when they were ambushed by at least two snipers. the shooting began near the end of a protest over the fatal police shootings of black men in louisiana and minnesota. six other officers and a civilian were injured. police are questioning at least three alleged suspects and manuel bojorquez is in downtown dallas. what is the latest? >> reporter: some breaking news now. we are learning that the fourth suspect, a man who was holdup inside a parking garage not too far from we are has died of self-inflicted gunshot wound. he had apparently been exchanging gunfire with officers but we have learned he has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. you mentioned the gunfire erupted in downtown dallas with no warning, turning this place into a war zone and still very much referabsembling one right officials say the intent of the shooters was to kill as many officers as possible.

>> reporter: what was a peaceful protest by about 800 people turned into chaos. people marching at city hall ran for their lives as dozens of shots rang out. >> i was screaming run run, active shooter, run, run, run. >> reporter: police say this was a coordinated attack. >> at least two snipers from elevated positions, as the protest rally march ended, began firing upon our officers. ambush style. >> reporter: as the gunfire rang out, pole used their patrol cars for cover as they moved in to help wounded officers. >> we believe that the suspects were positioned themselves in a way to try ankle u late o

officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area. and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could. >> reporter: the search for the gunmen moved through downtown from buildings to restaurants, businesses, and hotels. several of the wounded are in critical condition. one of the suspects is a woman taken into custody at the same garage where the shooting began. two others were grabbed during a traffic stop after they threw a suspicious package out the window. >> i ask everybody to focus on one thing right now, and that is dallas police officers, their families, those that are deceased, those that are in the hopital fighting for their lives. >> reporter: downtown dallas still very much an active crime scene. that is because that final suspect who apparently has shot himself now did tell police, "the end is near."

throughout the city. police still trying to clear all of this up right now. four of the fallen officers are with the dallas police officer. one was with dallas area rapid transit. >> manuel, in the video there you can hear the gunfire quite loud. i know you were blocks away. what did you hear and what did you see? >> reporter: i can tell you live not too far from here. from my balcony, i could see the protesters. this was during the peaceful part of the march. several hundreds of them just marching. and then just a few minutes later, what i heard was one police car after another and it wasn't just crowd control, it was very clear that this was something else. that's when i went downstairs and immediately started trying to see what was going on and we were learning that several shots were fired. what witnesses have described as a barrage of fire, what sounded like a war zone. at that point, police were still very much not only trying to attend to the wounded officers

and get people to safety and moving the perimeter back more and more once they gaejengaged the one suspect in the parking garage and continued to exchange shots with officers. at this point, as we understand it, that suspect has killed himself but the situation is still very fluid here in downtown dallas. >> just a massive crime scene there. manuel bojorquez in dallas, thank you so much. among those wounded by sniper fire, a woman who was with her children at last night's demonstration in dallas. her sister was waiting at the hospital where she was being treated. >> her and her boys were down at the rally. saying it was a very peaceful rally and they were enjoying it and the rally was just ending. as the rally was ending and they turned to leave, they were one of the first crowds to leave, they began to hear the first gunshot and didn't think much of it, or it was just like what was that? and after that first gunshot, she heard the second gunshot and after that,

gunshots. so they just came so fast and they wouldn't stop. they all began to run, scatter. she she said as she started to run, she caught a bullet in the back of her right leg. she immediately jumped on one of her boys, the 15-year-old. she jued on top to cover him on the ground as she pushed him n between two cars and the curb. her other three boys scattered and ran in opposite direction, so she lost three of her boys, danny know where they were. she laid there. she said it was about five minutes before cops even got to her and pulled her from the area where she was because the shots were coming so fast. not even realizing she was really shot at the time. >> reporter: she was shielding her son for five minutes? >> for five minutes before anybody got to her and was able to pull her away. >> reporter: what did she tell you about that moment where she was covering her child and the shots were being fired? >> all she could think about was her other three boys, where are they at.

from this woman and her sister. her sister has a very special message for police. one of the wounded officers is a six-year veteran of the city's transit police force. misty mcbride is being treated for two gunshot wounds at baylor university medical center. she is expected to survive. her father and her 10-year-old daughter visited her there. >> i was just happy that she was okay. that she can live on to tomorrow and that i'm just glad that she is alive, really. >> reporter: what did you say to her? >> i said that, "i love you and that i'm glad you're here." >> reporter: tell us what happened again. >> she just realized that when she got shot, that she fell over and turned around andta

the other officers got her and put her in the car and brought her over here. >> reporter: where she shot and what is your daughter's name? >> it's misty mcbride and she was shot in the arm and it broke her shoulder and she was shot in the abdomen and went in one side and out the other side. >> reporter: sir, how is she feeling? after hearing that, how is she feeling? >> i don't understand what you mean. >> reporter: is she okay? >> oh, she is fine. they gave her a bunch of medicine and i'm sure she is asleep by now. she is just waiting for surgery, to go into surgery but they had a lot of people worse off than her so they are waiting until they can get in and get a room opened up for her, i guess. >> reporter: can you tell me how it was that you heard about what had happened and what had happened to your family member? >> one of her partners called my wife and told her what was going on and that is when we came down here.

been with d.a.r.t.? >> five, six, seven years. >> reporter: has she ever been in a situation like this before? >> no. just your normal stuff. few fights and stuff, but nothing like this. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will have continuing coverage of the deadly dallas sniper shootings targeting police. demonstrations against this week's police shootings in louisiana and minnesota took place from coast-to-coast. the crowd outside of the governor's mansion in st. paul grew to more than 2,000. no violence was reported. officials in new york city say yesterday's demonstration was peaceful. protesters carrying signs and noise makers marched from a square in lower manhattan to mid-town. in oregon, a former portland mayoral candidate defused a paengs dangerous situation.

a gunman was arrested and no one was hurt. demonstrations were also held in many other cities, including atlanta, chicago, denver, newark, philadelphia, and seattle. graphic video following wednesday's shooting of a minnesota man has emotions running high. marlie hall that that part of the story and, of course, a warning for you. some viewers may find this video disturbing. >> reporter: people across the country are demanding justice, after police officers shot and killed two black men in as many days. the latest happened in falcon heights, minnesota, where a police officer shot philando castile. his girlfriend calmly live streamed the aftermath as his officer kept his gun drawn. on tuesday, police officers shot and killed 37-year-old alton sterling in a convenience store parking lot where he was

dvds. they responded to a report that a man had a gun. president obama says all americans should be troubled by the shootings. >> i just ask folks to step back and think, what if this happened to somebody in your family? >> reporter: the shootings sparked demonstrations in new york city, dallas, chicago, and philadelphia. >> enough is enough! >> reporter: and in minnesota, where hundreds gathered to remember castile to where he served lunch to 500 children every day. protesters made their way to the governor's mansion. the governor said justice will be served. >> would this have happened if the driver of the passenger were white? i don't think it would of. >> reporter: the u.s. justice department says it will monitor the situation. marlie hall, cbs news, st. paul, minnesota. a third straight night, people gathered in baton rouge, louisiana, to protest the police shooting of alton sterling

a convenience store. this morning, "the daily beast" is reporting that police allegedly confiscated the store's surveillance video without a warrant. a lawyer for the store's owner said the hard drive that recorded sterling's death was taken unlawfully. four previous use of force complaints were filed and dropped by the two white officers involved in sterling's killing. that is according to internal documents released yesterday. outraged city residents are confronting their political leaders over his death. don champion reports. >> your strength is showing through. >> reporter: louisiana's governor led a prayer service thursday night, two days after the death of 37-year-old alton sterling. collins is a baton rouge native, drove from new orleans to attend. >> everybody need to come together. we need to unify, no matter what color you are. >> reporter: just two miles a way, a mural now marks the spot where police officers killed sterling. his family is demanding justice and hoping for change in baton rouge. >>

at least five officers in dallas, texas, were killed when they were ambushed by at least two snipers. six other police officers and a civilian were injured. one suspect, who had been talking and firing at police through the night, reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. now the attack began thursday night at the end of a demonstration by hundreds of people protesting the fatal shootings of black men by police in louisiana and minnesota. a woman who was shot in the cross-fire last night in dallas is hospitalized this morning, but her sister says that despite her wound, the woman's thoughts are with the families of the police officers who were killed. >> she's not so much as worried about the gunshot that -- wound she has in her leg. she was more worried about, we are watching the news-the-hospital room and all she can do is say, lord, be with those families of those police officers. and that is what she kept repeating. as i feel for them police
