>> reporter: bernie sanders' campaign laid off hundreds of field staffers wednesday, but he's not giving up. >> you know what, unusual things happen in politics. >> reporter: sanders' aides say they're using most of their resources on winning california in june. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. coming up on "cbs this morning," cbs news contributor and "wall street journal" columnist peggy noonan has analysis. baltimore police shot a 13-year-old boy who they say refused to drop what turned out to be a replica of a semiautomatic pistol. two detectives saw the teen carrying what appeared to be a gun. after identifying themselves, the teen took off running. when police caught up, the teen refused it drop it. one detective shot the boy in the leg and arm. the police commissioner said they acted appropriately. the teen is expected to survive. an american airlines flight bound for dallas turned around following a bird strike during takeoff.

passengers and six crew aboard safely landed back in seattle yesterday. the strike involving at least two birds caused this nearly two-foot crater in the plane's nose. a newly released federal complaint claims a jetblue pilot flew from orlando to new york while under the influence of alcohol. the complaint alleges a random alcohol test last year revealed dennis murphy jr. had a blood alcohol level of 0 .11, nearly three times the legal limit for pilots. if convicted, he could be sentenced to 15 years in prison. breaking overnight, air strikes in syria hit a hospital and leveled buildings in the city of aleppo. at least 20 civilians were killed. rescuers searched through the rubble for survivors and rushed victims to other hospitals. the syrian opposition blames syrian president bashar al assad's forces for the deadly attacks. another day will bring even

to the southeast. large hail and damaging winds are the main threat. yesterday's outbreak brought this explosive super-cell thunderstorm that spawn a tornado over northeast missouri. the national weather service received reports of 14 tornadoes in parts of the midwest and kentucky yesterday. the storm also brought hail to many midwestern states, including outside of omaha. eric fisher of our boston station, wbz, has more. >> reporter: a busy week of severe weather continues. we're watching the next storm system starting to dig in to the west. we're talking about thunderstorms today. that threat will go up heading into friday. the next trough digging into the plains. again, we'll be watching oklahoma and texas. here's a look at the next couple of days as we head through thursday. our severe weather doesn't start going until later on in the evening and to the overnight. we'll be watching parts of north texas into oklahoma. that area will continue to dep

i'll have one round of thunderstorms moving up into arkansas. then as we head into friday afternoon, the next round of thunderstorms develops. these look a little bit more vigorous. large hail, gusty winds. tornadoes possible here. the areas to watch, highest risk of severe storms on thursday evening, mainly across the red river valley and to north texas. then friday should be a more active day. this will be the one to watch. also, heavier rainfall, and that extending from san antonio up to just about oklahoma city. we'll keep you updated. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. a judge sentenced former house speaker dennis hastert to 15 months in prison in a hush-money case in which he tried to keep his dark past as a child molester secret. as dean reynolds report, prosecutors could not charge him with sex crimes because of the statute of limitations. it had run out. >> reporter: withered and wheelchair-bound, former speaker of the house dennis hastert came to federal court for a public shaming he'd brought on himself.

finally admit he had molested boys on the yorkville high school wrestling team he coached decades ago. "what i did was wrong," he said, "and i regret it." the judge suggested that was not enough. "nothing is more stunning than having serial child molester and speaker of the house in the same sentence," the judge said. zachary farden is the u.s. attorney. >> mr. hastert's legend and legacy are gone, and in its place are a broken, humiliated man. that it as it should be. >> reporter: six months ago, hastert pleaded guilty to violating banking laws by repeatedly making large cash withdrawals. his undoing began in 2014 when he told the fbi he was keeping the money, though it was actually going to one of his victims known as individual a, as a kind of compensation for his misdeeds. hastert lied again when he s

individual a was blackmailing him. a claim the judge called an unconscionable attempt to victimize a victim one more time. individual a was 14 when the abuse started. hastert was forced to face his accusers this time. another victim, scott cross, who is now 53, tearfully recalled a lifelong trauma from being abused by his coach at the age of 17. "it was my darkest secret," he said. "i was devastated." jolene burge testified on behalf of her brother, steven reinbolt, who died of aids after telling him hastert had abused him throughout high school. "you were supposed to keep him safe, not violate him," she said. sources reveal to cbs news that investigators looking into prince's death asked the u.s. drug enforcement agency for help. investigators want to know what painkillers the pop icon was taking and where he got them. an autopsy was performed friday, but it will be weeks befe
