weekend in the white house, president trump reaching out to lawmakers on both sides of the aisle today, looking to get his administration on track. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie greene. well, at least 19 people were killed by a string of weekend tornadoes that tore through the southeast. hardest hit was southern georgia. search and rescue crews worked through the night. at least 15 people were killed there yesterday. the large storm system triggered dozens of tornadoes from louisiana to south carolina. four people were killed in mississippi on saturday. but it was a mobile home park in south georgia where seven people died that's been hardest hit. this cell phone video shows the aftermath of a tornado that slammed adele, georgia, early sunday. the twister leveled a mobile home park,

and leaving behind a field of debris. >> we were laying in bed and it felt like i was in a blender. it went through about 3:30. >> reporter: the damage extended across seven counties in southern georgia. the intense storm ripped roofs off buildings and tore down trees. the cleanup is also substantial in the city of warner robbins in houston county, where aluminum siding and tree branches littered the ground. >> i didn't hear nothing, i just seen it all come off the house. and i never did hear a tornado siren. >> reporter: in washington county, the storm flipped mobile homes, trapping a woman inside. her neighbor came to her rescue. >> there's a reason she's still here, so i hope she figures out what it is, because she shouldn't be. >> reporter: president trump spoke by phone with georgia's governor about federal disaster assistance. >> tornadoes were vicious and powerful and strong, and they suffered greatly.

so we'll be helping out the state of georgia. >> reporter: a tornado also touched down in louisiana at south georgia motor sports park, sky boxes were torn apart. and in alabama, hail fell during a thunderstorm. >> and on the west coast, torrential rains caused widespread flooding, mudslides and forced evacuations. several weather related deaths are reported in california. the national weather service issued flash flood warnings for large parts of the state. in southern california, firefighters rescued a family trapped in a pickup by fast-moving water last night. and firefighters also used a ladder to rescue a father and son from a flooded truck. further north in seal beach lifeguards went door-to-door after a foot and a half of standing water inundated a mobile home community and in northern california mudslides and cascading water washed out roads. >> it looks like a river. fe

live up the road, you know, for them to get out or not get out. >> meteorologists say this could be the worst storm to hit california in seven years. president donald trump is scheduled to hold his first official meeting with congressional leaders today. while mr. trump's press secretary sean spicer delivers his first formal briefing, after bashing the press over the weekend. craig boswell is in washington. good morning, craig. >> anne-marie, good morning. as most presidents do, president trump begins his first full week in office with an ambitious agenda. a schedule packed full of meetings, some of which could be overshadowed by the comments by trump's press secretary over the weekend. president donald trump capped his first weekend in office thanking law enforcement officers, including fbi director james comey, for their service, and swearing in senior white house staffers. >> we are going to do some great things over the next eight years.

>> reporter: the president's first days got off to a rough start. on saturday, hundreds of thousands of people took part in demonstrations for equality across the nation, in a tweet sunday president trump took aim at those who participated writing, watched protests yesterday but was under the impression that we just had an election. why didn't these people vote. celebs hurt cause badly. about an hour later he back-tracked saying in part, peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy. the tweets came just a day after white house press secretary sean spicer slammed the press for what he calls false reporting about the size of the crowd at the inauguration. >> this was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period. >> reporter: on sunday, white house senior adviser kellyanne conway came to spicer's defense. >> you're saying it's a falsehood and they're giving sean spicer, our press facts to that. >> look, alternative facts are not facts. they're falsehoods. >> reporter: the president enters the first full week of

key issues on his legislative agenda, but with only two cabinet members in place so far. >> so many of your cabinet appointees, mr. president, are quite different than what you campaigned on and even what your speech was about. >> reporter: despite the slow pace, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he's confident the entire cabinet will be confirmed. the senate is scheduled to vote on trump's choice for cia and secretary of state later today. the white house also says that mr. trump will meet with the british prime minister later this week. anne-marie, back to you. >> craig boswell in washington, thank you so much ahead on "cbs this morning" we'll talk with ari fleischer, press secretary to president george w. bush about mr. trump's attacks on the press and this weekend's performance of press secretary sean spicer. well, a second suspect has been arrested in the deadly holdup at a san antonio mall. he was taken into custody last night. on sunday afternoon two men robbed a jewelry store. a good samaritan who tried to

stop the suspects was shot and killed. one robber was shot and wounded by another bystander. three other bystanders were wounded. baseball is mourning one of its rising stars this morning. a kansas city royals pitcher yordano ventura was killed yesterday in a car crash in his native dominican republic. he was just 25 years old. in a statement, the royals said ventura was so young and so talented, full of youthful exuberance and always brought a smile to everyone he interacted with. also sunday, former major-leaguer andy marte died in a separate car accident in the dominican republic. a computer issue that grounded all domestic united airlines flights has been resolved. the united flights were grounded for more than two hours last night. united said the problem affected its ability to get information that allows flights to depart, like weight and balance information. more than 200 flights were affected. samsung electronics says batteries were the only problem

smartphones. samsung says batteries from two different manufacturers made the phones prone to catch fire. after testing more than 200,000 phones samsung concluded the batteries did not fit well and there was not enough insulation. the super bowl will match up a perennial contender against a team that has reached the nfl title game just once. the new england patriots will play in their ninth super bowl after routing visiting pittsburgh yesterday, 36-17. while in atlanta, the falcons scored a 44-21 win over green bay. the falcons lost in the 1999 super bowl but hope things will be a little different this time. >> this team that we've had this year has been the right mix. i mean we're a team that's gotten better as the year has gone on. offense, defense, special teams. and i feel like we're starting to play our best ball now. >> the final showdown will be february 5th in houston. coming up on the morning news, allegations of r

the trump adviser is communicating with a russian official in a new lawsuit against the president. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stands. "the wall street journal" says president trump's national security adviser was investigated for alleged connections with russia. intelligence agents say michael flynn phoned russia's u.s. ambassador in late december. the calls happened on the day president trump sanctioned russia for cyber attacks on the u.s. a white house spokeswoman denies knowledge of the investigation. "the new york times" reports on a lawsuit that will accuse president trump of violating the constitution. the suit says mr. trump's hotels and other business operations should stop accepting money from foreign governments. a team of constitutional and ethics lawyers plan to file the suit today. the president's son eric says profits from foreign customers will be donated to the treasury. the independent of britain says white house officials are starting to discuss moving the u.s. embassy i

aviv to jerusalem. palestinians have protested the plan, saying it would kill prospects for peace. president trump vowed while campaigning to move the embassy, despite warnings that it would violate international law. "the washington post" says democratic leaders hope to harness the enthusiasm from the women's marches. party officials were heartened by the massive crowds saturday in washington, and nationwide. they are looking at how to organize protesters to fight president trump and the republican-controlled congress. and the houston chronicle is updating the conditions of barbara and george h.w. bush. the former president is hospitalized for pneumonia. a family spokesman says his wife will continue her recovery from bronchitis in the same hospital, even though she had the option to leave yesterday. still to come, twitter transition trouble. hundreds of thousands of twitter users find themselves following the new president in a potus snafu.

followed@potus or those who didn't want to follow the new president. twitter says it's been fixed. on the cbs moneywatch now, president trump signs an executive order affecting millions of homeowners, and a beer recall. hena daniels is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. >> good morning. opec says it plans to cut oil production and raise prices is moving along faster than planned. russia and ten other non-opec countries agreed with opec in december to cut 1.8 million behrs a day from the global market. on wall street stocks look to rebound after a less than stellar week. the dow jones finished nearly 140 points lower. the s&p 500 lost five points for the week. but the nasdaq gained 34 points. one of president trump's first executive orders canceled a fee discount for a federal mortgage program that helps middle income home buyers. last week the fha announced it would cut its fees on mortgage insurance. if it had gone into effect, it

borrowing $200,000, about $500 a year in insurance. the s.e.c. s.e.c. is reportedly investigating two massive data breaches at yahoo! the focus of the investigation is whether yahoo! should have reported the hacks earlier. that's according to "the wall street journal." one data breach in 2013 affected up to a billion users, and wasn't reported until last year. another in 2014 affected half a billion users. also wasn't reported until twix. 2016. sierra nevada brewing company is recalling select beers in 36 states. the recall applies to eight different types of craft beers including pale ale and torpedo. a packaging block caused a piece of glass to break off. the split was the big box office hit this weekend starring james mcavoi as a plan with split personalities. split earned over $40 million in

when flames engulfed a barn in siberia there was no way the little pigs could stay in their sties. most of the 200 trapped pigs were rescued friday. 200. and the firefighters are getting thumbs up on social media worldwide. well, an urgent call is out for people willing to give blood. the american red cross says it's facing a critical shortage. >> reporter: laurie lawrence knows how critical it is to give blood. that's why she makes sure to donate every two months. >> one of my daughters had surgery, a number of surgical procedures when she was little, and she needed blood at that time. i know that it's just a necessary thing. >> reporter: the red cross is hoping more people get the message and give that life-saving gift right away. the nation is facing a severe blood shortage this winter. >> as you would expect, we have to cancel blood drives because of inclement weather. but this year we have canceled 300

have the original band headed our way, it fell apart. the morning commute is not looking as ominous. but that doesn't mean we're escaping for a very wet day, very heavy rain expected by the middle of the day. right now, showers in hagerstown. and farther south, this is what we have to deal with. this is going to be here about midday. take a look at the futurecast. in the meantime, cloudy sky, temperatures around 50 degrees into the 40s for the suburbs. by midday, between about 10:00 and 1:00, we will see heavier showers. areas that will see the heaviest will be west of 95. notice the orange colors. we are expecting at least an inch of rain for areas off to the west, about an inch for d.c. here's the snow or slush, areas west of 81. the higher elevations, you will get snow for if sure. some of the totals coming up later but it's not too much. farther south, we have showers lingering for your drive home. temperatures are going to stay into the 50s an

a lot of us. now melissa nord is out in sheehy storm tracker 9 and melissa, the roads are going to be wet but they're also going to be windy out. there >> reporter: it is, allyson. and even though for most of the morning commute we will get lucky because the heaviest rain ends upcoming in 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 this morning. but regardless, the winds are starting to pick up. and this will be a problem for those tries to drive to work and back home from work later today. right now we're on the outer loop of the beltway about to head towards georgetown pike. and as we continue around, it's mainly light rain. and this is what has been falling overnight. what you will see for the morning commute is that the winds are picking up. those who start to head into work, by 7:00, 8:00 this morning, it will be gusty with winds already at 30 to 35 miles per hour. and they'll only continue increasing as we go into the rest of the morning hours. closer to lunce

thank you so much. good morning. i'm larry miller. right now, it's an all-out machine hunt in fairfax county as police search for two suspects after a traffic stop resulted in gunfire after midnight. one of the passengers got away and ran away from authorities. the driver sped off and fired shots at the officer's cruiser.. investigators believe that the driver was possibly in a white car, an acura and maybe even a honda. if you know anything, you are asked to contact the sheriff's office. in maryland, this is what is left of a house after a fire ripped through overnight. the house is on 2600 block of haines road. we don't know if anyone was inside the house at the time of the fire. we are working to get that information for you. we will pass it along to you. right now, president george h.w . bush is getting stronger and could move from intensive
