57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, we are learning more about the deadly bombings in brussels and the terrorists who carried them out. the suspected bomb maker is dead and another suspect is on the run. the attacks at the airport and at a metro station killed at least 32 people and injured about 300 others. more than 60 of the injured remain in intevensive care. it appears that the ones who carried out the attacks in paris carried out the brussels attack. indications indicate the bombers moved up their attack because it was close authorities were closing in. a third man seen with the two airport suicide bombers, kenneth craig is in brussels with more. >> reporter: this morning, we are also learning that a second attacker mls

that is according to belgianfri that he was seen on cc-tv cameras at the subway station carrying a large wbag. authorities are trying to track him down in addition to the man in the surveillance video. as the hunt for the man in the white jacket continues, belgian prosecutors are morning about the isis terrorists connected to two terror attacks in brussels. authorities believe these two blew themselves up at the airport and ibrahim's younger brother detonated himself on the subway. >> tuesday's attack here in brussels and the events in paris are renewing concerns about fighting isis

materials. >> kenneth craig in brussels, thanks a lot, kenneth. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will look at the technology being developed to detect homemade bombs like the ones used in brussels. we are joining now but elaine cobb in brussels with more on the investigation. elaine, good morning. we certainly learned a lot more about these terrorist attacks over the last 24 hours. how were authorities able to piece together this investigation? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. when belgian police, looking for abdeslam linked to the pair race attacks, raided an apartment in brussels last week, they found it was, in fact, rented by a man who was one of the two brothers who were the suicide bombers in the brussels attack. he blew himself at the subway station. they also then found a taxi driver who said he was pulled out by three men to take them to the airport. th

about their luggage. they didn't want him to touch it, so he called police after the attack and they then carried out that raid on the apartment where they found the kind of explosives that were also used in the paris attack. so they very much have been putting those two attacks together as links. >> we are also learning a lot more about one of the bombers. we know that he was already known to authorities. but we have also learned that he was deport from turkey. can you tell us more about that? >> reporter: yes. ibrahim bakraoui, his brother blew himself up at the airport, was known to police as a violent criminal but he hadn't been linked to terrorism in any way, neither had his brother, but turkey says that he was deported from there last year. the president of turkey said that they told belgian authorities that they didn't seem particularly concerned, so, in fact, he was deported to the nethnd

requested. now that is something the belgian authorities are saying that we had no reason to suspect anything at the time. but they did know that he had gone to syria in 2013 to join jihadists there. >> let's talk more about the big picture. a.p. is reporting that isis has trained 400 fighters to target europe. that certainly has to complicate things. >> reporter: yes, but this isn't really new. france is known for some time there are huge numbers of home-grown terrorists who go to syria and are being sent back. when abaaoud was back in paris to master mind the attacks last november, a woman said he told her he came in not with the other bombers for those attacks, but with 90 others ready to swarm a network that he could call on at any time in france and presumably in

linked. >> that is some disturbing news. elaine cobb in brussels, thanks a lot, elaine. at least a dozen americans were hurt in tuesday's attacks. the u.s. state department says it doesn't know if any americans were killed but some are still unaccounted for. >> the blast happened just in a matter of seconds. one minute, you know, they were there and then they weren't. and we have been searching and looking for them ever since. >> reporter: amid the chaos, sheila shell is getting new information about her son and his wife stephanie. the couple were dropping off stephanie's mother at the airport bombs went off. >> i keep waiting for the phone to ring but that call didn't come. >> reporter: on wednesday the family was plunged into confusion when at first they

located and on a list but that didn't meant if they had been hurt or killed. now they are being told the couple is still missing. justin's parents are heading to brussels to look for their son. >> he has been wanting me to come to brussels to see him but this is not the way that i wanted to go see him! >> reporter: also among the missing siblings alex and sasha pendowski and reportedly on the phone when the bomb rocked the airport's departure area. more is known about the three mormons who were injured in the blast. norby is a medically induced coma after surgery on his head and legs. meanwhile, the family of sebastian bellin, a michigan man injured in the attack, says he will undergo a second surgery and is facing a long road to recovery. the brussels attack prompted sharp debate on the campaign trail here in the u.s. senator ted cruz called for increased surveillance of muslims in th

donald trump, who has proposed a temporary ban on former muslims entering the united states, says he supported cruz's idea. late yesterday in california, hillary clinton denounced the two's plan. >> when ted cruz calls for treating american muslims like criminals and for racially profiling predominantly muslim neighborhoods, it's wrong, it's counterproductive, it's dangerous. >> clinton also put down trump's call to pull back from nato. breaking news in iraq this morning. the iraqi army is invading mosul right now to retake the city from isis. according to officials, iraqi forces have already taken several villages on the outskirts of the northern city. mosul is the second largest city in iraq and has been under is rule since 2014. this morning a powerful spring storm is expected to bring snow and heavy thunderstorms and hail from an area to then

yeah, it took several crews of firefighters, police, and nearly 25 hours, but the man who spent more than a day atop a seattle tree is on back on the ground this morning. known by his #man in the tree. he finally came down and was whisked to the hospital for medical help and a mental evaluation. one of baseball's larger than life characters has died. joe garagiola was a catcher like his boyhood buddy yogi berra. he went on to nearly six decades of broadcasting on big league games and the today show. joe garagiola was 90 years old. the golden warriors march their way to basketball history. they topped the l.a. clippers last night and improving their record to 64-7. with 11 games to go, they are on pace to set the nba mark to win in a season.
