disaster. good morning from the studio newsroom in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning isis reportedly claimed responsibility for the deadly new year's attack at an istanbul club. at least 39 people were killed and another 70 wounded early sunday morning. one of the wounded was an american but most are foreigners. >> good morning, anne-marie. that new year's eve nightclub was jam packed with people. now, nearly two-thirds of the people killed in the attack were foreigners who were in istanbul to ring in the new year. jake raak of pennsylvania was shot once. the bullet ricocheted off his cell phone and struck his leg. chris raak says his

barricades red carnations are laid out to remember the victims. terrorist groups have carried out devastating attacks in turkey over the past year including a double bombing at a soccer stadium just last month that killed 44 people. anne-marie? >> before we let you go, i'm wondering, do we know anything more about the person who carried out this attack? >> we don't know much more, anne-marie, particularly because he's on the loose and the manhunt is still ongoing. there's an investigation into which terror group he might be a part of that maybe had any hand in helping him carry out this attack and help him get away. the turkish media is reporting, remember, he went into the club in a santa claus outfit, but then he changed clothes which may have helped him slip away from authorities. >> rylee carlson. thank you so much. the turkish prime minister si

internet. coming up we'll talk to mark leibovich about trump's doubts and russian hacking and the new congress which gets sworn in tomorrow. north korean leader kim jong-un says testing has reached the final stage. in his annual new year's address, kim threatened to boost his capabilities. launching a ballistics missile would be a big step. the new year in chicago got off to a bloody start. two fatal shootings in a bar on new year's day continuing a trend that dramatically escalated last year. last year was one of the most violent in chicago history. 7,200 homicides, more than new york and l.a. combined. that's compared to 2,400 in 2015, the largest spike in 15

chicago's police superintendent say criminals have little fear from the criminal justice system. >> we have to send a message to these individuals to not pick up a gun in the city of chicago. if you do pick up a gun and you use it, you'll be held accountable and right now we don't do that. >> overall there were 1,100 more shootings last year in chicago than in 2015. federal aviation officials are investigating the collision of two small planes over texas. three people were killed. the planes collided over mckinney near a small airport about 30 miles north of dallas. witnesses say one planeit h the tail of the other. one plane came down on a storage facility, the other on a busy road and it's reported two of the victims were a father and son, tim and greg barber. well, coming up on the "morning news" now, stadium standoff. protesters dangle above thousands of biking fans. and

they say debris has been found along the shore. the star tribune reports the arrest of two after a banner was unveiled. a banner hung from the rafters of u.s. bank stadium and it urged the company to stop investing in the dakota access pipeline. the pair and the banner were removed after the game. "the new york times" looks back at the career of an actor who won fame for his role in "mash." william christopher died in california at the age of 84. he's best known for playing father mulcahy. the illness forced her to miss church on christmas for the first time since 1988. the 90-year-old is recuperat
