it's today it's, may 2, 2017. demonstrators hit the streets across the country for may day but the peaceful rallies took a violent turn on the west coast as protesters raged against president trump's policies. and calling the kremlin. mr. trump will have a high-profile conversation with russian president vladimir putin today as critics question his coziness with dangerous leaders. good morning from studio 57

headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin in the pacific northwest where may day demonstrations protesting president trump's immigration policies turned violent. in washington, the capital, in washington state rather, capital olympia police said what they described as members of a mob threw bottles and used slingshots to fire rocks at overseas. nine people were arrested and charged with felony riot. [ gunshot ] in portland, police used flash grenades to break up a protest they said had become a riot. more than two dozen people were arrested. several businesses suffered damage. tens of thousands protested across the country. this afternoon president trump is scheduled to speak by phone with russian president

u.s.-russia relations may be at an all time low. during the campaign mr. trump praised putin, one of several authoritarian leaders he had good things to say about comments that drawn sharp criticism. >> reporter: topics on the agenda of president trump's scheduled call with the russian leader will include the war in syria and missile testing in north korea. the president is also taking heat for saying in an interview yesterday he would be honored to meet north korean leader kim jong-un. trump is due to speak with vladimir putin later today. the civil war in syria and kim jong-un are strong topics. >> people tried to take his power away. he was able to do

central u.s. flood warnings are posted in parts of oklahoma, illinois, kansas and missouri. in missouri some areas got up to 12 inches of rain in the past few days. rivers and streams have dumped their banks and evacuations have been ordered. major roads and bridges are shut down including interstate 44. the governor declared a state of emergency and called in the national guard. >> in many parts of missouri this will be a flood of historic proportions. >> dozens of people had to be rescued and more rain is in the forecast. and there's no word on why a university of texas student calmly attacked other students with a hunting knife on the austin campus. one person was killed and three others were wounded. yesterday police say the suspect surrendered without a fight. >> reporter: a student is in custody in connection with a stabbing attack on the university of texas campus monday afternoon. >> we

victims. one is desesd. the other three are receiving treatment. >> reporter: a police officer confronted the 21-year-old within two minutes of the call for help. >> he was armed with a large police style hunting knife. officer confronted him. ordered the suspect to get on the ground which he did comply. >> reporter: moments later officers found three other victims all male students within a block. rachel was standing in a line at a food truck when the attack happened. >> looked just like a normal student. he was very calm, just walking around slowly. no angry facial expression. >> reporter: erin ran to a bathroom for safety. >> i was so scared. all i could think about was hiding and just doing whatever i could to stay out of sight until i knew it was okay to come out.

coming on. good morning, allyson. >> good morning, finally we are going to dry out a little bit. a few quiet dry days before more rain to end the week. looking at our setup, it doesn't look too dry. we have a couple of sprinkles out there, and it still feels on the muggy side. we do have one little shower near mount airy and a few hit or miss sprinkles this morning. it's still warm out there because the winds are still out of the southwest. it's on the muggy side. by the afternoon we'll stay into the 70s, but the air mass will change meaning it's not going to be as humid. the humidity will drop later on today. you'll feel the wind pick up. that will bring in drier air. you can see that here with temperatures into the 60s. that's about a 10-degree drop when you head to hagerstown. 63 degrees there, it's only into the 40s for oakland and through davis. we're not going to cool off that much. we are going to see that cool dry air

we'll take a big dip down to the mid-60s. we typically do see the temperatures fall this time of the morning. that's a significant drop within a few short hours. we will make our way back up to the mid-70s. those winds turn again. it's going to be breezy today, absolutely. sunshine is a pleasant day. we will talk about more rain headed your way, and we'll time that out coming up. all right, we have a closure, actually. southbound lanes of route 1. if you're down in virginia near quantico is where we're seeing this closure, before you get to quantico gateway drive. it is going to shut down probably through your morning rush hour. just your southbound lanes, northbound lanes should be fine, but you cannot get by. route 1 southbound lanes. two areas up on 95 in maryland, first southbound at the icc. we have an accident over on the shoulder just blocking the shoulder, and then also a little bit north of there before you hit route
