grow the nation's manufacturing jobs. captioning funded by cbs good morning, from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. howling winds and heavy rain blasting states in the mid-atlantic through new england. millions of people in the northeast are waiting for the storm to ease today. forecasters say it's a classic nor'easter gusts are reaching 60 miles an hour. there's flooding and beach erosion along the new jersey coast. one fatality was reported in philadelphia. downed power lines, slowed trains and busy northeast corridor, utility crews are fixing outages on cape cod in massachusetts. up to six inches of snow is expected in northern new england and upstate new york. and the death toll is now 20 after a barrage of tornadoes and thunderstorms swept the southeast. georgia was hardest

accounting for 15 of the victims. a twister touched down sunday in albany in the southwest pat of the state. forecasters say it packed winds of up to 130 miles an hour. it turned a mobile home park into rubble. >> it literally look like god took half mobile home park and threw it across the street into the woods. >> four deaths were reported in mississippi and one in florida. the national weather service said 39 possible tornadoes were reported through the weekend. president trump has pledged federal help for georgia, florida and alabama. and at least four people are dead and several are missing after a fierce storm hit california. three days of record-breaking rain washed out roads and churned up waves. all but eight of the state's 58 counties are under a state of emergency emergency. mireya villarreal has the story. >> reporter: dramatic rescues played out all over california as the west coast was pelted with days of relentless

firefighters jumped in to save a family of four right before their truck was submerged by floodwaters. along san diego's coast, two women were swept away by a strong current. one was rescued by a witness. >> my daughter, my 2-year-old on my shoulder. >> reporter: violent waves pummeled california's shorelines flooding beach towns. the storm also tumbled trees and knocked out power. in the sierra mountains heavy snow. david ortiz tried to make the best of it. >> we hung out in the back and tried to stay warm. >> reporter: this is the worst storm to hit southern california in seven years, mireya villarreal, cbs news, los angeles. keeping manufacturing jobs in the u.s. will be on the agenda today when president trump meets with the heads of gm, ford and chrysler. and mr. trump said he had

also warned of serious consequences for shipping jobs overseas. >> if that happens we're going to be imposing a very major border tax on the product when if comes in which i think is fair. >> reporter: hoping to tackle other items on the agenda, the president met with both parties. among the topics discussed stalling confirmation meetings for his cabinet nominees. late yesterday, the senate voted to confirm a third member of trump's administration. kansas representative mike pompeo who will now lead the cia, but not before hours of debate. >> it has been impossible to walk away with consistent answers on the congressman's beliefs on how he would lead the central intelligence agency. >> reporter: former exxonmobil ceo rex tillerson moved one step closer to being the next secretary of state. a senate panel voted along party lines to approve his

a senate panel has proposed the vote on ryan zenky for secretary. no date has been set just yet. >> craig boswell in washington. thank you so much, craig. ahead on "cbs this morning," we will talk with senator john mccain about why he thinks president trump made a mistake by killing the transpacific trade deal. >> the trump administration said phone calls before the new adviser and russia's ambassador were routine, even though they took place before mr. trump took office. as jeff pegues reports. >> reporter: when president trump left cia headquarters saturday a couple steps behind him was his security adviser retired general michael flynn. cbs news has learned investigators have been looking into at least one phone call in late december between flynn and russia's

united states. the call came just as dozens of russian diplomats handed out sanctioned in the wave of the cyber attack. sergey lavrov suggested on russian television that the kremlin would retaliate by expelling american diplomats. but shortly thereafter, russian president vladimir putin sending out a note saying he would not kick u.s. diplomats out of the country, instead talked about restoring russian-u.s. relations based on the policies. president-elect trump responded great move on delay by v. putin. i always knew he was very smart. so far, sources say they have found no evidence of wrongdoing. white house press secretary sean

flynn and the russian ambassador covered four topics. >> one was the loss of life that occurred in the plane crash that took the military fire. two was christmas and holiday greetings. and three was to talk about a conference in syria and isis. and four was to set up -- to talk about, after the inauguration, setting up a call between president putin and president trump. >> spicer said the men talked again recently about arranging that calm between the two presidents but nothing has been scheduled yet. spicer also said that he had asked flynn if he had spoken to any other russian officials and flynn said no. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. president trump's new press secretary also said the administration's intention is to never lie to reporters. michelle doesn't take about the debunked claim. >>

the discoverpy of adorable puppies lifted the spirits of rescue workers in italy where a hotel was struck by an avalanche. the three sheepdogs were found in the boiler room of the hotel five days after the disaster. the search continues for more than a dozen still missing and at least 12 people were killed in the avalanche. a writer for "saturday night live" is suspended for a tweet and an update on president 41. those some of the headlines on the morning news stand. the houston chronicle said former president george h.w. bush has been released to a regular room. the 92-year-old still is hospitalized as he recovers from symptoms of pneumonia. doctors say he is doing really well. his wife first lady barbara bush was discharged yesterday after being treated for bronchitis.
