omar mateen went on a deadly shooting spree inside the pulse nightclub in orlando. miguel leiva was shot multiple times. >> we tried to keep everybody calm and quiet so he wouldn't come back and the shoot at us. >> reporter: president obama and vice president joe biden left 49 white roses to honor the dead at a memorial. >> we will not be able to stop every tragedy. we can't wipe away hatred and evil from every heart in this world, but we can stop some tragedies. we can save some lives. >> reporter: nearly two dozen victims are still hospitalized. one is angel colon, shot six times and one of the last to get out. >> my name is officer omar delgado. i'm one of the ones that helped you get out of harm's way. >> reporter: thursday he met his hero, omar del.

the officer who risked his life and pulled him to safety. >> i saw him with his glasses -- like, help me, please. >> reporter: funeral services for the victims will continue throughout the weekend. >> marlie hall in orlando, thank you very much. the orlando gunman, omar mateen, contacted his wife during the attack. as jeff pegues reports, concerned employees at one gun store contacted the fbi after mateen tried to shop there but didn't know his name. >> reporter: gun storeowner robert able says in the weeks before the orlando shooting, omar mateen tried to buy body armor at his gun shop. mateen was told the store didn't sell body armor. >> at this time, he pulled away and got on to the cell phone. when he was on his cell phone, he had a conversation in a foreign language that was more concerning. then he came back and was requesting ammo. >> reporter: able says his employees were so concerned they

called the fbi. authorities say the gun store was not able to provide them with a name. on the night of the shoork an official familiar with mateen, he said he was active on social media before and during the rampage. he posted on facebook prior to the shooting "alliance to isis leader baghdadi." then he paused and searched for pulse orlando and shooting, perhaps to see if the massacre was trending on line. he also called 911 and to a television station about the ongoing shooting. investigators are focusing on what role mateen's wife might have played in the attack. she has been cooperating. officials believe she had some knowledge of an attack and will likely face some charge. school records show that omar mateen was a troubled child and a disciplinary problem. he was suspended for

days while in high school. most were for fighting and other rule violations. in an application for a college criminal justice program, mateen wrote that he wanted a career in law enforcement as far back as 2004. he wrote that in ninth grade, "i got into a fight with a fellow student in class. i was expelled." he admit he had been arrested and the subject of a criminal investigation but did not elaborate. he also admit to using marijuana and steroids. in 2007, mateen was dismissed from a job at the florida department of corrections. it is unclear why. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. the state department is reviewing a cable signed by 51 mostly mid level diplomats sharply criticizing u.s. policy in syria. the cable urges air strikes against the assad regime to force the syrian government into accepting a cease-fire. as many as half a million people have died in the syrian civil war. a section of the cab

"the new york times" reads, "the moral rationale for taking steps to end the deaths and suffering in syria after five years of brutal war is evident and unquestionable." overseas, the first member of the british parliament to be killed in a quarter century is being remembered. jo cox was a lawmaker who campaigned for britain to stay in the european union. the critical vote is scheduled for next week. investigators are trying to determine whether it played a role in her death. jonathan vigliotti with our report. >> reporter: police tackled the gunman identified as 52-year-old tommy maher and retrieved the gun. jo cox's purse and shoes were left in the street. british media quoted witnesses that claim maher rushed cox shouting "britain first." other witnesses said cox got caught in a fit between maher and another man. >> i saw him pulling the begin out. then he went live with it and fired one shot. >> reporter:ic
