spell. howard, looking to that. record flooding continues to bog down parts of the country, as the mississippi river continues to rise. flood waters have swallowed up homes in rural missouri and illinois, leaving at least 2 dozen people dead and several missing. >>reporter: the mississippi river is hitting record high levels in the state of missouri. but the giant flood wall that protects the city of cape gerard do is holding. outside of that wall, it is a much different story. in low-lying areas, the water cannot be stopped. >> has it ever seen nearly 50 feet of water? >> no, this is the most we've ever seen. >>reporter: we took a ride with steven cook and found vehicles nearly submerged. water street took on a whole new meaning in this street where homes and businesses have succumbs to the water. it was deaf stated by the so-called -- devastated by the so-called flood of 1993. they took a government buy outand left. those who stayed behind are now seeing flood waters even higher

than 93. >> this is one of the worst. >>reporter: on the other side of the mississippi river, bruce rouder says hundreds of homes in his state are underwater, and he's urging people in voluntary evacuation areas to leave. >> a flood in the winter? which is obviously very rare, very different than a summer flood, when it's 80 degrees outside. hypothermia, the big risk. folks here wading around their homes in knee-deep water. >>reporter: the flood water continues to recede in st. louis and major roadways are open again, but the high water is now headed south. and people in that area, are getting ready. cbs news, missouri. >> that flood threat could last through next week, the mississippi is expected to crest in memphis, tennessee january 9 ths. we now the name of the woman whose body was found along the northwest branch trail friday. she's katherine alvarado. police say the 20-year-old hyattsville woman suffered
