good morning. it is wednesday, july 8th 2015. welcome to "cbs this morning." the mystery behind what caused a midair crash between an f-16 and a small passenger plane. we're on the ground where the search continues for victims. an illegal immigrant charged with murder in san francisco allegedly used a gun stolen from a federal agent. and two americans g areored while running with the bulls in pamplona, spain. we'll talk with one of them who's done it 38 times. >> but we begin this morning with today's "eye opener," your world in 90 seconds. the debris i saw, it didn't

welcome to "cbs this morning." charlie rose and gayle king are off so anthony mace and vinita nair are here. good morning. >> good morning. investigators are trying to figure out why a small plane smashed into an f-16. >> the f-16 crashed into the historic lewis field plantation. omar villafranca is in mungsembers of congress moncks corner. >> they're trying to find the bodies of the two victims that were on that cessna. >> we're getting reports of two planes down at this time small plane versus a military fighter

jet. small plane in the water. >> reporter: the midair clikz happened suddenly tuesday morning sending both planes down roughly 25 miles north of charleston. this video shows member os of the air force removing one of the jet's engines into a nobile home. cliff cannon witnessed the collision. >> there was an explosion, black smoke, debris falling. >> what did you think it was? >> i thought it was fireworks. >> it took off just before 11:00 likely on its way to myrtle beach. the f-16 was headed for a training skper siegs. investigators say at 11:02 a.m. the planes collided. the air force jet broad siding the smaller plane. >> are you lucky and blessed? >> absolutely lucky and blessed.

>> reporter: beverly said she and her husband watched helplessly as it approached her property. >> it came right over the property. >> how close? >> very close. it banked out and left and seconds later we heard boom. >> reporter: the air force has identified the pilot as aaron johnson, an experienced pilot with over 1,500 miles of flying. he was talkin' to a hospital where he was evaluated. he suffered no injuries. now, local, state, and federal agencies are searching for the bodies of the two people. >> we have sonar in the river, we have people in the rice fields looking and a lot is going on to try to locate those people. >> reporter: just to give you a comparison the cessna weighs about 1,500 when it's fully loaded with fuel. the f-16 jet weighcarries about

20,000. that's tons. cbs news has now learned the gun used in that killing belonged to a federal agent. the suspect said he found the gun wrapped in a t-shirt. francisco sanchez made his first court appearance yesterday following the death of kathryn steinle. john blackstone is in san francisco with all of the developing details. good morning. >> good morning. the gunman pleaded not guilty. he's been in the middle of a debate whereby officials are prohibited from helping federal aauthorities. the policy debate is being eclipsed by this unexpected twist in the crime itself. over and over on tuesday want francisco lopez-sanchez told the judge he was not guilty in the

shooting death of kathryn steinle. she was shot and killed last week while strolling with her father along the peer. sanchez said he found the gun wrapped in a t-shirt. >> this could be an accident. >> they have learned it was owned by a federal agentle and according to the "san francisco chronicle" it was stolen last week. questions were raised before this news even broke late tuesday. >> where did the gun come from? how many times was it fired? we don't have this information yet, but going forward, we will thoroughly investigate it. the sheriff's department released sanchez from custody in april without telling federal authorities who had asked to be notified when he was set free

but prosecutors say the focus should not be on the gun or immigration issues but the victim in case. >> today is about kate and doing everything we ethically can and prosecute this case and bring this justice that this family rightly deserves. on sunday in a tv jailhouse interview sanchez admitted he had killed steinle, but his defense attorney said his client was dealing with a language bearier and didn't understand what he was saying. sanchez remains in jail held on a $5 million bail. norah? >> thank you so much. this morning republicans are rejecting hillary clinton's comments. the front-runner said tuesday all the gop candidates are, quote, in the same general area on immigration.

communities in southern missouri and indiana face similar conditions. the fast moving waters forced the evacuation of multiple homes in the area. this morning jared fogle, the spokesman for subway has been suspended. it follows a raid. anna werner. good morning. >> good morning. jared dropped 240 points on subway sandwiches. it appears foge sl now under investigation. for 15 years jared fogle has been the face of subway. now he's caught up in a child porn case.

federal and state investigators showed up to search his home in zionsville. >> he was a private. you didn't see too much of him. mostly his family his wife. we didn't think too much of it. >> agents were seen bringing computers, dvd players and other items from his house. as his home was being searched fogle left in a car driven by his attorney. he said his client had done nothing wrong. al berker said he has not been arraigned on any charges. >> fogle became a household name. >> i lost 245 pounds and i kept it off. >> but on tuesday subway

i talk with my girlfriends. how is your re-entry. how are some of the ways to lessen it? >> let's break it up into three bits. before you go, there are a couple of tips. the first thing you want to do is not plan a late sunday night return. the only thing you do is set yourself up for monday morning blues, you wake up. yu're exhausted. you almost have a vacation headache. plan a saturday to saturday trip. another thing before you do is block out time in your calendar to catch up when you're back so that every mindute on your monday and tuesday back is not spent on new meetings but instead focus on the e-mails and work you didn't get to. block out that time. >> i try not to talk to people who are back on their first day because they're usually in

fame. >> you see so many images and you hear her say i don't know if i'm ready to be famous and handle all that pressure. what impact do you think her husband -- her boyfriend and husband, we met them two times, what impact did they have? >> if she had not had met blake she wouldn't have had this love affair which caused her to right about it. so part of the story is to understand concerts of the heart. in amy's case she wrote about real incidents. if she had not met him, we wouldn't have had this music. by meeting him she had to write this love affair. that's the challenge. to try to unravel every song. you realize most songs are based on it. >> she drank herself to death. >> a mixture of that and bulimia. >> and she was a heavy drug

user. how did she go down that path? >> that's the million-dollar issue. it seems there was an issue with self-esteem. she had an addictive personality. whether it was fine shoes and cds and flowers. i was with the producer shortly after he saw this film for the first time. he was blown away because it showed how creative she was, how strong, how funny. you have another extreme, her parents and it does not come out looking particularly good. >> we tried to be honest to amy of what the show was about. this film is the essence of her.
