killed. what do you tell the kids now. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. described as unblemished and unflappable former fbi director robert mueller has been appointed special counsel to investigate the ties to russia. mueller will have sweeping power. his appointment caught both the white house and capitol hill off guard. president trump says he hopes the investigation concludes quickly. mueller was pointed fbi director by pretty bush in 2001. he took office before the 911 attacks serving for 12 years, preceding comey. good

>> deputy attorney general rod rosenstein will brief the full senate over the president's decision to fire james comey last week. it comes after he interviewed four candidates for the position. robert mueller now has sweeping powers to investigate efforts to influence the 2016 election and related matters, matters likely to include president trump's abrupt firing of fbi director james comey last week and recent claims the president tried to get comey to end the bureau's investigation into his former national security adviser michael flynn. >> i think it was a very solid choice. >> it's good we now have a focal point of somebody we all trust. >> under pressure deputy rod rosenstein made the decision wednesday saying in part the public's interest requires me to place the investigation under the authority of a person who

ercises a degree of independence from the northerlial chain of command. >> no politician in history has been treated worse or more unfairly. >> after speaking to graduating coast guard cadets, the president issued his own statement, maintaining the investigation will, quote, confirm there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. lawmakers in the house and senate have already been trying to figure that out. >> ultimately what we've always wanted is to get the facts. >> and yet another damning report out yesterday. flynn told the trump team he was working as a lobbyist for turkey. flynn was hired despite this notification. meanwhile president trump will hold a joint press conference with juan manuel santos at the white house today. it comes one day before his firs

trump bump turned into the trump dump. jill wagner joins us from the new york stock exchange with the biggest losers in eight months. >> good morning, anne-marie. investors are worried that the political crisis hitting the white house will derail president trump's economic plan for a major tax overhaul and deregulation. that slammed the brakes on the post-election song surge. wiping out $300 billion in shareholder wealth. wednesday's dive is a stark contrast. the surge the day after mr. trump was elected and a small bounce on inauguration day. still since the election the dow is up 12.4%, the s&p is up. the vix index road. this morning, anne-marie, asian markets are trading lower in the wake of the wall street selloff. >> the ripple effect. and we are learning more

about the classified intelligence the president gave to the russians last week. in of all plans by isis to bring down jetliners by hiding bombs in laptop computers. >> reporter: amid the bombed out ruins of moab university, they've come up with a new type of bomb that can pass through the airport undetected. it's long been believed that mosul university was the center of the military's bomb making equipment using equipment and labs. the research now includes a new generation of more powful explosives that can be consoled in a computer. when mosul was overrun they captured the airport and with it the monitin

oklahoma, found officer betty jo shelby not guilty per the shooting death of 40-year-old terence crutcher last september. shelby shot crutcher on a city street after his suv stalled. she told police she thought he was reaching for a gun when she fired the fatal shots. the father of four was unarm and no gun was found in the vehicle. crutcher was never a threat. he was walking away from her with his hands up. >> terrance was not an imminent talent. terrance did not charge at her. terrance was not the aggressive. betty shelby killed my brother. >> reporter: she took her own defense. she told "60 minutes" she sprayed she would not have to use legal force. >> i'm
