i'm anne-marie green. this morning, the worst may be over in east tennessee, but wildfires pushed by powerful winds are blamed for at least three deaths and destroying hundreds of homes and businesses. more than a dozen people were injured. the towns of gatlinburg and pigeon forge were hardest hit and thousands were literally forced to run for their lives. in the words of one survivor, it was like we were in hell. demarco morgan has our report and the frightening video. >> reporter: you are watching cell phone video taken by two brothers as they escape from a resort area in the mountains of gatlinburg, tennessee. they said they had no warning as the walls of flame surrounded them and their only choice was to ride through it or die. wind speeds suddenly doubled, turning into hurricane force winds that topped 87 miles per

drought-stricken area when with burning embers blew and brought down power lines. this community is at the edge of the great smoky mountains national park, the most visited national park in the country. bruce sullivan is the chief of the fire department. what is it like to be there? >> it's devastating. all of those people lost their homes and businesses and everything else. things they worked hard for. >> reporter: neighborhoods were left this family escaped with their pet and the clothes on their backs. >> it's possessions. as long as i've got my family, that's all that matters, really. >> reporter: unfortunately, dozens of families who will be returning to see homes like this one right here behind me, completely destroyed. firefighters may get some help fighting the flames.

expected. demarco morgan, cbs news, pigeon forge, tennessee. president-elect donald trump is expected to announce more cabinet nominees this morning. tomorrow, mr. trump heads to indiana to announce a deal concerning the carrier air-conditioning plant in indianapolis. last night, he tweeted big day on thursday for indiana and the great workers of that wonderful state. we will keep our companies and jobs in the u.s. thanks carrier. carrier says it's reached a 1,000 jobs in indiana. mr. trump said during the campaign that he would work to keep companies like carrier from moving jobs overseas. details of the agreement are unclear. last night, mr. trump met with for a second time with mitt romney, a former rival, on the short list for secretary of state. roxana saberi is in new york. >> reporter: good morning. mr. trump is continuing to pick people for his cabinet. he still is interviewing

team on board have been recovered. 71 people died when the jet slammed into the mountains outside medellin. were ir there were survivors. a survival flight attendant said the plane ran out of fuel. closing arguments are scheduled today in the trial of the former south carolina policeman charged in the shooting death of an unarmed black and killed water scott as he fled a traffic stop in april of last year. scott was shot five times in the back. yesterday, slagr testified in his own defense. >> i was on a fight on the ground. mr. scott was coming after me with a taser twice. in my mind -- my mind was like spaghetti. >> reporter: slagr faces 30 years to life if convicted of

attack at ohio state university, a somali went on social media saying he was sick of killings. 11 people were injured in the attack. the suspect abdul razak artan was killed by police. >> i thought he was angry because he had just wrecked his car which is do you know what i mean? normal. but when i saw him start to swing and i saw the knife, knew it was not just an accident. >> a self-described islamic state news agency called artan a soldier of the islamic state who carried out the operation. north dakota officials hope to shut down those oil pipeline protests with fines. yesterday, state officials said that they would fine anyone bringing supplies to the protesters. but emergency evacuation order to protect people from harsh weather was not enforced. demonstrators charged the

girls from villages where there were no schools. a guilty plea in the crash that injured comedian tracy morgan. the truckdriver who slammed into morgan's van is facing prison time. one of morgan's friends was killed and three other people were hurt in the 2014 crash. the tennesseean reports on the driver accused in the death of six schoolchildren. after the crash last week in chattanooga. police say they plan to seek additional charges. "the washington post" says a house vote is expected today on a bill that could speed up government approval of new drugs. 21st century cures would ease standards for drugmakers. consumer advocates say the complex 996-page bill is being rushed through and needs a closer look. the houston chronicle says texas a&m will hold a large

scheduled to speak on campus. the appearance by richard spencer next tuesday was booked by a private citizen. the university says his event can't be cancelled citing his free speech rights. tsomehick fog headed our way, possibly even some thunderstorms. and she has led house democrats for more than the 10 years. this morning though, that could all change. ohio lawmaker tim ryan is hoping to unseat nancy pelosi as the party gets ready to vote this morning. but first, more about the rain and fog moving in. here's meteorologist allyson rae. >> yeah, almost muggy for the last day of nove. showers today and even thunderstorm. and some of the thunderstorms could be on the strong side. this fog is very thick for a lot of areas. we have a dense fog advisory until 7:00 in the morning. look at the visibility around the region, a quarter mile or less. dulles, your visibility is less than a quarter mile. take it easy and give yourself extra time today. in the 50s right now. we are headed to 70 and we will talk about the threat for

olga, over to you. well, good morning, fog is the issue this morning. we see fog and slowing traffic in a few areas and droplets leading to wet pavement. no accidents or incident right now. beltway all in the green. however, steadier traffic on the southeast/southwest freeway. the traffic camera view, things are pretty dense as far as the fog is concerned. poor visibility along i-495 near route 97. back good morning. we have breaking news from overnight. police say one of the two inmates on the run for nearly a week has been captured. the two managed to run away from the jail with two other inmates after they sawed through the steel bars in the cell and then used bed sheets to rappel out of the second story window. one has been recaptured, however, a second remains on

could learn the fate of the white cop who shot and killed keith scott. scott's inkillarg spked days of unrest in south carolina. scott's family is expected to meet with the district attorney's fiofce today to learn the verdict. the officer shot him back in september after police say scott refused to drop a weapon. and we are following developments this morning out of maryland where overnight police responded to a barricade situation which led to an that happened and three people were injured including the suspect, a police officer and a woman believed to be a neighbor. the suspect is in custody. police say all three are expected to survive. that is a quick look at wednesday. the news at 4:30 starts right now. we are under a fog advisory

olga, over to you. well, i wanted to show you that view over there at the west side of the beltway. this is near arena drive, landover drive, you can see a lot of fog where the lights are off to the side. however, the maps show that traffic is light. everything in the green right now, we don't have a problem working in and around the beltway. however, we are starting to steadier traffic northbound lanes of 95, though no significant slowing at the time. and we are thankful people are take their time so far this morning. >> thank you. a democratic shake-up could be in the party's near future. today house democrats will vote on who is going to lead them going forward. california congresswoman nancy pelosi has been the democratic leader since 2002 but tim ryan says new energy is required to rebuild a broken party. and republicans have indicated they'll keep paul ryan for
