this is the "cbs morning news." i'm anne-marie green. we have breaking news out of the middle east this morning. an egyptair passenger jet has been hijacked with americans on board. the airbus a320 was flying from alexandria, cairo -- to, rather, cairo when an unknown number of hijackers took control of the jet and flew it to the island of cyprus. holly williams is headed there. she joins us now on the phone. holly, good were monmorning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. we're seeing video that appears to show at least some of the passengers from that hijacked plane being released on the

the plane landed there just before 9:00 local time. as to how many passengers have been released, there is not much clarity at this point. local media in cyprus is saying that the hijacker or hijackers agreed to release all the women and children on board. they're saying that 30 to 40 people have been released. other media is reporting that 56 people have been released. we've also heard this morning saying that everyone on board has been released with the exception of the cabin crew and four to five passengers. the reuters news agency is reporting that there were ten american citizens and eight british citizens on board. we can't ind pendly confirm this at this point, but we're working to do so. we're also hearing some reports about who the hijacker or one of the hijackers may be. egyptian state media is reporting that he is an egyptian citizen, and local media in cyprus is

have personal reasons for doing what he has done. they are saying that he has an ex-wife who is in cyprus. once again, we cannot confirm that. but certainly this incident will bring back memories of the passenger jet that was brought down last october apparently by a bomb. it was en route from sharm el-sheikh to st. petersburg. isis took responsibility for that attack that killed more than 220 people and certainly raised questions about security in egyptian airports. anne-marie? >> clearly a lot is in flux now. it's very early in this incident. holly williams, thank you very much. we're going to bring in cbs news senior national security consultant juan zarate now. juan, we now know that there were americans on board. give us a sense of what may be going on behind the scenes to resolve this situation. >> well, anne-marie, certainly the cypriot authorities are

ground, working with egyptian authorities as well to try and understand who this hijacker or hijackers are but also to try to communicate with them directly and try to defuse the situation. as holly describes, we've had passengers released. that's very good news. what's troubling here is the fact that they've kept crew members on board and a certain number of passengers. and you worry that those passengers may be westerners. but no doubt they're trying to defuse the situation. certainly in washington, you're going to have people scrambling to understand what this is about, what americans may be at risk, and if this is part of some broader terrorist attack. it doesn't appear to be so given what holly has reported and what is in the media currently. but certainly authorities aren't going to take any chances given the current environment. >> yeah, i wanted to ask you about that. we're getting a number of different types of reports, but one is that possibly the hijacker may be seeking

in cyprus. does that alter things at all in terms of the response? >> it does. it potentially defuses things a bit more. it gives the negotiators something else to work with, and it certainly alleviates the concern that this is part of a broader, more violent attempt at a hijacking. every hijacking is dangerous, of course, but you've had historically different types of hijackings. you've had individuals with their own motivations, often personal taking over aircraft. that's been over the course of decades. you've had individuals and groups for political reasons trying to make political points, taking over planes and hijacking without harming individuals. and then you've had a variety of violent hijackings that have resulted in the death of those passengers or those involved in the hijacking itself. and so hijackings take various

forms. you often want them to be defused quickly. and if it turns out this is one singular hijacker and he's motivated by personal issues, that's potentially the better situation than obviously a more violent and intended plotted attack to use a hijacking for more vieolent purposes. >> certainly hope that is the case. juan, thank you very much. we'll have a lot more on this egyptair hijacking a little later on this morning on "cbs this morning." now, there's been a major blow to the investigation into the brussels terrorist attacks. elaine cobb is in brussels with the details. good morning, elaine. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. belgian police were forced to release a suspect they had charged in connection with the bombings and admit they're back to square one in their efforts to capture a fugitive known as the man in the hat. last thursday they picked up this man, freelance journalist

faycal cheffou, he was charged with terrorism and murder. his home was searched but no weapons found. he was released yesterday due to lack of evidence. his lawyer says he had a telephone alibi, and police checks proved he was not the same size as the suspected third airport bomber, the man in the hat. belgian police have now posted video of the unidentified suspect, asking for the public's help. police found two gloves on a bus shortly after the bombing with traces of the same explosives on them. tensions remain high in brussels with heightened security. european union officers will reopen today following the easter break. brussels airport remains closed. the brussels bombings killed 35 people. more than 300 were injured. 100 of them still in the hospital. the bombs the terrorists used were described this morning as a satanic cocktail of nails and nail varnish

anne-marie? >> elaine cobbe in brussels, thank you very much. the showdown between the federal government and apple appears to be over, at least for now. the fbi says it was able to hack into an iphone belonging to the san bernardino shooter without the help of the tech company. but the bigger face-off over whether companies are obligated to assist the government still hasn't been settled. don champion is here in new york with more on that. good morning, don. >> good morning, anne-marie. apple says it was looking out for the privacy interests of its customers when it refused to comply with the government, but the fbi's ability to hack into the encrypted iphone raises new questions about the security of apple's biggest-selling device. >> reporter: the fbi won't say who helped it hack into the iphone belonging to syed farook who along with his wife killed 14 people in san bernardino last year. the government revealed in a court filing monday that it gained access to the phone without apple's assistance and is no longer asking the court to

investigators would only say the testing was carried out by highly skilled personnel and that the investigation of the phone's data is ongoing. >> we don't know how they did this, and we don't even know who the fbi is working with. >> reporter: the government's request for help was met with stiff resistance from apple. ceo tim cook argues that helping the fbi would set a precedent if it created a so-called backdoor that would allow investigators to gain access to the iphone. >> we have a responsibility to help you protect your data and protect your privacy. >> reporter: the iphone 5c running apple's os9 system was issued to farook by his employer, san bernardino county. after the shooting, they could not crass the phone's pass code. the agency asked for apple's help, saying it was the only way to gain access to the data. california congressman darrell issa is critical of the way the
