good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. if you are waking up in the northeast, brace yourself. it's going to feel a lot more like the north pole this morning. that bitter li cold air mass that has targeted the upper midwest arrived overnight and it reaches from the dakotas to new england. at least one death is blamed on the extreme cold. a woman died of hypothermia in st. paul, minnesota. like effect snow made for treacherous travel in michigan and more snow is on the way. near buffalo, new york, folks had to deal with whiteout conditions along the snow-covered roads. chief meteorologist eric fisher say the arctic blast is only continuing. >> reporter: c

be the story. so a lot of cold air to go around as we have windchill values 15 to 35 degrees below zero. this is what we are looking at this morning. the harshest air across the upper midwest and great lakes. by the time we move toward friday morning the coldest air will be across new england where the windchills will dip below 20 on below zero. soaking rainfall across california today. right on down into southern california, as well as quite a bit of mountain snow and that tapers down early on friday. looks like 2 to 4 inches of rain for much of central and northern california and 1 to 3 feet of snow across the sierra. there will be areas of flooding and strong winds. the same storm is a trouble-maker this weekend. moves to the other side of the rockies and a swath of snow into the midwest and into new england to kick off the weekend. this is also going to usher in the next blast of arctic air. another one is already lurk is as we head into the weekend and that slips down much of the west, the plains and the upper

average. meanwhile, we get a brief warm-up along the east coast and the southeast for saturday and sunday. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. so that winter-like west coast weather that eric fisher reported on is actually expected to last into tomorrow. another storm system, a winter storm paralyzed portland commuters. dozens of crashes were reported by late yesterday. 30-minute commutes turned into five-hour marathons. hundreds of students were stranded on buses because they were stuck in traffic. >> we are just the few students who couldn't get out. there were plenty of students who walked in this weather all the way to southeast portland. >> about 150 miles southeast of there, a moving truck in bend had to be towed from the snow. a measuring stick captured more than a foot of snow in that area and drivers can attest, many drivers had to dig out just to get home. we are going to

tech trouble for yahoo!. the company says it's not sure who is responsible for the largest known cybersecurity breach in history. the theft is not recent. it occurred in 2013 more than a year before another massive hack yahoo! announced more than three months ago. more than 1 billion yahoo! accounts were compromised in 2013 and the breach in 2014 affected more than 500 million users. the stolen information includes passwords and e-mail addresses and phone numbers and answers to security questions. >> it's a stepping stone into other sites, so even if that person doesn't keep their financial information or medical information online, by having the credentials and logging in, it's easy to spoof that person, it's easy to act as that person. >> yahoo! blamed the 2014 attack on an unnamed foreign government. so coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to a tech expert about the yahoo! attack and how you can try to protect yourself from being a hacking victim. and now to the

says targeted the u.s. presidential election. the office of the director of national intelligence says it will release more information about the russian attempt to influence the election once its review is complete. cbs news has learned vladimir putin was personally involved. hena daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president-elect donald trump will continue his thank you tour in pennsylvania today, amid new revelations about the russian cyberoperation that helped him win the 2016 election. foreign meddling the white house claims mr. trump may have known about. u.s. intelligence sources tell cbs news russia's meddling in the 2015 election could not have happened without vladimir putin's blessing saying, quote, the order to do it would have had to come from the highest level. the development comes days after the russia helped influence the claim to help donald trump

russia or china or somebody. >> reporter: russian hackers ultimately stole and leaked thousands of private e-mails and opposition research that proved detrimental to hillary clinton's campaign. white house spokesman josh earnest believes mr. trump may have been in on it. >> everything from the republican nominee, himself, calling on russia to hack his opponent. it might be an indication that he was, obviously, aware. >> reporter: republican senator lindsey graham who says his campaign e-mail was also hacked by russia is calling for more sanctions. >> we should tell the russians in no uncertain terms you interfered with our elections. we don't care why. we are going to hit you and hit you hard. >> reporter: the president-elect took a break from relations yesterday to talk about operations in silicon valley. >> i'm here to help you folks do well and you're doing well right now. >> reporter: mr. trump is still sorting out how he'll handle his own business empire as

president. a planned press conference on the issue scheduled for today has since been pushed back to january. and with four cabinet jobs left to fill, the president-elect plans to hold more transition meetings at trump tower this morning. >> very busy at trump towers. hena daniels, thank you so much. overseas this morning, it appears the cease-fire in aleppo, syria yesterday, has been revived. new video this morning shows buses lined up ready to begin evacuations from aleppo. the russian military says the last rebel troops and trapped civilians will be leaving this morning. families have been huddled with their belongings just waiting to escape. but there are reports that pro syrian troops opened fire on a convoy and ambulance as they prepared to leave. at least three were wounded in that attack. holly williams has more from istanbul. >> reporter: several thousands civilians, men, women, and children, are holed up in around two square miles of territory with aleppo

under the syrian regime's control. it's a major victory for the regime, after four years of fighting in the city. but it was won by indiscriminately killing civilians with help from syria's allies iran and russia. syria's president bashar al assad calls the rebels terrorists and in an interview with russian tv, he castigated the west for trying to influence them. >> the translation of their statement is for russia, please stop the advancement of the syrian army against the terrorists. >> reporter: the u.s. has condemned the regime and its friends in russia and iran but in five years of civil war, america has avoided fearing a dangerous escalation and perhaps conflict with russia. the price of that policy has

with their lives. the united nations human rights chief said on wednesday that the bombardment of civilians in aleppo by the syrian regime and its allies is almost certainly a violation of international law and he said it may be a war crime. holly williams, cbs news, istanbul. in the city of light. paris. the eiffel tower went dark last night with a show of slolidarit with the people of syria. back at home. the trial of dylann roof charged with killing nine people at a black church in charleston. yesterday, jurors heard polly shepard's 911 call for help. roof is charged with hate crimes from what prosecutors say was a racially motivated attack.

in two continents. two grand! she has got good taste. a pet fish gets a life line. the obama administration moves to protect planned parenthood. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the new funding to protect planned parenthood. a rule issued yesterday prevents state and local governments from denying federal money meant for clinics. it is a response to more than a dozen state governments that have tried to defund clinics. the corpus christi caller says the city's water may be tainted. residents are warned to use only bottled water. city officials say a backflow problem in an industrial zone may have injected an unknown chemical into the system. the gazette of colorado springs reports that a nearby school district will let teachers carry concealed guns in the classroom. the measure is voluntary and it requires training. the plan was proposed by

hanover district 28 board member who belongs to the national rifle association. self-driving cars. regulators told the company it does not get a state permit.t the action came yesterday just hours after uber dispatched autonomous cars in san francisco. uber says permits aren't needed because it still has someone behind the wheel. on the cbs "moneywatch" now. amazon makes a historic drone delivery and doritos drops out of the super bowl. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning. >> the federal reserve estimates it will raise interest rates three times next year. yesterday, the fed board of governor raised its benchmark rate by a quarter point and second interest rate hike since the 2008 financial crisis and likely mean small creases in credit card rates and mortgages and car loans. after the announcement, several major banks announced they were raising their prime lending rate. stocks had their worst day in two months. investors sold stocks that would likely be hurt by interest rates. thw

s&p fell 18, the nasdaq finished 27 points lower. amazon made its first drone delivery. a bag of popcorn and amazon fire tv stick were delivered to a customer in the uk. the flight from the white house took just 13 minutes. the customer had agreed to be a part of the test program. amazon's plan is to make drone deliveries in 30 minutes or less. starting today, super mario makes a run for the iphone. ♪ >> nintendo is introducing super mario run for rearview mirror devices. the app is freed to outload unless you want to access all levels and that will cost you $10 and in the future it will be available on android devices. you can forget about the popular dorito super bowl commercials at least for this year. frito-lay says it has no plans to advertise for the upcoming
