captioning funded by cbs welcome to "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is off. clarissa ward is with us all week. welcome back. a new poll shows donald trump is gaining more ground in the presidential race. he leads hillary clinton. the poll also shows a majority of american voters, 534%. now have an unfavorable view of clinton. the democratic front-runner was grilled on tuesday about the private e-mail server she used as secretary of state and she did not back down. nancy cordes is in washington with clinton's very firm response. nancy, good morning. >> good morning. it really was a departure from what we've heard from clinton in recent weeks when she either stuck to shortly answers. this time she got animated. there was still one aspect of

this she avoided. in a vegas gymnasium, clinton said she was being singled out. she shrugged off the fact that intelligence officials now say some of those e-mails should have been marked classified and transmitted via a secure government system. >> what you're seeing now is a disagreement between agency says, you know what, they should have, and the other saying, no, they shouldn't. that has nothing do with me. everybody's acting like this is the first time it's happened to me. it happens all the time. >> reporter: but the fbi doesn't ask for people's servers all the time. >> i have no idea. that's why we turned it over. >> you were in charge of it. did you wipe the server. like, with a cloth or something? >> i don't know. you know how it worked digitally. >> i don't know how it works

way it's just an unstable area at this time, so i made the decision that we're not going to dig in the area and put other people at risk. that also meant i had to make the decision that three people weren't going to come home tonight. >> reports of landslides and sinkholes came in early tuesday morning after the city was hit with 2 1/2 inches of rain in just 24 hours. alaska glonch bill walker. we're sending people down to do all we can to help in that situation. >> reporter: police closed streets after one landslide took three people. the city administrator mark gorman delivered the heart-wrenching news to his ond tell her that her husband was missing in a landslide. she came out with rubber gloves to say i'm here to start

digging. >> reporter: later today alaska governor bill walker to tour the slide area. sitka city and borough officials hope they can declare it a disaster. back to you. >> heather, thank you. fast-moving flames are forcing more people out of their homes. the line belt fire is one of 17 fires in washington and among dozens burning in the western united states. across the country more than 7 million acres have burned so far this year. that is an area bigger than the state of massachusetts. one of the most devastating is in chelan, washington. more than 100 national guard members have been brought in to help. danielle nottingham is at the guards' base camp. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as you said, i'm at the national guard base camp. about 170 square miles have burned here so far with a dozen

buildings destroyed and the conditions they dealering with here are similar to dozens of fires burning across the west. as wildfires burned across washington state more people are being forced out of their homes. one fire jumped the containment line racing toward a mountain and a town of 2 hub. everyone is being ordered out. it's a battle across the west which has seen nearly 100 fires since the weekend. this fire in central california caused multiple problems for firefighters. >> we're dealing with deep rugged terrain and drought conditions. it's a difficult place to work. >> reporter: hundreds in chelan, washington, are facing new warnings this morning. the county sheriff called all days off to patrol areas where there are looters.

>> since the month of june we've had crews out almost every week for those 14-day assignments on fire after fire after fire, so that kind of co-lekkive fatigue that's happening throughout the state on many responders is a huge impact. >> reporter: since we've been here, we've seen black hawk helicopters to deal with the new flames sparking in the hills. some of the terrain is so dangerous that firefighters known as smoke jukers are parachuting in to put out flames and deal with hot spots. meanwhi meanwhile the battle continues for weeks and ends to come. are you looking for an end in sight? >> i don't look for an end in sight. >> reporter: and national guard members faced an additional chachlkt the national weather

service issued a red flag warning. high humtsed and winds could make the flames spread even faster. an explosion occurred outside a motel 6. one utility worker was hurt. maria guerrier owe of our seattle affiliate cairo is there this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. firefighters stayed on the scene to deal with any hot spots. there had been around 65 people inside the hotel at the time when one quarter of it exploded. >> i have an skploes. it looks like the east side of motel 6 exploded. >> reporter: late tuesday night firefighters responded to a call

of an explosion. it sent debris and flames shooting into the air. >> they were blown back about 20 feet. thankfully no major injuries among our firefighters. >> reporter: one gas company employee was critically injured in the blast attempting to stop the leak. he suffered severe head injuries and second and third degree burns. >> smelling the gas and seeing the leak i got as far away as i could and about five or ten minutes later, the explosion happened. >> it could have caused more casualties if not for the quick thinking of the hotel manager, a former firefighter. >> i knew this was very big. i made the executive decision to evacuate the building. i pulled the alarm and said we've got to i evacuate because

i was worried about an explosion. >> the cause of this explosion is still under investigation. clarissa, back to you. >> thank you. the longtime spokesman for fast food giant subway expected to plead guilty this morning to possession of child pornography. the fbi raided jeremy fogle's home last month. adriana diaz is there leave this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. he's been under the microscope since may when the executive director of his foundation to fight child obesity was arrested. six weeks after federal agents seize computers, dvds, and other evidence from his home, jared fogle is expected to plead guilty to charges of child pornography according to our national affiliate.

prosecutors say owen labrie was a senior when he allegedly raped a freshman girl. now he's here to defend himself. 19-year-old owen labrie sat stoic as the teenage girl took the stand. she later wept as she identified the prep school senior. courtroom cameras did not show her face to protect her identity. prosecutors say he raped the freshman who was then 15 in a mechanical room in may 2014 as part of an ubds ground tradition called senior salute where graduating young men tried to have sex with freshmen students. >> do you remember how you received that invitation. >> over an e-mail. >> 'cording to the "associated
