this is the first round of some very cold weather. >> the story continues to be the cold this december in stark contrast to last year. mild coast-to-coast but this is what we are waking up to out the door. windchill values well below zero. our high temps this afternoon, not particularly high. very chilly. even some record coldest high temps in parts of new england, staying in the 40s all the way down into north georgia in and around atlanta. we are also tracking this next winter storm. a big swath of winter storm warnings stretching out from the rockies into the great lakes. this is the same system has brought all of the heavy rain across california and now moves coast-to-coast. a swath of snow across the dakotas and into the northeast by saturday morning. you can see the snow totals. a pretty thick blanket here laid right on down the great lakes and into new england by the time we wake up on saturday morning. behind that storm? another blast of arctic air. by sunday morning, approaching 30 below zero in the dakotas,

on "60 minutes" sunday, scott pelley has more on the white helmets and he takes us on their dangerous rescues. things are tense just north of seattle, washington. an officer has been shot in the head and now the suspect is holding police at bay. he is holed up in a house and he is still shooting. the wounded officer was respondeding to a call that someone had been shot when the suspect opened fire. it's believed the gunman is holding at least one hostage. he is known to police but it's not known dui he started shooting. the wounded officer is in critical condition. next months, the same jury that found dylann roof guilty of federal hate crimes for the murder of nine people at a charleston church will decide if gets the death penalty. the jury convicted roof yesterday and as mark strassmann reports, it didn't take long for the panel to come to that decision. >> reporter: dylann roof's jury took two hours to find him guilty of gunning down nine bible studiers in a church because they were

>> thank you. breaking news. washington state, police say police officer was shot in a stand-off off with a suspect who was firing shots outside of a house. >> the cops have a primary suspect that was taken into custody just moments ago. a officer was responding to a call that another man was shot nearby. again, the police officer is in the hospital. he is said to be in stable condition. and he did suffer a gunshot wound. and breaking news out of silver spring, maryland right now. >> yeah, mikea turner with a look at how firefighters are responding in this single digits degree weather. >> reporter: good morning, mike and jan. it was a scary morning for a family of four here in the 16000 block of island court. there was a family in this home here. they aren't on the scene now but early this morning about 1:00 a.m., they woke up to smoke. when firefighters arrived, there was thick smoke spewing out of the roof and fire mixed
