. our region thrown into the deep freeze after a late season nor'easter gave us a chilling reminder that winter is not officially over yet folks. thank you for waking up with wake up washington. montgomery county public schools on a two hour delay morning chltd z we'll have additional delays and closings at bottom of your screen. >> had i is what winter is supposed to feel like, guys. you feel the bite. things are crunchy. that is what this morning is like. we'll have traffic momentarily and melissa, take it away. we'll get through this but it will be a few days before it gets warm. >> not only will it be cold but we have wind gusts over 45 miles an hour. >> oh, my goodness. >> a wind advisory in effect at 8:00 this morning.

look at the temperatures. we have teens show egg up for gaithersburg, fredrick, 216789 fresh snow pack insulates the cold and keeps it in place each night. it is a cold night this morning. it will be cold again tomorrow morning and the morning after that. some of the wind gusts from 20 to 35. look at this. 39 miles an hour and this is creating windchill temperatures, what it feels like when you walk out the door, that are in single digit territory area wide. . feeling like 4 in gaithersburg and 11 in d.c.. wind advisory starts at 8:00 this morning running through 6:00 this evening. wind gusts 45 to 50. keep the feels like temperatures running colder than the actual temperature today. let's talk about all of this and break it down what is going to happen today. we'll end up with a fair amount of cloud cover. mostly cloudy, there will be flurries, snow shs

and temperatures struggle. noon time today, 29. as we go into 4:00 p.m., look at this. we're barely above freezing in d.c. and places north of town, you're likely going stay below freezing. feels like temperatures this morning, a lot of schools on two hour delays but headed out to the bus stop at 8:00, 9:00 this morning, expect the feels like temperatures around 10 degrees. noon time, feels like 14 and we'll keep this feels like temperatures in the teens this afternoon. i'm tracking a warm up. we'll talk about when we can hit 60 again. isn't that a nice thought? . >> i love hearing that when i walk back past the traffic center. i realize i never changed my boots. can you see these? my outdoor, walk through ice and the snow and whatever is left over out there boots. sorry if you saw that in the earlier foreshot. we have a couple areas to talk about but it is nothing like what we saw yesterday. knowles avenue, construction, not an accide

or summit or connecticut this morning. if you're way down in charles county, we have a report from the sheriff down there that oliver store road and is it burnt stop road? i think it is shop road. i need to change that to an h. burnt shop road because i was thinking we should go down to the stores and shop. we should go shopping down there. >> and you can stop at the shop. >> maybe that is where i read that. >> there is a closure there. the intersection is closed down because of an accident. those are the only two areas. larry miller is headed out. actually went down to route 210. we thought there would be an accident down there. have you seen anything, larry? >> yeah, ellen, good question. we haven't seen much in the way of an accident down here. the roads are fairly good for the most part, not seeing snow or ice. here is a look from the dash cam. you can see what we're seeing and so you can see how clear the road

we're not seeing any snow or ice really on the shoulder or in the street. i just happen to see a few intermittent patches but nothing to slow you down. i think the concern is going to northbound the neighborhoods primarily. the church area roads, the alleyways, those could be dicey and then also people will need to watch out for bus stops as well, trying to make your way to the metro. trying to make your way to the metrobus stop. that would be problematic particularly for those who haven't seen much in the way of treatment. what we'll do coming up shortly is work our way into the neighborhoods and give you a better picture of what to expect as you head out the door. want to give you a profile this morning. still fairly light traffic out there. we expect things to be quite nice in the way of traffic for the most part, especially with the delays working with the local governments as well as schools and businesses. i think things are going to be a lot better

saw yesterday. certainly good news considering it was a little bit of a hot mess as we like to say in the newsroom. watch out for that again. we'll make our way into the neighborhoods and show you what you can expect. >> kind of a hot mess when i was driving on the side streets. be careful when you head out, folks. you can expect fewer disruptions as airlines work to get back on schedule. air travel satisfy rebounding from the storm. there is always that domino effect, though. reagan national was a ghost town last night. they reported 6,200 cancelled flights. that is a lot. there were 4,800 delays, flights from the storms mostly in big hubs in chicago. >> the ripple effect from new england. it will make an effect today. >> i was seeing the posts from people stuck in tropical paradises jooz 50 million people still reeling this morning from the nasty late

it clobbered us and really the northeast. >> you know, boston, some of those areas still didn't get enough of what they expected but it is still an impact. many of us were under weather advisories or warnings. some of the areas, pennsylvania one of them, more than two feet of snow. >> much of the northeast is digging out from the late season storm. it also brought blizzard conditions to north adams, massachusetts. the tractor trailer lost traction on a boston bridge. drivers struggled to make head way in albany, new york once they were able to dig out the cars. in delaware, ice took down power lines and sent a tree crashing into this home. >> it is like a car accident. you see the car coming at you and you can't do anything about it. >> people in southern new jersey dealt with doeszal flooding, rain and sleet -- coastal flooding, rain and sgleet is it like tiny icicles stabbing you in the fa

>> the brunt of the storm missed new york city. a little more than seven of snow fell here. just enough to delight the tourists. for los angeles the snow scene is romantic but it is more daunting. >> u.s. airlines cancelled 8,700 flights over the past two days leaving people stranded across the country. laguardia airport was closed for the day giving plows a chance to clear run ways before it reopened tuesday evening. but in the some areas like pennsylvania's pocono mountains, the snow is welcome. >> this is absolutely the best way that we can end the season. >> meteorologists say the snow won't go away soon. temperatures will stay ten to 20 degrees below average for the next several days. kenneth craig, cbs news, new york. >> this is definitely one storm that one montgomery couple will not forget. first time mom went

storm. in minutes, the firefighters got there, they delivered her baby inside the home. the new parents say they cannot believe this little person came into the world. >> i was, like, oh, my god, what in the world just happened? i was in complete shock. that i was looking down at a baby laying in our bed. >> there is going to be a snow storm and of course, our child is going to choose that day. part of me is not entirely surprised but what are the odds? >> what are the odds? look how great mom looks. it is a little baby girl. apparently she is a good sleeper and she is healthy. mom and dad are at holy cross hospital. they're expecting family to come visit today and she is beautiful. >> they is gorgeous. mom is looking good, too. >> they look great. very relaxed and comfortable. 4:08. we could learn later today how much the freezing temperatures could affect the cherry blossoms. 90% of th

gone for the year. >> they're famous, but fragile aisle thrown out by winter whip lash, under the threat of melting away before they bloom. >> we're devastated. >> that is sad sgld. >> we took the top questions to the national park service asking what is set to happen and what is the critical temperature. >> 27 degrees is the magic number. gets to 27. we can see damage on the blossoms, especially the one that's are further along in the bloom process. >> just a few degrees cooler, at 24, we could see brown blossoms like this and 90% of them gone. >> that is unprecedented. so, what exactly is this like. >> it would be more spoortic than what we're used to sfwl that is the worst outcome. the park service stresses some blossoms will survive. that means we'll have something to look at. >> even the worst case scenario there,

on the roads. tomorrow night just like we saw and what we're seeing this morning, yellow weather alert, refreezing north of town. i look short in the monitor. what is this. all right. wednesday everybody. we're going to have windchills that will be serious. you don't want to spend extended periods of time outside today because it will feel like it is in the teens, even in the late afternoon hour, this is the middle of march guys. we don't see this that often. it takes a big winter storm, a big blast of arctic air to get something like this to happen. 23 degrees right now. west winds 14 miles an hour, but look at your temps. 21 frederick, hagerstown 18. factoring in the winds it feels a lot colder than that. 2 is what it feels like in winchester. we've actually got a wind advisory. the winds keep picking up today. they'll be gusting 45 to 50 miles an hour into

afternoon. this brings a concern for how cold it is outside. think about the winds we had yesterday and how that led to power outages. it's still possible today with wind gusts 45 to 50 miles an hour and cherry blossoms blooming on trees we could still see some trees, sporadic power outages. 9 a.m., a lot of schools on two- hour delays. when you're heading today bus stop this morning, even at 9 a.m., sun's already been up. it's going to feel very cold like 6 in gaithersburg, frederick feeling like it's 9 degrees. we go to the afternoon and it's not getting much better. 18, that's what it's going to feel like this afternoon in d. c., and we will maybe see a couple of spots that feel like they're in barely the low 20s. it's march. we have a higher sun angle, and even with that higher sun angle we're going to have spots not getting above freezing today. we have not seen sub freezing high temperatures for a lot of

30 gaithersburg this afternoon. 30 in frederick, 29 hagerstown, martinsburg. winchester 27, and we'll be at 32. it's cold now, but spring starts on monday, and ellen, i've got spring-like temperatures coming in my forecast. you want to know when it's going to hit 60 we'll talk about that coming up in a bit. >> oh, good. all last weekend i kept saying spring is starting here soon, a few days away and everyone kept saying that doesn't mean it's going to be nice and warm. i thought that's how it works. not true. the rails are going to return to normal. braddock road to van dorn street or -- huntington, my goodness ellen, i'm still crazy from yesterday. metro bus is on a moderate snow plan. that's the exact same as yesterday. that means they're not going to be able to get to all of those neighborhood roads. they plan

throughout or downgrading throughout the morning to take it off that moderate and have their normal snow plan or no snow plan. metro access there are some delays. they just aren't promising that door to door service in case some of the sidewalks are still crowded or maybe your road they'll have to drop you off a little before there. how many miles did you put on sheehy stormtracker 9 yesterday? >> that is a good question. i'm curious about that. at least probably 200 miles yesterday. i mean we were all over the place partly because we were getting lost and also we were just trying to navigate the roads. right now we're out in fort washington. we are on allentown road right now. i want to give you a look at what you can expect once you head out the door this morning. for the areas that we've seen out in fort washington, that's going to be culture lane as well as washington overlook drive as well as allentown road not bad at

again, just some intermittent patches of ice here or there. i did have a sneaky suspicion there was ice and snow on the sidewalks and will is. that's going to impact you if you're going to be taking public transportation, trying to make your way to your car from the driveway or you're trying to get to a bus stop. that's going to be your trouble spot this morning. you want to be careful about that. the good news is that we're not seeing big swaths of patches of ice. they're fairly small for the most part. still even tricky nonetheless as we run over a few of them, we've had to be careful because it certainly caused some problems for us. we're going to continue to make our way toward the capital beltway, show you how things are shaping up on the inner and outer loop. thanks larry. 4:18. it is cold outside no doubt, and the winds are going to be a major issue. melissa nord is up next with how cold it's going to get. but you heard her, 60 is somewhere in the near future. >> when are we going to see >>ose temperatures.

>> okay. aftermath of the winter storm. we have a yellow weather alert today, not because we're expecting more snow accumulations but we've got really cold temperatures, windy conditions throughout the afternoon. the wind gusts going to be really strong and everything that melted yesterday afternoon with that sunshine that came to the clouds a little bit, it's refrozen overnight if the roads were not treated. slick spots out there this morning, brutal windchills, single-digit levels and we've got potential with wind gustings over 40 miles an hour. that's why we have a yellow weather alert today. in d. c. we're starting off at 23, feels like 11, and some spots north of town where you've got a really fresh snow pack on the ground and

winds, it's just above zero in hagerstown is what it feels like. storm system moved out of here. it's even no longer a big factor in the northeast except for the really strong winds that come behind us. we've got these snow showers that are starting to make their way into pittsburgh. we've got lake effect snow, showers and squalls that may try to make their way into our area today with the aid of those really blustery winds. wind advisory starts at 8:00 this morning throughout the day with gusty winds. it's going to feel like the teens. we may see feels like temperatures if laces like culpeper but for the most part it's code and windy. we've got a yellow weather alert today. wind gusts today over 40 miles an hour. there will be some snow showers this afternoon. we have refreezing with more slick spots developing tomorrow morning and also to go into friday morning. forecast highs today below freezing north of town, around freezing just above it in d. c. and just above it
