more about the victims killed inside the club. the people who made it out alive, and the killer's ties to terrorism. >> although it's still early in the investigation, we know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate. as americans we are united in grief, outrage, and in resolve to defend our people. good morning from the studio 57 nutritional at cbs news headquarters in new york, i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. it is an unimaginable slaughter. the massacre at a gay nightclub in orlando is the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. here's what we know this morning -- at least 50 people were killed, another 53 wounded or injured in critical condition. the gunman is 29-year-old omar mateen. heapleged allegiance to isis in a 911 call early sunday morning. isis says an islamic state fighterr

so far there's no indication isis planned the attack or had direct communication with mateen. mateen had been investigated twice by the fbi for possible terrorist ties but of cleared. kenneth craig is in orlando outside the pulse nightclub. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, meg. it's been just about 24 hours since this unfolded. you see authorities very much have the entire area blocked off as they go through the club room by room trying to identify the dead. one by one the bodies of the victims were hauled away from the pulse nightclub sunday night. earlier, anxious family members sobbed as they learned the fate of their loved ones. police say 29-year-old omar mateen, armed with an ar-15 semiautomatic assault rifle and a handgun, opened fire in the crowded gay club around 2:00 sunday morning. clubgoer sean roister escaped

>> t wheyere checking bodies, people that were wounded, just to get them out of the way. probably the worst thing i've felt in my entire life. >> reporter: the fbi is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism after mateen went into a club bathroom and called 911 to pledge his allegiance to isis before he started shooting. >> the fbi became aware of mateen in 2013 when he made inflammatory comments to co-workers alleging possible terrorist ties. >> reporter: the fbi looked at him again in 2014 to investigate potential ties to an american suicide bomber in syria. the agency says it closed both investigations because mateen did not pose a threat at the time. the bureau of atf said he legally bought the guns used in the massacre. >> he purchased two firearms, a handgun and long gun. >> reporter: the shooter's ex-wife told reporters she left her marr a

mentally ill. >> reporter: authorities will release the names of more victims today. so far about 15 of the 50 people killed have been identified. they range from 20 to 50 years old. meg? >> so young. kenneth craig in orlando for us. thank you. omar mateen's family is from afghanistan. it's reported his father appears on an afghan television show known for its anti-u.s. tirades. his parents say mateen was outraged after seeing two men kiss. police found no explosives when they searched mateen's home. jeff pegues with more. >> reporter: we're learning more about the 911 call omar mateen made during the mass shooting. he made the call from the bathroom of the nightclub, then a source says dispatchers for some reason had to call him back. during the second call, he pledged his allegiance to isis and made reference to

carried out the boston bombing. mateen was born in new york to afghan parents. he was living in ft. pierce, florida, and has been married. he was also on the fbi's radar. in 2013, co-workers said that he made inflammatory remarks about terrorist ties. the fbi looked into that. there were interviews with witnesses and surveillance. in the end, this inquiry was closed. then in 2014, he came to the fbi's attention again. this time because of ties to the first known american suicide bomber in syria. he blew himself up in 2014. after that probe, mateen was cleared again. mateen had been working as a security guard and with no record, in the last week he was able to purchase a handgun and the ar-15 assault rifle that police believe he used to kill and injure more than 100 people. jeff

washington. we're learning more about some of the orlando victims. hena daniels is here in new york with their stories. >> reporter: good morning. more than 300 patrons packed the pulse nightclub early sunday morning, there to have a good time. dozenses ending up as victims in a massacre. 34-year-old edward sotomayor, known as a caring and energetic man, worked for a company that held gay cruises. 23-year-old stanley almadovar was a tech investor relations. juan guerrero, 22, worked as a telemarketer and had just started college. luis villema, also 22 years old, worked at run is versal studios and was known for his warm demeanor. kimberly morris, 37, moved to orlando a few months ago and had just taken a job as a bouncer at pulse. during the attack, nina justice got a text from her son, eddie. >> he texted me at 2:06 and said, m

in the club there's shooting, that was at 2:06. trapped in the bathroom downtown. please call police. i'm going to die. call them mama now. i'm telling -- i'm in the bathroom. he's coming. i'm going to die. >> reporter: we learned this morning that eddie justice did not make it. now these are names some of the other victims that are slowly being identified. authorities are asking for patience as they notify next of kin. >> gut wrenching for families. our thoughts and prayers go out to them. thank you. a man who was inside the nightclub when the shooting started saved his life by fleeing and hiding under a truck parked outside. sean roister described the horror to scott

>> reporter: your friend who was taken to the hospital, so how me? >> i am coming back to the hospital, and last time i checked he was in surgery. he was hit pretty bad. i know two times in the back. one in the back, once in the hand. and with all the mass commotion of everybody running around, he got trampled. so he also broke his left leg. and that's just one person. there was people outside. i couldn't imagine to see what the mayhem was on the inside to be honest. i just know it was bad. the way that they were coming out, the ones close to me that were coming out. i'm happy that i was that way. unharmed and stuff. at the same time, i feel bad. there were so many people -- so many people. >> reporter: did it seem like it was ever going to end? >> no, it didn't seem real actually. you see that on tv and the movies. i can't say it would never happen to anybody, but i

[ gunfire ] >> reporter: the worst mass shooting in u.s. history immediately reignited heated political debates over terrorism and gun control. presumptive republican nominee donald trump reiterated his call to ban muslims from entering the u.s. even though omar mateen was born in new york. and in a statement trump criticized the president saying, "he disgracefully refused to say the words radical islam. for that reason alone, he should step down. if hillary clinton after this attack still cannot say the two words "radical islam," she should get out of this race for the presidency." neither obama nor clinton were ready to link the attack to extremism. clinton said, "we need to redouble our efforts to defend our country from threats at home and aabroad" and told the lgbt community, "we will continue to fight to keep your right to life freely, openly and without

>> officers immediately noticed there was a rifle in the seat of the car which led to a further investigation at which point we recovered additional firearms, high-capacity magazines, officers did find some chemicals that could have been used for an improvised explosive device. the suspect did make an initial statement to the effect that he was going to go to the pride festival. beyond that, he did not make any additional statements saying that he was going do anything further than that. >> as we march in the streets today under gray skies and as we take a moment of silence to grieve together before the parade begins, our hearts will be heavy, but our resolve will be strong. >> reporter: cbs news, los angeles. the orlando tragedy prompted hundreds of new yorkers to gather at a historic manhattan bar. many mourners left flowers yesterday during a vigil at the stonewall inn. >> this wasn't just an attack on the
