and danny willett wins it. jordan spieth gives you up the lead and the green jacket at the masters. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. police have a man in custody suspected of gunning down former new orleans saints player will smith. don champion is here in new york with more. >> reporter: the killing has rippled through the sports world. smith was admired by fellow athletes and loved by his hands for bringing a super bowl championship to new orleans. this morning, police are calling his death a case of road rage. a black and yell tribute now marks the spot where former new orleans state defensive end will smith lost his life. >> no matter what the situation is, no one should ever pull a gun on somebody else. >> reporter: smith and his wife

saturday night when authorities say a his mercedes suv was rear-ended and then cardell hayes pulled a gun and shot smith to death. his wife was shot in the leg. >> while this is an isolated incident, it is certainly tragic on all levels on all sides. >> reporter: hayes said the confrontation started when his client's car was his first. >> my client pursued that vehicle in order to get the license plate number and in order to report an accident. >> reporter: before the shooting, smith had saints with former new orleans saints player pierre smith and an officer. he is one of the officer in a lawsuit against the city over the shooting of his father in 2005. >> i think this is the wrong place, wrong time. no way you can explain what

not yet determined whether that incident had anything to do with saturday's tragedy. smith and his wife have three children and his wife is expected to survive. hayes remains in jail on a $1 million bond. in a statement, nfl commissioner roger goodell wrote, this is such a tragic loss of life. meg? >> certainly. don champion in new york for us, thank you. a new poll out this morning, appears to spell trouble for republican presidential candidate donald trump. an associated president gfk poll more americans think hillary clinton will make america great again mp trthan trump. the poll believes that clinton represents their own views. 30% say trump does. now with the next primary just eight days away, candidates on both sides of the aisle have their sights set on that delegate-rich state. brian webb reports on the battle for new york. >> reporter: donald trump says there's something wrong with the way repubns

presidential nominee. >> we have got a corrupt system. it's not right. we are supposed to be a democracy. >> reporter: trump's campaign says ted cruz is using underhanded methods to pick up delegates loyal to the texas senator. cruz's campaign calls the accusations lies. he says he will be ready for a contest convention. >> you know, it's easy to talk about making america great again. but the real question is do you understand the principles and values that made america great in the first place? >> reporter: trump and hillary clinton both have double-digit leads in the polls in new york. clinton went to several churches sunday before campaigning in baltimore, where she slammed sanders' record on gun control. >> he voted to make it more difficult to shut down gun dealers who sold guns and ended up in criminals' hands. >> reporter: bernie sanders visited brooklyn's famed coney island. he is no longer questioning clinton's qualifications, just

war in iraq, a candidate who voted for virtually every disastrous trade policy which, of course, cost millions of jobs. >> reporter: the new york primary is april 19th. that was brian webb reporting. coming up on "cbs this morning," delegates 101. what happens if no candidate earns enough delegates leading to a contested convention? cbs news has learned a u.s. navy commander is facing espionage and other charges for allegedly sharing secrets with the foreign government. a source confirmed to cbs news the man is lieutenant commander edward lynn. the u.s. naval institute reports he served on some of the navy's most sensitive spy aircraft and allegedly passed information on u.s. national defense to china. overseas. investigators say the terrorists who attacked brussels last month originally planned to target france again. authorities say the extremists struck the belgian cit

instead of going back to france as police quickly closed in. the bronks in brussels killed 32 people. officials didn't provide details on the original target in france. the gan claim a rocket targeted u.s. secretary of state john kerry over the weekend. in afghanistan several rounds exploded about 650 feet from the u.s. embassy in kabul. the state department says the attack happened about an hour after kerry left the area. a u.s. official says there's no evidence that kerry was a target. this morning, in japan, kerry visited the memorial to the atomic bombing of hee rah sh hiroshima. he did not apologize for the u.s.'s actions during world war ii but spoke of peace and a vision of a nuclear-free world. police investigators arrived at a hindu temple in southern cuba this morning after a fireworks killed at least 110 people. a massive

after a fireworks display. apparently, ignited fireworks stored in a shed and that triggered powerful explosions as you can see. thousands were packed into the temple to mark the beginning of the local hindu new year. in addition to the dead, at least 380 others were injured. police detained at least five people responsible for the fireworks. dangerous storms are predicted to pummel parts of the southern u.s. today. severe thunderstorms will develop over south central states. eastern oklahoma, louisiana, arkansas, and east texas are at the greatest risk. the national weather service warns the storms may bring large hail, damaging winds, flash flooding, and isolated tornadoes. the final round of the masters ended in elation for an englishman and absolutely heartbreak for defending champion jordan spieth. the 22-year-old american was on cruise control. five strokes ahead, when the wheels fell off!

fairfax county parkway, still quiet both on the inbound and outbound lanes. weather and traffic back with an update shortly. back to you. breaking overnight, streets in maryland are shut down following a police-involved shooting. >> that shooting happened before 11:30 at the innews food international market on fourth street. it started as a break in. police were able to catch one suspect trying to run away. they shot a second suspect. that person was taken to med star. no word on their condition. the director of the cia says the intelligence agency will not engage in enhanced enter row gas station practices, even if a future president wants them to. the cia used techniques including water boarding on suspected terrorists after the 9/11 attacks. but the agency says it stopped water boarding in 2003. two current presidential

ted cruz have supported the use of water boarding. some immigrant children are blocked from registering for public school in the united states according to researchers at georgetown. laws require any child here legally or not to attend school through the 8th grade or until they turn 16. some school districts in florida, new york, texas and north carolina have such complicated filing rules they effectively keep them out of schools. today colorado lawmakers will reexamine a new law that allows medical marijuana use in schools. the current law allows students who need medical marijuana to use edible pot at public schools as long as the school districts agree which none do. patient advocates want a law similar to the one in new jersey which requires schools to allow nurses or parents to administer medical pot. it's in trouble and more than 75 million miles from earth.
