here. he'll go back to the playground,
6:04 pm
if you, will where he first burst on the scene as just a teenager. there will be tremendous support next week as spieth and snedeker are among those poulter all in the field. kisner, at the at&t byron nelson. ian: that's a pretty strong leaderboard right there. some great scoring this weekend. and a great mix of different styles of players. big hitters control guys, strategy guys. known putters. it's a great mix here always. jim: back over to 17. peter: here's the deal. ian poulter needs to hole this for his par then he needs to hole out his second shot at 18. the easy part is done. there is still a chance for ian poulter, albeit highly
6:05 pm
6:06 pm
jim: there is proud papa chris kirk with sons sawyer and foster. let's go down to david feherty. david: thank you jimmy. close but not quite close enough obviously. brandt: yeah, very disappoint. i played great just didn't make the putts on the last three holes like you're supposed to do. chris played great and did what he needed to do. i gave myself three good lucks on 16, 17, and 18 and wasn't able to get it done. david: you have to feel good about the way you're playing from the metroplex here for next
6:07 pm
week. brandt: yes, no fun right now but hopefully i'll be back next week ready to go. david: we can always tell you care, that's for sure. thanks, brandt. ian: i think he will be a very worthy champion. a welcome name on that wall of champions out on the first tee. good guy. jim: his game may be under the radar to a lot of folks that don't follow golf on a regular basis but everybody's realized out here since he first emerged that he's got a big arsenal of weapons. and chuck sheer, the president of colonial opening up the door to the family quarters there inside clubhouse. now ian poulter has to make a two. that's it. that's the only scenario that's still in play. but kirk's going to be at three wins now between last season and
6:08 pm
this season. ian: yes. jim: that's saying a lot. it's also going to move him close to -- well, he was 23rd in the world coming into the week. ian: definitely top 20. maybe up to 15. jim: at least, i would think. ian: and then jumps high up into the fedexcup standings as well. we're sort of midway through the season. his coach is doing pretty well scott hamilton. he's got steve bowditch, who won last year. russell henley multile winner. harris english, the same. jim: na dropped another shot at the 17th. it seemed like to me there were times early in this round -- and that one gets a generous kick. he seemed more jittery than what we'd seen the first three days of the tournament. ian: yeah, it showed. the intensity became a little
6:09 pm
bit of anger. and just couldnt couldn't turn it around. he's playing well, though. jim: we're one shot away from making it official. this guy to be the next winner at colonial and a name on the wall of champions. right now, verizon is offering unlimited talk and text. plus 10 gigs of shareable data. yeah, 10 gigantic gigs. for $80 a month. and $15 per line. more data than ever. for more of what you want. on the network that's #1 in speed, call, data, and reliability. so you never have to settle. $80 a month. for 10 gigs. and $15 per line. stop by or visit us online. and save without settling. only on verizon.
6:10 pm
jim: again tonight on cbs, it all begins with "60 minutes." "undercover boss," "madam secretary," "battle creek." and next saturday, the lucas oil offroad racing series continues. and so does our coverage of the pga tour with the at&t byron nelson coming up next weekend. ian: lord byron. jim: here's a little sampling of the field list and it's a good one. ian: yeah that's a good field
6:11 pm
that's for sure. some good names there. jim: brand snedeker's name is not on there but he, too will be heading over to the nelson. ian: it's a good stretch of tournaments here. jim: usually it's the other way around. usually starts at the nelson then come here. this year it's flipped. ian: and then on to jack's tournaments at memorial. jim: memphis right behind that. and there's not been a two at the 18th hole since the opening round three years ago louie oohs hains -- oosthuizen. he made an eagle here. that's the only thing that can change the outcome of this one. ian: i'd like to see ian poulter make a two and tie. unlikely but it's just good to see him play here at colonial. nearly always the top european players will be at wentworth playing in the pga championship. jim: he'll also be in the field
6:12 pm
at the nelson next week. ian: more and more we see a number of europeans not go over to play there week. we knight might see that more often. it's a good stretch of golf. he said he would always play his home event and he considers wobin his home event now not wentworth. hex i never played well at wentworth anyway, the course is too tough so he enjoys playing the british masters earlier in the season. jim: such a fickle game. here we were last sunday just in awe of the performance by mcilroy win big seven setting the tournament record. the course record. then he goes over to the british pga and misses the cut. you would never think there was a chance from what we saw last week that that level of excellence would disappear that fast. ian: it's such a difficult golf
6:13 pm
course. congratulations to the kirk family. so far looking good but you never know what might happen. golf is a crazy game. the pga tour rules official there adjudicating. maybe be sure he gets out of the casual water before he tax -- takes his drop and then will lift clean, and place from there. as i said that british masters was earlier in the season. it's actually at the back end of the season. it used to be early in the season when i played the european tour back in the 1980's. ian is actually going to host the tournament this year at his home club. jim: you mentioned john out there from the tour statue and what a fabulous job they've done to get this tournament 72 holes complete basically on time.
6:14 pm
of course slugger white mark russell spear heading the efforts. and their wonderful team. ian: even they were talk look the possibility of 54 holes with the forecast for today and tomorrow looking so poor. but we got lucky after that storm came through in morning. inch and a half of rain. said lift, clean, and place through the green which i think was a very smart decision. jim: i don't think anyone expected to see the sun out by the finish of competition. >> downwind, though. ian: yeah, down to the right. jim: terry mundy. ian: i think his heart rate has gone up to about 56 right now. jim: about as high as it gets for him. ian: yeah, that's a good time of
6:15 pm
6:16 pm
oh heading right. ian: he was aiming right trying to draw it in by the look of the set-up position. jim: congratulations to chris kirk. now, he's on about a seven-second delay so you get to see the final agonizing seconds waiting for it to be official and now here comes the moment he realizes it. ian: yeah, very nice. they're a little bit too young to understand what's going on look back at this with a fond affection in years to come. jim: little boy sawyer montgomery who turned 3 on march 14th and his youngestis left arm is foster anderson, who is just a year and a half old and they love seeing themselves on television. how cool is this? and dad has won the tournament. and his name will be placed there, 2015 on the wall of champions down by the first tee.
6:17 pm
jim: now they go through all of this trying to find a dry spot. >> that's what i'm saying, where my ball is. jim: looking for an escape from casual water. >> i think this is the best one. we could be here all day. jim: one thing about chris kirk, you could say the same thing about jason bohn, who won on the web.com tour, or brandt snedeker, came off the web.com tour. kirk did too. he was a winner on that circuit to get his career started. that was originally the ben hogan tour. and mr. hogan was in his late 70's when the commissioner at the time said hey what do you say? would you allow us to name this tour after you? and he took a lot of pride in that. and ha -- that hogan what was considered a developmental tour has had some tremendous games
6:18 pm
out there. has spawned another champion here at colonial. fine shot in from na. another name to be added to that wall that you adorned as well mr. baker-finch. it will go right below adam scott and to the right of rory sabbatini. the name of chris kirk. charley hoffman coming up next. ian: he just couldn't hole a putt either. jim: and in there close as well. all right, let's hear from the
6:19 pm
champ. david feherty is with him now. go ahead david. david: thank you jimmy. chris, win number four. does it get any easyer? chris: absolutely not. i was as nervous as i've ever been today. those up and downs the last couple of holes and especially make that putt at 18 was pretty sweet. david: you said you thought you might win this tournament, maybe not this year. chris: this has always been my favorite tournament on the tour since before i was on the tour. didn't feel like i was swinging that well earlier in the week but somehow i was able to get it done. david: what does it mean to you to get your name on that wall with all of those great champions? chris: unbelievable. to be a part of the history of this great tournament is amazing to me. david: congratulations. number four, a great win. chris: thanks. jim: thank you david. so cool to hear it too but even before this week he considered this to be his favorite tournament and has those ties
6:20 pm
that go back to 2007 when he won the hogan award that is given annually to the top collegiate golfer and amateur. it was given to jon rahn from arizona state earlier in the week. a joint effort by two outstanding clubs colonial and bel air, and chris kirk, i think he did a great job of honoring back both of those clubs and specifically here at colonial country club with his worlds of appreciation for this tournament for winning this tournament being here this week and coming back to his favorite place as the champion. ian: it's good to hear the players say that as well that it's always highly regarded in all of the polls as to the better counters on tour. people always reward riviera and memorial and here and harbour town as top quality courses and
6:21 pm
very friendly environment here at the colonial country club. everyone loves having the tournament and since 1946 it's always been one of the best. jim: chris kirk, if you'll raleigh, was really playing his best golf last september. a lot of people thought had he waited an extra week even that chris would have been a pick for the ryder cup team but he, with this victory is certainly going to put himself in a position where i would be shocked -- even if he did nothing else the rest of the way, to make the u.s. presidents cup team this fall. he came in 12th and this performance here will move him into fourth position so he is going to be representing his nation in international competition. no doubt. later this fall. ian: in korea this year. nick price will captain the international team with k.j.
6:22 pm
choi the assistant captain. jim: jay haas, the u.s. amount -- captain. with davis love and fred couples as assistants. this is for a share of second for poulter. good putt. ian: well, he putted well all week. holed a bunch of putts over 10 feet long, more than anyone else in the field. just a couple of frustrating tee shots today for ian. jim: you know, i think back, as well as he putted, he's going to finish two behind kirk and yesterday he had that four-putt green at the 10th. ian: right. jim: including one of the nastiest lip-outs i've ever seen. again, the difference in the end, you slap it around for four days some 268 times in the case of chris kirk and the fractions the difference. 270 shots over four days for
6:23 pm
poulter. interviews now for the next hour or so plus a trophy presentation and the jacket on the way for kirk. as hoffman has a chance to make birdie and move into a tie for fifth. if he can hole it. ah, charley. ian: he didn't see him hole one putt on air today. jim: this whole group not really getting a lot of positive energy or momentum. no one in this grouping of three will be under par for the day. that's 70 for charley -- ian: amazing how that goes. jim: 70 for poulter. na has a birdie putt that if he holes he'd be two over for the day, 72. before we stem aside i want to wish happy birthday to our tremendous unsung hero, if you
6:24 pm
will editorial consultant out here on cbs golf as well as our nfl coverage, mr. tommy spencer, on his day. as always, greatly appreciated. ian: happy birthday, tom. always a huge help. couldn't get it done without him. come on, kevin. a nice, positive finish. finish at least in the top 10. jim: there you go. yep that did, in fact. he had to hole it to finish in the top 10. it will be tied 10th for the man who was in first position overnight. so the marvin leonard trophy this year belongs to chris kirk. and all of his ties here to colonial. since he was an amateur and he
6:25 pm
was recognized here as the best. comes back as a professional and a father of two and takes the title, his fourth overall win on the pga tour. and a blossoming, strong young career. he moves to 14 in the fedexcup standings. we'll come back with some final thoughts here in fort worth when we continue after this world from your local station.
6:26 pm
6:27 pm
saying during commercial breaks, this is going to be a playoff. there could be who knows five or six people in the playoff. as so often is the case. one guy breaks free a little bit, a couple others drop back. kirk takes the title. ian: i was surprised because at one point we had 25 players within four of the lead. i was so surprised that 12 under won it outright. i would have thought 13 at least would have been the number to make the playoff. they couldn't get the birdies at the right times. we heard brandt snedeker say he left three out there. jim: kirk wins it with a birdie at the 15th hole. and there's my buddy justin, who we had the great honor of hosting up here in the tower all day long. down from norman, oklahoma, and his man joe. i got to tell you. a similar frame chris kirk and ian baker-finch. perhaps that jackets of yours
6:28 pm
ian. before they get fitted for the real jacket for kirk as the champion, programs you take that beautiful colt you earned back in 1989 and let him slip it on today. ian: i think he'd fit into the one that i actually got when i won. that was more of a 42. this is a 4 . jim: really? you didn't have to tell us that. ian: he'll look good in plaid. jim: what a save at 128. clinched it. the par to win by one over jordan spieth and brandt snedeker and jason bohn and for ian baker-finch and all the crew, lance barrow and steve melton. this is jim nantz saying so long from colonial. and congratulations to chris kirk. the champion.
