this is a yellow alert day. here is first alert weather. good morning special edition of wake up washington starting at 4:00 a.m. this morning. if you peek outside chances are you will see a snow flake or two. there is the evidence you can see the blue on the radar. we have a lot ahead for you this morning. thanks for waking up with us. >> meteorologist melissa is out right now in storm tracker 9 monitoring the road conditions we will get to her in a minute first let's check with alison. there is a dusting some folks will see as soon as they step outside. >> a dusting for a lot of areas some areas will see an inch if not a little bit more for some lucky areas. this will generally be a low impact event but there will be some roads

side streets, where is it snowing? here is the trend. starting to wind down already by 6:00 a.m. we will generally be done with this batch of snow. we will talk about later on this afternoon in just a bit. areas where they are going to see an inch, a dusting up to an inch are going to be south of 66, south of dc right now i want to pinpoint prince georges county, charles county and ann arun dell this is where we see the blue -- ann arun dell. this is where we see the blue color. 301 this is a big commuting line we are looking at snow showers moving on through there. the good news within the next couple hours a lot of it will be cleared up before the morning rush gets going. a lot of areas, north of dc, just going to see a trace or dust but chances are already starting to wind down. this is

bands of blue, a little bit more prince georges county and charles county. winding down west of 95 and some areas an inch or some take a look at your feature cast. notice as you head west we are generally done with the snow for now but a little bit more off to the west. it starts to get out of here by 6:00 a.m. 7:00 a.m. generally done. snow showers will continue through the maryland panhandle then by 1:30 p.m. another band of snow showers, light but pockets of heavier snow showers within those. another burst later on this afternoon. i want to monitor the roads, and melissa, you are headed over to where i just pinpointed 301 where some of those snow showers are heavier. >> that's right alison. right now we are just crossed over into maryland from dc on branch avenue,

i want to show you what it looks like out the dash cam. we've got snow that is falling but the snow is melting on the roads because they pretreated the roads, ground temperatures are warm enough. on the sides, it looks like a winter wonderland outside. we have already got more than a coating. big wet fat snowflakes this is not dry snow this is really wet snow with a high moisture content in it. and as it is falling it is not only coating the grass but elevated surfaces and stick on the trees because they are bigger wet snowflakes. what you are seeing in terms of driving impacts, main roadways absolutely fine. we just went over an overpass, you also saw a wet road. that is the name of the game for most areas on the main roads but if you get into some of those back roads it is possible some of this snow could be sticking on the roads briefly before it melts away. we are lucky temperatures past several days have

staying above freezing. with that, most of this melting for driving conditions but visibilities will be slightly reduced as you drive out this morning. keep that in mind that is the first half of the commute. alison we will be back in a few minutes we are trying to head down to charles county this morning and hoping to see a little bit more snow than we are seeing here in prince georges county this morning. let's send things back to mike. thanks melissa. if you notice an increase in patrols in and around several navy bases around our area. >> we are following breaking news overnight police in fairfax county are investigating a triple stabbing this happened just after 2:00 a.m. in front of subway restaurant off lee highway. all the victims are in the hospital. one in serious and another in critical condition. the scene is still active we will continue to update you through out the morning we have a crew on the way to the scene as soon as they get there and get set up we will have the

happened. >> canadian prime minister justin trudeau called the incident a terrorist attack on muslims and tweeted canadians grieve for those killed in a cowardly attack. my thoughts are with victimfamilies. just yesterday officials in the country announced they would take in refugees temporarily blocked from entering the u.s. as part of president trump's travel ban on immigrants. >> we have to keep working together, striving towards an open inclusive peaceful society that is the right response to this type of terrible event. >> reporter: back in the u.s. authorities are taking action. the nypd added extra officers to patrol mosques, city wide new york city mayor is also urging all new yorkers to remain vigilant he tweeted condolences to the people of canada writing our prayers are with the people of quebec city as they deal with a terrible attack on a mosque. we must stand

welcome back to wake up washington i am meteorologist, melissa nord. we are talking about snow. now it is not going to be a lot for many of us but those who are getting snow, this is what it is look like on your commute into work early this morning. we are in storm tracker 9, route 5, in clinton maryland and we've got reduced visibility but you will notice as the snow is hitting the ground, it is melting. so yes, you will have to reduce that speed but where we are seeing snow accumulating that is mainly consisting on the grassy elevated surfaces and trees. so let's talk about what has been happen withing the radar this morning first alert live doppler. most of that better accumulating snow stayed south of dc rather than our northern suburbs those are the spots that could end up with over an inch of snow. i just got a report from chancellorville they have just

snowfall total. now for the rest of today, this is what we are expecting. places south of dc, locally there could be spots over an inch of snow as much as an inch and a half maybe up to 2 inches if you are lucky main roadways will end up being okay the impact forgetting into work this morning main road fine. there could be an untreated bridge or overpass that does have slick spots or a little slushy accumulation on it. as we look toward the metro area, looks like we will get off the hook. those getting over an inch of snow just watch out. back to you in studio we will have an update coming up a little bit later. good morning, time saver traffic starting out around the region as she noted we certainly got mostly wet roadway conditions on the interstates south of town did see more snow cover to deal with as far as the capitol belt

>> the lady is like i'm 4 months pregnant. >> he looks comfortable. yellow alert day let's check with meteorologist, alison ray to talk about the snow. >> good morning. >> good morning we are finally looking at snow. we have winter advisory not because we are seeing a lot of snow but because it will come as we have people getting on the road for the morning commute. the roads seem to be doing okay this is a wet snow it seems to be melting on the main surfaces. those main roads seem to be doing okay. we have wet snowflakes around dc right now and this is going to carry on for 45 minutes to an hour and then we will be done with it for the morning hours. temperature at 33 degrees, so anything elevated, your car, anything on the grass or even bridges or overpasses watch that. we have better snow bands through mechanicsville

rick, la play at that. we are getting reports we had a report in stafford county up to 2 inches of snow. areas in white here south of dc south of 66, up to an inch but there will be some of those spots that see over an inch but not much more than 2 inches. areas west of dc you will get short changed just a dusting if that. this carries on until 6:00 a.m. then it is out of here it will be breezy, cold, not getting out of the 30s. 1:30 p.m. another round of snow showers this one is not going to be so much of an impact however it could bring a brief snow squall that is when the visibility drops pretty fast. just be cautious of that for the rest of evening. your drive home will be just fine. as far as impacts, i think it really gives a good explanation. north and west minimal impacts areas south you will see an inch. those seem to be doing just fine temperatures stay into the 30s watch for more

update, the roads doing just fine, well treated and melts. watch for the side streets, elevated surfaces are going to pick up accumulations. we do have a nice little snow band, and it is farther south we find the storm tracker 9 melissa where are you? how are the roads? >> reporter: good morning alison we have been driving south on route 5 earlier now on 301, heading from waldorf down to la plata the story of the morning for driving conditions here, even when it has been snowing, the main roadways, snow, big wet snowflakes by the way, when they are hitting the ground, they are melting upon impact. not only do we have warm road temperatures but road crews did a fantastic job yesterday and last night, we see numerous plows coming out here, salting the road. we are coming up on one shortly. the sides of the road, on the grass, trees you will
