the number-one pick of no surprise, but something on the top prospect's twitter feed surprised even him and sent his draft stock sliding. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, a protest outside a donald trump campaign event turned violent in california. thousands of anti-trump demonstrators and trump supporters in orange county clashed over the candidate's immigration policies, particularly his call to build a wall to separate the u.s. from mexico. police in riot gear and on horseback formed a barrier between the two groups. some police cars were damaged. about 20 people were arrested. brook silva-bragga has more. >> reporter: police made about 20 arrests last night. trump is likely to spend a lot of time inal

he needs to win the state to secure the republican nomination before the convention. it could be a tense five weeks between now and their june 7 primary. anti-donald trump protesters clashed with police outside an amphitheater in costa mesa, california, late thursday night. some in the crowd held "dump trump" signs as a blocked traffic. others took their frustrations out on a police car. the protests come as trump turns his attention to delegate-rich california in a bid to secure a general election match-up with hillary clinton. she shouldn't be allowed to run because what's happened with that whole e-mail scandal is an absolute disgrace. >> reporter: rival ted cruz remains focused on indiana. yesterday he denied entering into an alliance with john kasich to win the state. >> i recognize that the media's eager to talk about an alliance. there is no alliance. >> reporter: despite agreeing ton campaign in indiana, kasich got a boost from the largest daily newspaper, "the indianapolis star," calling the potential trump presidency a

danger to the u.s. and the world saying kasich is the best choice for gop primary voters. the star also supported hillary clinton saying she was the best democratic choice. the bernie sanders campaign is focusing its energy almost exclusively on california. anne-marie? >> brooks silva-braga, thanks a lot. at a forum wednesday night at stanford university, former house speaker john boehner told the audience how he really feels it republican presidential candidate ted cruz. >> lucifer in the flesh. substance sparked an alert at the trump tower. it was harmless. trump wasn't there at the time. in march, a letter containing a white powder and threatening note was sent to the manhattan apartment of trump's son. in baltimore, a scare there. this one at one of the city's television stations. police shot a man after he walked inside the building wearing an animal costume and claimed he had a bomb. as craig boswell report, the bomb turned out to be something more inokay use. >> reporter: police shot the suspect addressed in a panda outside the fox affiliate after commands to stop and show his hands. employees say the incident began shortly after 1:00 p.m. thursday when a car in the parking lot of set on fire, and the suspect demanded to be let inside the television station. >> wearing a surgical mask and sunglasses, and he had a flash drive that he said he wanted to give the information from the flash drive on the air. >> reporter: the suspect claimed he had a bomb strapped to his

chocolate candy bars wrapped in aluminum foil with wiring connecting each of them. >> reporter: a security guard evacuated the building and kept the man contained in an outer vest public scho vestibule before he walked out. >> i told him i couldn't let him out, but i'd do what i could to help him out. >> reporter: station employees are calling the security guard a hero. >> he takes his job very seriously. god bless him for it. >> he was calm, cool, and collected. >> reporter: the suspect was loaded into an ambulance and take nn to the hospital. he is expected to survive. cbs news, baltimore. today, severe weather takes aim at the southern u.s. yesterday's outbreak spawned a tornado in indiana that damaged two homes. storms elsewhere brought golf ball-sized hail and damaging winds. eric fisher, chief meteorologist of our boston station, wbz, is tracking weather. it's been a stormy week, and thto

the focus mainly across the southern plains into oklahoma and texas. some storms moving into arkansas. the main threat looks to be heavy rain, damaging winds, and hail. a few tornadoes also possible. and it comes in a couple of ways. we have one area of storms ongoing from yesterday, rolling east through the morning hours, heading over into arkansas. locally heavy rainfall. then another round of storms develops as we head toward the afternoon and evening. starting to light up around the dallas area, heading over again into arkansas. we could see a few spots of flash flooding. that cluster moves eastward overnight. stay aware. coast to coast, warm in southeast. atlanta near 90. cool in the northeast. boston at 50. cold in the intermountain west. the denver area expect being a half foot of snow this friday. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. have a great weekend. vice president jonesboro is -- biden is

to cancer, describing how his project moonshot would work by partnering with researchers around the globe. his son died of cancer last year. the vice president also meets with pope francis. before traveling to rome, biden made an unannounced visit to iraq. he spent it eight hours meeting with iraqi and kurdish leaders. biden said the u.s. and iraq are making "real progress" in the fight against isis, and reaffirmed america's commitment to defeat the terror group. in california, three people with close family ties to the san bernardino attackers pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit marriage fraud. the brother of one of the shooters, his wife, and her sister are accused of working together to maintain a sham marriage. the charge unrelated to the december shooting that left 14 people dead. all three pleaded not guilty yesterday afternoon in federal court. the united states and united nations condemned air strikes and shelling that killed dozens in the city of aleap over now

two-month-old cease-fire which has collapsed. activists say more than 60 died in a 24-hour period. some of the deaths came when an air strike demolished a doctors without borders-supported children's hospital in a rebel-held area of the city. investigators are now looking at when pop icon prince died of a drug overdose. a law enforcement source tells the associated press investigators are trying to find out if a doctor was prescribing him drugs in the weeks leading up to his death. painkillers were found in prince's home where he died. investigators are also trying to find out if a doctor was aboard prince's plane when it made an emergency landing earlier this month. a drug test led to a high-profile suspension in big league baseball. dee gordon of the miami marlins must sit out 80 games after he tested positive for two performance-enhancing drugs. thco

"the new york times" reports that new u.s. military aid for israel is being slowed by a disagreement by the nations' leaders. it could top $40 million, the largest deal granted by the u.s. to another nation. israel is holding out for more generous terms for the aid package. "the seattle times" reports that mexican police expect to capture a pair of murder suspects within days. police believe john and tony reed fled south after killing a washington state couple earlier this month.

"the denver post" reports testimony about the mental state of the suspect in an attack at a planned parenthood clinic. a psychologist yesterday said robert deere is delusional and not competent to stand trial. he's accused of killing three people at a colorado springs clinic last november. "the charlotte observer" reports that the ncaa will require sites for sports championships to be free of bias. the policy would be tested in 2017 and 2018 when men's basketball tournament games scheduled in new york. a new law there limits anti-discrimination protections for gays and transgender people. "the daily beast" reports that will ferrell is being taken to task by the daughter of ronald reagan. the comedian plans to produce and star in a movie showing reagan suffering from alzheimer's. in an open letter, patti daif is tells ferrell,

the nasdaq dropped 5 points. the nation's largest cable company, comcast, is buying film company dreamworks animation in a $3.5 billion deal. dreamworks stockholder will get $31 per share, a 24% premium over the closing price. dreamworks created films like "shr "shrek" and "kung fu panned a." amazon reported much better than expected results. the net income exceeded a half billion dollars in the first three months of the year compared to a loss the same time last year. amazon shares jumped 12% in extended trading. fiat chrysler and google are in advanced to talks to put self-driving cars on the road. the conversations confirmed by the associated press.
