♪ it's tuesday, july 5th, 2016, this is the "cbs morning news." journey to jupiter. breaking overnight, nasa making history sending a solar powered spacecraft into the orbit. fourth of july spectators in massachusetts got a show to remember when a barge explodes igniting all of the fire would at once. and let the battle begin. today, hillary clinton and donald trump both campaign in the battleground state of north carolina while clinton claims that

anti-semitic. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york, good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, nasa's juno spacecraft is orbiting jupiter. it's the end of a 5.8 billion mile journey, and if all goes it's to discover the mystery of the planet. hanna daniels is here in new york with more on juno's arrival. good morning. >> good morning, nasa is celebrating with its history making mission. after traveling almost 2 billion miles, the solar spacecraft juno successfully began orbiting our solar system on independence day. nasa scientists cheered and gave each other high-fives as they

declared mission juno accomplished. >> we prepared a contingency procedure, and guess what, we don't need that anymore. >> reporter: the spinning solar-powered spacecraft successfully entered jupiter's orbit shortly before midnight after completing a 45-minute engine burn. the high stakes return allowed jupiter to slow itself down significantly and hit a target a few miles wide. >> a mission of this complexity to accomplish tonight is just truly amazing. >> to actually have it to know we can all go to bed tonight and not worry about what's going to happen tomorrow, it's pretty awesome. >> and lift just of the juno v to jupiter. >> reporter: nasa designed for an intense radiation belt and a ring of debris surrounding the planet. as juno unfolded it a

began capturing images of jupiter and the moon. over the next 20 months scientists plan to learn more about the solar system. and juno has several science instruments on board along with a current camera and three lego figurines. one is a livness of galileo and another jupiter. ann marie. officials are investigating a fourth of july fireworks failure in plymouth, massachusetts. fires started on two fireworks barges on the plymouth water front. the fireworks on one barge went off all at once and police say no one was jurisdiction. and if you watched the cbs broadcast you may have

something was askew. the annual fireworks that took place looked to take place. it turns out cbs aired footage from previous shows. hundreds on social media complained. cbs said, quote, it was the patriotic thing to do and apologized for the confusion. this morning police have arrested a man in the death of a college student. beau solomon was found in the river. he headphone and his shirt was missing. $200 was charged to his credit card in milan. his brother said solomon had beaten cancer and had hoped he would be a politician. >> aft over 15, 20 procedures growing up through his life and was able to overcome all of
