>> reporter: donald trump told a crowd in indiana his rival, ted cruz, made history when he prematurely made history when he teamed one carly fiorina. >> he is the first presidential candidate in the history of this country who's mathematically eliminated from becoming president who chose a vice presidential candidate, okay. >> reporter: cruz announced fiorina as a running mate after losing five states to donald trump tuesday night. >> ted cruz's purpose, my purpose, is to unify the party pie talking about the things that matter. >> reporter: trump stuck on the issues earlier wednesday delivering a foreign policy speech to an invited audience in washington. the republican and democratic front-runners are trying to switch from primary mode to the general election and are also targeting one another. clinton is taking exception to trump's comment that she played the woman card. >> if fighting for women's health care and paid family leave and equal pay is playing the n

>> reporter: bernie sanders' campaign laid off hundreds of field staffers wednesday, but he's not giving up. >> you know what, unusual things happen in politics. >> reporter: sanders' aides say they're using most of their resources on winning california in june. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. coming up on "cbs this morning," cbs news contributor and "wall street journal" columnist peggy noonan has analysis. baltimore police shot a 13-year-old boy who they say refused to drop what turned out to be a replica of a semiautomatic pistol. two detectives saw the teen carrying what appeared to be a gun. after identifying themselves, the teen took off running. when police caught up, the teen refused it drop it. one detective shot the boy in the leg and arm. the police commissioner said they acted appropriately. the teen is expected to survive. an american airlines flight bound for dallas turned around following a bird strike during takeoff.

passengers and six crew aboard safely landed back in seattle yesterday. the strike involving at least two birds caused this nearly two-foot crater in the plane's nose. a newly released federal complaint claims a jetblue pilot flew from orlando to new york while under the influence of alcohol. the complaint alleges a random alcohol test last year revealed dennis murphy jr. had a blood alcohol level of 0 .11, nearly three times the legal limit for pilots. if convicted, he could be sentenced to 15 years in prison. breaking overnight, air strikes in syria hit a hospital and leveled buildings in the city of aleppo. at least 20 civilians were killed. rescuers searched through the rubble for survivors and rushed victims to other hospitals. the syrian opposition blames syrian president bashar al assad's forces for the deadly attacks. another day will bring even

to the southeast. large hail and damaging winds are the main threat. yesterday's outbreak brought this explosive super-cell thunderstorm that spawn a tornado over northeast missouri. the national weather service received reports of 14 tornadoes in parts of the midwest and kentucky yesterday. the storm also brought hail to many midwestern states, including outside of omaha. eric fisher of our boston station, wbz, has more. >> reporter: a busy week of severe weather continues. we're watching the next storm system starting to dig in to the west. we're talking about thunderstorms today. that threat will go up heading into friday. the next trough digging into the plains. again, we'll be watching oklahoma and texas. here's a look at the next couple of days as we head through thursday. our severe weather doesn't start going until later on in the evening and to the overnight. we'll be watching parts of north texas into oklahoma. that area will continue to dep

i'll have one round of thunderstorms moving up into arkansas. then as we head into friday afternoon, the next round of thunderstorms develops. these look a little bit more vigorous. large hail, gusty winds. tornadoes possible here. the areas to watch, highest risk of severe storms on thursday evening, mainly across the red river valley and to north texas. then friday should be a more active day. this will be the one to watch. also, heavier rainfall, and that extending from san antonio up to just about oklahoma city. we'll keep you updated. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. a judge sentenced former house speaker dennis hastert to 15 months in prison in a hush-money case in which he tried to keep his dark past as a child molester secret. as dean reynolds report, prosecutors could not charge him with sex crimes because of the statute of limitations. it had run out. >> reporter: withered and wheelchair-bound, former speaker of the house dennis hastert came to federal court for a public shaming he'd brought on himself.

finally admit he had molested boys on the yorkville high school wrestling team he coached decades ago. "what i did was wrong," he said, "and i regret it." the judge suggested that was not enough. "nothing is more stunning than having serial child molester and speaker of the house in the same sentence," the judge said. zachary farden is the u.s. attorney. >> mr. hastert's legend and legacy are gone, and in its place are a broken, humiliated man. that it as it should be. >> reporter: six months ago, hastert pleaded guilty to violating banking laws by repeatedly making large cash withdrawals. his undoing began in 2014 when he told the fbi he was keeping the money, though it was actually going to one of his victims known as individual a, as a kind of compensation for his misdeeds. hastert lied again when he s

individual a was blackmailing him. a claim the judge called an unconscionable attempt to victimize a victim one more time. individual a was 14 when the abuse started. hastert was forced to face his accusers this time. another victim, scott cross, who is now 53, tearfully recalled a lifelong trauma from being abused by his coach at the age of 17. "it was my darkest secret," he said. "i was devastated." jolene burge testified on behalf of her brother, steven reinbolt, who died of aids after telling him hastert had abused him throughout high school. "you were supposed to keep him safe, not violate him," she said. sources reveal to cbs news that investigators looking into prince's death asked the u.s. drug enforcement agency for help. investigators want to know what painkillers the pop icon was taking and where he got them. an autopsy was performed friday, but it will be weeks befe

results are released. and yesterday, a court appointed a trust company to oversee prince's multimillion dollar estate and manage his businesses. so far, no will has turned up. his sister claims the singer did not have one. >> we have decided after spending three or four days together now grieving over the loss of prince that we would like to come out and do some shows. >> meanwhile, members of the revolution announced in a facebook video that they are reuniting. the band, including wendy and lisa, rose to fame when they backed prince in his 1984 hit "purple rain." they said the shows will happen soon, but they didn't provide any specifics. coming up on "the morning news," bathroom battle. a city in alabama calls for jail time for transgender people who violate a new bathroom ordinance. police identify a teenager murdered nearly 50 years ago, initially believed to be a victim of the manson family. this is the "cbs morning news."

>> whirling winds turn a quiet afternoon to chaos on hawaii's big island. the gusts sent umbrellas soaring and sun worshippers scurrying monday. the weather service says it was the sandy equivalent of a dust devil. there's new information on a cold case initially linked to the manson family. and a former tulsa reserve deputy found guilty of killing an unarmed man. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the conviction of a former sheriff's deputy who killed a suspect last year. 74-year-old robert bates was found guilty of manslaughter. he said he meant to use his stun gun instead a handgun. the "los angeles times" reports that no link has been found between the manson family and killing of a canadian teenager in

the woman's body was found near the scene of other killings that year by charles manson and his followers. investigators say they questioned manson in prison about the case but learned nothing. a "charlotte observer" columnist describes a takeoff that was aborted yesterday to avoid a collision. the rider was on a delta jet headed to miami from atlanta. it stopped suddenly before liftoff because another plane crossed its path on the runway. no one was hurt. the columnist says the pilot announced that air traffic controllers had made a mistake. the associated press reports a plan that would require women to register for the military draft. the measure was passed yesterday by a house panel. its sponsor voted against the plan saying he opposes sending women into combat and wanted to spark debate about it. al.com reports that an alabama city is the first in the nation to pass a gender restriction law for public bathrooms. the o

>> reporter: good morning. as widely expected, the federal reserve decided to hold key interest rates steady. policymakers announced it will keep the rate unchanged at the end of a two-day meeting yesterday afternoon. the fed noted while the question is adding jobs, economic activity is slowing. the fed's decision appeared to have little impact on wall street. the dow jones gained 51 points. the s&p 500 added three. the nasdaq shed 25 points. facebook is creating a new class of nonvoting stock. the class-c capital stock would allow co-founder and ceo mark zuckerberg to keep his firm control of the company while raising more cash to compensate employees and investors. the social media behemoth reported earnings yesterday of $1.51 billion, nearly triple what it earned during the same period last year. yahoo! reached a deal with activist nor star board value which has been pushing the company to revamp its
