welcome to "cbs this morning." gayle king is off. jeff glor of our digital network wbsn is here. a man hunt is going on for two convicted killers in upstate new york. the search stretches from the united states into canada. >> police say the elaborate plot took days to execute. the prisoners used power tools to cut through brick and steel walls. don dahler is at the correctional facility. good morning. >> reporter: the fugitives both convicted murderers are considered to be very dangerous. governor cuomo is calling this a crisis in the state and they're calling for a $100,000 reward for the apprehension of these men. >> we will leave no stone unturned. they could be anywhere but they'll be found. >> reporter: the search has

expanded beyond new york and surrounding states even canada. they include hundreds of officers on the air and in the ground. the pair were serving lengthy sentences for murder. sweat for killing a broom county sheriff's department in 2002 and matt for murdering and dismembering his former boss in 1997. sometime on saturday they escaped through holes they cut with power tools. climbed a brick wall climbed through a catwalk and weaved through a complex series of tunnels. they left behind a note and asaid "have a night day." cuomo said it's like a plot from a movie. >> you look at the plot and it's extraordinary. almost unusual and impossible to duplicate.

>> ron hosko is former director of the criminal division. he thinks the two suspects must have had help. >> they had time to corrupt a guard or multiple guards. they had time to facilitate this and they took advantage of that. >> reporter: the big question is where did the men get the tools. the investigators haven't recovered them yet. they're actually interviewing a lot of contractors who were doing work here at the prison over the past cup of weeks. >> don, thank you very much. a new jersey concert turned into chaos. police used tear gas to control a crowd outside a summer jam hip-hop concert at the metlife stadium. many tried to enter illegally. elaine quijano is there where a state trooper was hurt. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. summer jam is an annual event

put on by a new york radio station, hot 97. last night the concert was marred by fighted with police. the scene sold outside the hip-hop concert quickly descended into chaos last night as police in riot gear clashed with a massive crowd outside of new jersey's metlife stadium. angry fans launched bottles at police. state troopers were seen using tear gas and pepper to try to break up the crowd. >> very scary. i've about never seen anything like this and i've about been coming >> police say it began when people tried to illegally climb fences and force their way past security. police blocked off the entrance and told everyone even those with tickets to leash the stadium. witnesses say it quickly escalated and turned violent after that as fans turned angry.

in our "morning rounds," how where you live decides if you recover from cancer. kentucky ranks number one. the lowest mortality rate is utah. lung cancer is the leading cause of death in the disease in 45 of 50 states. the good news the government says overall the number of people surviving cancer is rising. that trimd plans to continue for the next decade. our dr. david agus leads the west side cancer center. good morning. >> good morning. >> what does it tell us? >> the south is the perfect storm. many more smokers, they're obese, sedentary, and there's

more poverty. the incidence is higher. so all of a sudden they come together and the death rate of cancer is very different from other states. and so what we need to do is become aware of that and start to act on that. tobacco is still being used in many states at a very high level, and that's got to stop. >> where are we with respect to all these new therapies that have somehow shown some success for some people in terms of at least delaying the ultimate end? >> so the big cancer meetings were i ago and two major trends came out of them. one is called mow lek youlecularly targeted cancer and taking a pill to turn it off. that takes time. there are dozens of treatments on the market. the next is immao though therapy. it's fda approved in skin

cancer, mel nona. but all of a sudden we have head and neck cancer other kinds of lung cancer liver cancer colon cancer. it buys time and when it does it's dramatic. >> how longoften does it work. >> it works in 20% of the patients and buys time. much better. still, for 80% of patients it doesn't work in. for those patients they're just staring at an end that isn't good we need to change how we deal with this. we've maude this much progress. we need more. >> how much time does it buy and how much does it cost? >> it can buy weeks to months. the other, a year or two. the costs to make a cancer drug
